Can we dick on AWB in his own thread?
If Rice played as well as Scott this year we would be quoted 100m and he'd be proclained as the next Bryan Robson.
That raises a good question. If united were bidding on Mctominay who was playing for West Ham in the summer, how much do we reckon he costs? Goal scoring midfielders aren’t exactly common.

I reckon around 40-50 million.

Are you serious? I don't think there is anything outstanding about Matic footballing ability other than his defensive side. I do think Rice has good positional awarenss already at age 22 and could only get better with his all round game.
What? Matic has loads of facets to his game. He has extremely good technique and uses his body extremely well to shield and create space for himself. For someone who is pretty slow, he can drop the shoulder and go past people. Not to mention he also has a thunderbastard of shot in him every now and again. The only issue with Matic is if you get him isolated in space and even then he doesn't get caught out all that often.

I certainly wasn’t.

As for AWB, last night was another example of how limited he makes this side. Excellent at what he does but we’ll almost certainly need a new RB who is better on the ball at some point.
I’ve really tried to get behind AWB because he’s got a great attitude and he’s so good 1-on-1, but it’s becoming glaringly obvious that he’s a real issue for us.
It was an incredible sum of money for a player with such glaring weaknesses.
He isn't the greatest going forward but to be fair to him he has to play behind random players every week none of which are actual right wingers never mind good ones. I'd like to see him play behind a proper top level right winger before writing him off completely.

He's a combative midfielder that doesn't have any stand out attribute IMO. It's simply a case of our fans can't see past the Premier League and are happy if the club drops 70m on him in a difficult financial situation due to Covid. But I wouldn't have any issues if the club went big on Jack Grealish for example for obvious reasons.
Yep you can see something very special about Grealish

he has the character we need to.....like Bruno has brought

With his performance record in big games we would be talking 50 plus, then add in the phrase he has now added goals to his games and its at least 80m imo.
We tend to overrate transfer targets to be fair. Look at Henderson when playing at Sheff Utd. Chelsea, Bayern etc all linked with him due to fantastic perfromances. Signs a new contract with us and its ohhh im not sure..

Grass is always greener and all that, I can’t really dispute with what you have said. How good is it that we have so many home grown players playing so well?!

i didn't say Matic hasn't got any facets to his game. Nothing extrodinary but a very good DM in his prime and average to good for us currently.

How dare anyone think the more he plays the better he will get. Last season he had 0 goals this season he’s already got 2.

You clearly have an agenda against AWB
feck me @Red00012, I don’t think I’ve ever made a negative post previously about him. Not that I can recall as I love his attitude and his one on one ability.

If calling the technical side of his game out is agenda posting, well every single post on this forum is agenda based.

I’ve actually just had to check my previous posts and well, they are defending him, calling him a decent buy and well, I’m on page 2 and yet to find a negative one. “Agenda”, get a fecking grip of yourself man.
Oh wait, got a negative one, although it does say I think he’s a very very good defender.

Not sure why we are using Carrick as the yard stick anyway – just because he also played for West Ham?

As great as Carrick was, and he'd be a massive boost for this team, he's still the bottom level of our group of best midfielders in the PL era. I'm talking Robson, Keane, Scholes. That is the type of midfielder we are used to.

I dont get what all the fuzz is about with Rice. Hes a decent allround cm/dm but would probably cost an arm and a leg because hes young, british and overrated
He demonstrated exactly what I said last week when comparing him to Bissouma.

Bissouma is far far more disciplined in front of the back 4 if that's the type of player we're looking for. Rice has been instructed to run with it far and make forays into the opposing defence. He does lose the ball more but takes more risks.

What suits us better?

Well those guys are legends and one offs. We'd like to get used to them but we simply don't just unearth players of that quality year in year out. Same for any great team.

I think your post towards trent is clearly void of identifying his performances by all accounts. Trent is a liability defensively, Consistently with a capital c exposed. His attitude has been beyond questionable this season one of Liverpools worst players.

AWB is playing on the most neglected side of the wings at our club. Stick a right winger in front of him and he's no longer required to have so much emphasis on his perceived attacking ability. I'd prefer a fullback to be competent defending rather than all out attacking and this belief I'm sure is the wider spread in football its the reason we got AWB and why Dalot is in Italy.

Totally agree on the second bit. Imo Rice is multiple levels below Carrick.

Carrick should never be compared to Rice, I’d be furious if I were Carrick.

