It’s pure speculations if Rio would have won it or not. We’ve saw him lose duels and aerials as well. But it doesn’t really matter what Rio had done or not. Lindelof had a poor game, but this situation was a very clear foul. There is no chance it would have been a goal without the foul. A hand in the face is always a free kick even when it’s not in a duel. Here it’s used to win the duel. The only goal we conceded yesterday was a clear foul.
A quality CB clears that cross, regardless of that little contact that happened in a split second, and is made to look much worse in pictures that it actually was. Lindelof cost us the goal the moment he did not anticipate the danger and went for the ball but instead tried to hold out for a striker he can not manage. And I guarantee you that this will happen again, and it actually happened again after the goal with Diagne heading the ball across the goal.

But if we look at the whole defence yesterday it was very poor. And I’m not talking individually, but as a unit from midfield all the way back. There was a good analysis of this on tv: agaisnt a team that will play the way Weat Brom played, you always need to be one more man than them in the box. But we ended up with 2v2, and 3v3 time and time again, which meant every defender was defending alone. It was not just the goal. We saw many situations, as example when Shaw lost an aerial duel and DDG had to make a save. We dominated the match and then you could expect counters, but the situations I’m talking about happened when we had time to organise ourselves.
Agreed we failed to prevent that despite having to supposedly defending oriented CMs.

I agree that yesterday's incident should have been a foul.
However, people have been calling Lindelof weak for a while. Whilst yesterday should've gone his way, his lack of strength puts himself in a significant number of 50/50 decisions that he invariably loses, and every once in a while those decisions will go against us and cost us. It's purely a numbers game. It's very similar to when DDG gets clattered IMO - most are called in our favour, but if it happens 5 times in a game instead of once like other keepers, it's more likely that at least 1 won't be called our way.

He could absolutely have done better, no doubt, but he thought he was in control and tbh there is no chance Diagne would have won that ball without fouling. This is a clear VAR failure.

Obviously it goes without saying this guy is just not good enough. Everyone rightfully so talks about his frailties and decision making leading to goals.
But what annoys me is every time a ball is thumped forward and we have 3 or 4 players back against 1 striker why he feels the need to kick him every time giving a free kick away. Just hold him up and make him do something to keep possession. All lindelof does is nail him when there’s zero need to. Just terrible defending and understanding of the game. So infuriating to watch.

As I wrote in a post above, I think this was the problem all over defence. Our defender were defending on their own all the time. We saw this with several times with Maguire and Shaw as well and they all ended up in 50/50 situations. Totally unnecessary. Sometimes it was because of the defenders but I also think our DM didn’t do their job. As example, when AWB went forward, Lindelof needed to cover for him far out towards the line. In those situations there were at least 3 times which I can recall when Maguire and Shaw were alone in the box and really struggled with two attackers.

We also had situations where the CBs pushed forward all the way to the box and then the other CB was sometimes left alone with any potential counter.

If our player scored a goal like yesterday, and it was disallowed by var, most of us wouldn't have any complaints as we know what usually happens in 2020/21 with var.
I think this is the issue

When you see Maguire goal recently (vs Sheffield or fulham? Can't remember ?) That was disallowed and that was clean whereas this was ridiculous

We've seen goals against us which are blatant fouls in other games (or even given against us in the same game)
The lack of consistency is on par with the referees in the English game

Saying all that it shows to compete we need to sort out our back five and that means adding another cb and sorting out the goal keeper position

What is he good at?

Maguire and Bailly have flaws to their game, but they at least have areas where they seem to excel. Hell, even Smalling had some major downsides to his game, but he was fast, strong and very good in the air. I don't know what Lindelof does well. He's slow, he gets pushed aside with ease, he's not strong in the air, for a supposed ball-playing CB he's not particularly great in that area and tends to play the ball to Maguire to be the one who brings the ball out instead. He doesn't seem to have one thing he does well as a reason for getting picked every game.

Bailly is a madman who often does at least one thing per game which makes me exasperated, and I've been a stern critic of his awful aerial ability for a while, but he's preferable at RCB for me. I think I'd even take Matic back there right now. Bailly isn't the answer, and neither is Matic, and I don't even think Maguire is in the longrun, but I just can't see a single positive thing Lindelof contributes.

It should have been called a foul but Linedlof is always getting bullied in these situations. He doesn't try winning the ball, he's just hoping there is some contact so he can complain about being fouled.

He is one of weakest defenders I've seen play in this league let alone our club.

When fit Bailly should be starting for us, if not then put fecking Matic in CB or as a last resort Tuanzebe.

I'm sick of watching Lindelof play, he is a non defending defender.

And his elaboration is also incorrect. Unless you think he headers it off an invisible wall, his hand is CLEARLY in his face and not across his shoulder BEFORE headers it. If you're going to scramble to defend such a dreadful post, then at least do so with a slither of plausibility.

Here is it again for your ease. I look forward to you explaining away the laws of physics.

thats a well-timed screenshot, It happened for a dfraction of a second and he should definitely gets himself in a better fefensive position. He was in by far the best position and simply lost an easy challenge... like 100 times before, actually the number is way bigger. The amount of excuses for Lindelof is annoying. People are just brainless, challenges like this there is plenty, he was lucky we didnt concede from another header where he lost his player too in the first half and on another counter where he wasnt close neough to their striker who had a dangerous shot on goal. He´s an absolute liability form the first minute he played for us. He can have a good run of game swhere he doesn´t feck up anything but he´s very passive , same way ddg, however hes got no superpowers to compensate for it at least. Weakest defedner we ever had, mentally as well. If he plays again Ole should be sacked too, that´s pure ignorance, don´t remember when a palyer singlehandedly cost us so many points, the last few seasons.

