I’d like to see this going forward

Pope
Walker
Stones
Maguire
Shaw
Rice
Mount
Sancho
Grealish
Sterling
Kane

But as it’s Southgate I expect the likes of Pickford and Dier making it in.

Maybe a bit too attacking (ie. need Rice in there)

--------------Kane
Grealish-- --Musiala ----Sancho
-----Foden-----Bellingham
Shaw----Maguire---Gomez---TAA
---------------Pope

^^
I think that team is about a year away though, but excited about the potential of Musiala (should he stick with England).

I know my username is 'Rashford' but i honestly cannot see a case for him starting on the left (or even as a CF) this season, i think Grealish/Sterling and even Saka should be ahead of him if this season is anything to go by, other than Kane, Grealish should be the first name on the teamsheet.

If the formation is 4-2-3-1 I'd go:

Pope/Henderson
TAA/James
Stones/Coady
Maguire/Mings
Shaw/ Chilwell
Henderson/Mount
Rice/Phillips
Sterling/Sancho
Grealish/Foden
Rashford/Maddison
Kane/DCL

And maybe Mount will be the attacking player left out, with JWP being more natural in a midfield two.

-------Kane
Rash---Grealish----Foden (purely over Sancho on form)
Rice---Mount
Shaw-----Maguire----Stones----Walker
‐----‐-----Pope

Sancho for Rash is a good shout too imo, but Marcus has shown to be clutch, even when not playing well. Coupled with his ridiculous pace and I feel he is invaluable, even more so for international tournaments.

There is zero reason why we can’t play this, they just all need to work hard. There’s 4 city players in there and it’s basically the formation they play.

Henderson for Pope maybe.

May aswell be entertained. This formation is good enough to get to the quarters anyway which is when we usually go out.

Jordan Henderson is a certain starter when fit, and rightly so.

Him and Rice at the base of midfield, with Kane and three others creating havoc in front of them.

Massive decisions ahead by Southgate concerning the squad as 23 can only go. Think it will be the hardest squad choice for an England manager as far as I can remember in terms of leaving players behind. No idea who he will pick from options below but massive decisions ahead.

Pickford/Pope/Henderson/Johnstone
Trippier/Walker/James/TAA
Stones/Coady
Maguire/Dier/Mings
Shaw/ Chilwell
Henderson/Mount/JWP
Rice/Phillips/Bellingham
Sterling/Sancho
Grealish/Foden
Rashford/Maddison/Saka
Kane/DCL/Watkins

Can't see Lingard or Bamford getting in, Barnes would have been in contention as has had a great season. Keane and Tarkowski have been left out of this squad so presume not in contention. Personally think we lack CB depth but other areas seem strong.

Very good team and will be really interesting to see Grealish and Foden playing together...they have so much ability and creativity.

I think this would be a good squad from the choices you’ve given. Mings out and another keeper in if you need another.

I think the players in bold are the only ones who are nailed on to be in the squad. The only name there that I think is very unlikely to make the squad is Maddison. The other CBs are fairly safe, but for a lot these players it will come down to form at the end of the season.

Absolutely no chance Southgate leaves Mount out. He’s a first choice player in his side whether we like it or not

Tuanzebe
Maguire
Shaw
Jones
Lingard
Greenwood
Rashford
Welbeck

This team will win the Euros 100% if Jones is fit. If not bring in Williams or someone else.

Almost in the team is Sancho as well.

I cannot see England doing anything with Henderson AND Rice at the base of a midfield. It doesn't have enough quality. I think that would let down the forwards massively when it comes to the quarters, semis and you're playing good sides who will be sniffing out England's weaknesses. I can see that type of team just getting soundly outplayed and outsmarted in terms of possession and it will be the same old story where we don't have enough about us.

England have to go for it and take some risks. The strengths are the forwards, I don't think we can emphasise our weaknesses in the central areas of midfield and defence with stodgy players as it could just end up with our attack getting little supply. The best chance is to play the best footballers and hope we can get the goals and have the energy to keep teams under pressure and maybe bring on the steadying influences later to see out games.

I'd probably go for something like:

Pope/Henderson

James/TAA depending on form
Maguire
Stones
Shaw/Chilwell depending on form

Rice
Mount
Grealish

Sterling
Kane
Sancho

No Rashford as I can't see him firing on all cylinders, and it's debatable he's in the best lineup anyway. I've gone for Sancho over Foden to have more goalscorers in the team but that could change.

My opinion hasn't changed much since I posted this however I am thinking Foden on the right instead of Sterling and Mount occupying the 3rd central midfield position

Don't think Foden is a real candidate for a CM position. Even Pep is on the record as saying he's not ready for that role. Re: your XI, I feel like Southgate will want at least one out and out winger - can't see both Foden and Grealish starting on the wings as both would prefer to cut inside and the centre would likely get congested.

That said, any XI that doesn't have Mount in it at this point is likely posted by someone in denial. He's probably the second name on the teamsheet after Kane right now - on the basis of this season it'd be hard to argue that's undeserved.

Grealish and Foden have to be certs for me, fitness permitting. We have rarely had those types of players available to us going into a tournament. I'd also have Mount in there because he offers that relentless press and work rate in the middle, as well as some of the quality on the ball the other two bring. I don't think Sterling should be a cert anymore. Both he and Sancho could oust Mount though. It's a form thing. Mount is in wonderful form at the minute, if Sterling or Sancho, or even Rashford, is in red hot form at the end of the season, then places in the starting eleven are definitely up for grabs.

Tricky decision could be how many strikers we take, or whether we should sacrifice a midfielder to get an extra striker in. At the moment I'm just taking Kane and DCL as we seem to have an abundance of attacking midfielders and wide forwards, which means no Danny Ings or Ollie Watkins.

I think thats about right with the CM the obvious massive weakness (Mount aside) and the likes of JWP and Phillips no better either. You can see why Bellingham has been fast tracked.

I think Rashford will play as there's not much genuine width and pace with that three.

Right now i’m thinking this

Pope
Walker Stones Maguire Shaw
Rice
Henderson Mount
Sterling Kane Grealish

We sure are stacked for options out wide & in attacking midfield. Reece James is pushing hard for a start at right back too.

Grealish is much better on the left than Rashford.
I like Grealish, and pleased he is finally in the England set up. Why he was excluded for so long to is a mystery. Rashford adds pace, and is a goal threat, personally I’d start him there ahead of Grealish.

it’s good to have differences of opinion.

This gets my vote. Walker and Shaw can take turns sitting back and bombing forward depending on where the space is.

It's crazy how far out of favor TAA has fallen, if he can improve his positioning defensively he walks back into the side I think. Trippier is a good backup for now, in 2 years it will be TAA and one out of James/AWB

Oh, and when Henderson comes back you can take one out of Foden/Grealish out and slot him alongside Rice, depending on the quality of opposition.

On paper I like this. Trippier can play LB as well, so think he makes the squad. Potentially leaving out James, TAA and AWB - so stacked at RB!

how many of those can play on the left as well as Rashford? Sancho is the one from that lot that I don’t think will start.

he may not start, but it’s certainly not a blanket statement.
Grealish has been one of the players of the season from the left. Sterling starts on the left for City doesn’t he? Its good to have to many options out there anyway.