TBH, the way McTominay is progressing I don't see a need for us to get Rice. I'd rather spend that money somewhere else, especially around the CB area and an attacking winger/forward player.

I mean there's very few DMs that can do everything I just listed to be honest. I don't disagree he's not the level we need now, but your original point was comparing his footballing ability to Rice. Rice is way behind Matic in most aspects of midfield play.

Got dominated by a midfield of Matic and Fred.

People wanting us to spend 60m+ on this guy are bonkers IMO.

Not even Chelsea wanted him back with Lampard and Mount practically begging.

He’s similar to likes of Maguire/AWB, a decent, solid player but going to cost you up to twice as much as he’s actually worth.

McTominay isn`t a DM though and I`m a little baffled your post alludes to that. Its pretty clear he`s a box to box CM not a sitting DM so we`d still need a DM like Rice so that McTominay can have full license to roam

Ndidi doesn't particularly stand out for Leicester whenever we play them. Rice would look better playing in a team that try and hold onto possession.

But you'd prefer a deep-lying Carrick type player any day of the week.

Yes of course, but my point was that Rice isn't even a pimple on Michael Carrick's arse, never mind the real top midfielders we've had playing for us in the last 30 years.

We should be aiming for Carrick level at least.

I like Rice but I don't think he's a big upgrade on what we have. Wouldn't splash the cash on him personally.

Modern football is moving away fron DMs anyway. We dont need to have one

Not a fan but probably not a good game to assess him. All the West Ham players did a good job or blocking runs and shots and Rice didn't stand out really.

He's had some good games in the past doing a holding role that we would need when attacking. Maybe if we improved the defence and had a commanding keeper we wouldn't be so fixated on this DM thing.

He always impresses me when I see him play. Right place, right time kind of player when it comes to defending in midfield and he's not exactly bad on the ball either.

He was the anchor in midfield of arguably the most successful United team ever. Terrible under rated player because he was not a hard man or an assist maker.

Frenkie De Jong, Casemiro, Rodri, Kante, Partey, Fabinho, Benaccer, Verratti, Kimmich etc there`s so many DMs at top clubs that are still at the top of their game they are still very much necessary and if you think our defence doesn`t need a DM then well....................

What?

Don't agree there sorry. The best teams all play with defensive midfielders and the ones that don't can be 'got at' relatively consistently (like ourselves.)
Its more box to box with incredible pressure. I cant think of many DMs tbf, even Kante seems lost at the highest level these days.
The players that are lauded for sitting in front of the back 4 are dying out

Not a priority signing for me. He comes across as a very tidy player and probably excels in his defensive responsibilities first and foremost. I see his career going the same way as a Scottie Parker or Harry Winks, good at some stuff, excels at nothing.

Assuming we have a limited budget in the summer, even if Pogba is sold and potentially Matic goes on a free, spending £80m on Rice is borderline insanity. Those kind of players should be your match winners and make a difference in the high profile games, turn some of those semi's into a journey to the final.

Is he really twice the player that Liverpool paid £40m for Fabinho because I'm not seeing it.

I wasn't underrating Carrick, if that's what you mean.

Rice is not even Fletcher/Hargreaves/Ince level, never mind Carrick, but we've had even better midfielders than that. Rice should not be on our radar IMO.

Yeah I agree there is a shortage of these players around but I think that's just due to that shortage of player type rather than a conscious decision by clubs to play without them.

I mean we have to shoehorn in two 'DM's in Fred and Scott to avoid being overrun in midfield. I suppose it's the persons interpretation of the phrase 'defensive midfielder' - to me that's any player playing at the base of the midfield in front of the defenders. Defences still require that shield in front of them in some form or guise. It's why we struggle to field Pogba in a midfield two because we have no top 'DM' to partner him with, so we revert to Fred and Scott to avoid a battering.

I think if there were a handful of Makelele's available people would be shelling out big for them.

IMO we would benefit massively from a top level DM to partner Pogba with at the base of midfield in that midfield two. This would make up somewhat for Pogba's limits defensively whilst getting the most from Pogba's playmaking ability from deep, which is as good as almost anybody. Against 90% of teams this would work a treat and allow us to maintain attacks whilst allowing us to field our best two players in Pogba and Bruno.

Rice is a class player. The whole West Ham team looked absolutely knackered last night.

I'd question whether or not he's on Scott "Steve McGerrard" McTominay's level though.

Lots. He progresses the ball really well, he's got great range on his passing. He is positionally aware and is a great tackler. There is a reason West Ham have done so well this season and he's a huge part of that.