Foul or not, he's a luxury defender who isn't suitable for the PL. Not big enough, not strong enough, not fast enough, and doesn't make up for this with any other attributes. Anyone who thought he was a better CB than Maguire is insane.

Not a foul    yeah ok.
Lindelof is weak as piss there but thats a blatent foul
I feel like it's one that a lot of ex-pros don't think its a foul because they like a bit of rough and tumble and all that stuff.... I mean imagine what Keano would have been saying if he was in the studio!

They are certainly right on the first bit though, Lindelof should be holding him off and being the aggressor.

I could understand if he was bullied by aggressive strikers the type like Costa and Mandzukic, not acceptable but understandable. The problem is he gets bullied by any type of striker, he is as soft as it gets.

Yes it was a foul but he had the advantage and the position he shouldn't had allowed the striker to get anywhere near that ball.

Time for us to move on from him, its a part of his game that won't improve and its too much of a liability.

And that’s part of his failings as a defender, he’s likes to try and grapple with forwards when actually he’s not strong enough to do it. Just go and head the fecking ball. Guarantee konate would clear that

“It’s not a foul, it’s desire”
Could it be more pathetic? A hand in the face is a foul, every time, all the time. I understand if people want to see physical football, but then it would be even more important that you’re not allowed to cheat like that.

Wonder if they defended Suarez as well? “The biting was not a foul, it was desire”.

This is a super lazy statement. If we focus on this PL season, could you point out the matches where he “singlehandedly cost us” points?

You mean like Maguire?

They're both proper clowns. Not one of them has had a consistent run of at least 5 games where he didn't make a mistake that led to a goal.

He's blind 2.0. Any pressure on him and he goes to pot. Maguire just isn't the right partner for him, he need a babysitter partner.
I prefer Blind over him. At the very least, Blind passing and play making from deep are top class.

Lindelof is not only weak at aerial challenge. He is also very weak 1 vs 1, he would retreat deeper and deeper every single time without attempting to commit to challenge the attacker. It usually end up the striker have shooting chance at our goal.

Vidic or even Bailey would have at least commit to challenge the striker or try to block the shot. Lindelof will just stood there and watch the shot.

Gallagher's cross was quite weird, it went up and came down as if it was lobbed.

from the slow motion, it seemed the players were moving towards were the ball would land, De Gea actually stepped up for a second then backed off...

Also from the replays , it seemed as if Lindelof and Diagne misjudged the trajectory, and Diagne was a step ahead and readjusted his motion before Lindelof did.

Just curious, do you actually think it is ok to push other players in the face or you make an exception in this case?

Average player. Nothing fancy about his defending. Weak and lacks command. We all know we need a CB to replace him.

this thread is hopeless, putting Maguire into the same sentence makes you wonder, if you open your eyes when you watch football. One is a proactive leader both defensively/offensively who takes the team forward and can make an occasional mistake. Second is absolute coward who doesn´t like to defend so he doesn´t make mistakes. Jeesus wept again this Maguire vs. Lindelof nonsense.

Anyone can make a video of compilations of mistakes. Ramos will look like an absolute clown too. How childish, grow up.

Lindelof didn't have a great game yesterday and will take part of the blame for their goal, but De Gea also has to come clear that. The West Brom player also has to get some credit for the goal. If that was one of our players winning that header we would be praising him for doing anything to win it. Mind you if it was one of our players winning that header it probably would have been called a foul...

Yeah David, at least David at his prime is an outstanding keeper, so there´s always a hope he could get back to his best while Lindi none once in his 100 games for us showed anything but so little to no improvement at all. I don´t understand how can anyone defend him. Fosu Mensah would be a better CB, if he got as many games. Neither him could stay fit...

But I guess it´s Maguire who cost 80mil that people can´t get over, like if they paid it from their own pocket! Let me remind you Lindelof cost us 35 million Euros as well, for about 85 mill is an absolute steal compared to that. But we can´t complain, every team buy dross from time to time. Just need to be more ruthless and obviously Ole doesn´t have many options with nearlyeveryone of other CB being out forever.

Harry Houdini has made countless mistake in the past 2 years and his fans have been making all sorts of excuses for him. It's either his defending partner, De Gea, his vacation incident, tiredness... You name it

And this is our captain btw

Our standards have gone so low that people cant even see how bad some players are

Ironically, I believe the perfect type of partner for Maguire is already in our squad. A 2011 Phil Jones. He looked an incredible player in his first few seasons. Such a shame what happened to his career.

Bailly and Tuanzebe aren’t credible backups. you can’t rely on either of them to be fit when needed. Lindelof is actually the squad defender that we should have.

Agree, but I don’t think Lindelof want to be a squad player when he probably can be regular on a top team in Italy or Spain.

Lindelof, Maguire, De Gea.... it doesn't matter. They all take it in turns to feck it up so no one permanently looks bad.

They probably have it all pre-agreed behind the scenes. "Yo Vic, it's your turn to screw up today so the press/fans isn't on my back this week. Go on son, it will be my turn next week!!!"

Hell, sometimes Wan-Bissaka joins the fun too.

Shaw is the boring goody two shoes at the moment who is not part of this cool club.
