He was less than three weeks away from celebrating another Cam'ron Day with us all. Genuinely quite sad and seems to have been lost in all the discussion here.

I think you are taking my sentiments totally out of context. No one is asking you to pay your respects, and you’re free to do as you wish. I’m not saying making outmoded statements is okay, but it is understandable coming from people of a certain age – you’re ultimately a product of your era. It’s obviously important to call that out and try to educate people to update their perspectives and attitudes.
Ill miss ol Phil and his craziness that he some how always got away with. Some of his classics:
I'm not buying that these kind of comments were acceptable because he was of a certain age, he just had horrible views. Clearly he didn't update his perspective or attitude either, there's decades between those comments.

Not better, I just have waaaay more time on my hands :D
That was well played, but it also makes a good point in my mind. A lot of the “common courtesy” brigade care more about tepid jokes over a dead royal than they do the racism faced by Meghan. Meghan being asked about the colour of her child isn’t a problem, but some Phillip joke is “disgusting”

That's a lot of words to say "yes but it doesn't bother me".
You see, one of the problems now is that so many people want simple yes/no answers; without understanding the context.

And in point of fact, I actually said NO, not YES....

It's not that people can't handle life being complicated it's people wanting to have fun on the internet. It's very funny that a 21st century racist monarch who spent the last 40 odd years looking like a skeleton from jason and the argonauts died. Yet for some bizarre reason a bunch of posters who ironically enough complain about cancel culture are now suddenly pissing their pants and are trying to make the discussion as boring as possible.

Tbh if Philip didn't want people to laugh at his death then he should of made some hip hop bangers in the early 2000's.
 Oh come on. You know damn well that half the fun is people taking offence at the jokes and memes. Stop pretending it’s ruining your enjoyment of a very old man popping his clogs.

I totally agree with you in general. What I will say in Cantona's defense is that his comment was a couple of years ago when we were all just speculating on why she and Harry had moved. I don't think there was anything said by her about it at the time.

I'm just going to casually observe this thread from now on because if I don't I'll just be moaning about the BBC for ages.

You don’t get it, Penna. He’s a bad guy. That’s the way it works these days. Especially on social media. You’re either a good guy or a bad guy. When the good guys die we act all sad and say “RIP”. When the bad guys die we crack funny jokes about them being dead. Stop complicating things. Nobody can handle life being complicated.
At least personally, I don’t think he was a bad or a good guy. I think the public at large are very quick to venerate public figures. The problem for me is when the biggest newspaper in the country can yesterday release an article titled "Phillip's 17 funniest comments" and number 3 is him asking an Aboriginal businessman if they still throw spears at each other. Yet some in this thread are busy crying because of a few jokes at his expense. I just find their hand wringing, moral lamenting such bullshit. Edit (That last sentence isn't aimed at you, or even other people who have chimed in with a "I find the jokes distasteful etc, I think that's fine, more the ones who have come in with "I can't BELIEVE how LOW some people will stoop etc")

Ah that's fair enough, I was extrapolating my experiences onto him I guess, as many of the people I know who have been lambasting Meghan for the last month for being a drama queen, attention seeker, bullshitter etc are now crying into their cornflakes if someone mentions big Phil in a less than positive light.

Yeah I read that, I think my issue is that I like the Royal Family (or at least I'm not offended by them), something very few on here do, so I get my bristles up and swim against the tide whenever any Royal thread comes up. Not really worth it tbh, espcially with razor sharp posters waiting to make you look a mug.

I think I should be more understanding that the institution is something that’s important to a lot of people, and if not temper what I say, at least accept that other people will have differing opinions and I don’t need to log heads about it. I take a fairly irreverent tone to many things, and I need to understand that will upset/annoy people.

I struggle with the amount of focus dedicated to a man. A man with an extreme amount of privilege, And a few jokes at his expense is my way of pushing back against the constant worship I see in the media. It’s tragic for the queen and his family, and my heart goes out to them. But I think the idea of royals is counterproductive and archaic.

Plus if anyone should be a prince it should be me.

The thing I find odd is that the people who seem to have a blast naming him a racist and enjoy his death feel the need to add stuff like this, as if they have the need to assure everyone they're decent human beings who just happen to enjoy his death.

Seems quite fake, and it's not even true. Living a life of good health, wealth and privilige before dying at the age of 99 isn't a tragedy at all. There isn't really anything to lament.

You like what you like. You don't need to apologise to anyone here for that.

Of course it's true, they were married for 73 years. It's going to be utterly heartbreaking for her, just as it was for my grandmother when my grandfather died after 50 years together. It's not a pain I'd wish on anyone, and just because I don't give a shit that he's passed away doesn't mean I don't feel bad for the pain his family is going through.

If your father died at an old age, would you tell your mother not to grieve because he lived to an old age and that there's nothing sad about it? Of course you wouldn't

So was he a racist or not? What's the consensus?
Questionable views perhaps but there’s far worse lurking in the Conservative and Labour parties and in general around the world. As politicians are directly involved in policy making and as such a number over the years have been racist, I’d say he wasn’t but it’s going to depend on your definition of racist.

Nothing wrong with what you say here, except that those notions don't go together with jokes that are clearly ill spirited (not sure if you made them, just generally speaking).

You wouldn't celebrate your dad dying while telling your mother your heart goes out to her. I don't mind people joking about his death, it's perfectly fine to loathe the monarchy as far as I'm concerned, but you can't really have it both ways.

He also has lyrics such as these:

"And if you got a daughter older than 15, I'm [going to] rape her," DMX intones. "Take her, on the living room floor, right there in front of you/ D*ck action seriously, what you wanna do?/ Frustrating isn't it? Wanna kill me, but I'm [going to] kill you/ Now watch me f*ck just a lil' while longer please, will you?"
Those lyrics are horrific, I had no idea Prince Philip had even released anything.

This thread would be much shorter if people operated on the basis of: “If you have nothing nice to say, then don’t open your mouth.”

Honestly, the Caf has become such a fecking miserable and toxic place.
Ironically, this thread would be a lot shorter if prince Philip took that same advice.

The Queen has never said boo to a goose but I’m sure we will get the same bollocks when her time comes. We get it, the Caf doesn’t like the Royals!
Philips getting this treatment because he was a bigoted cnut, not because he's a royal.

DMX was a cnut too.
How come?

I know little of his backstory, so genuine question.

I understand he was a drug addict, but that alone doesn’t make him a cnut.
Due to my wife’s work, she’s interacted with the guy several times. When I told her he’d died, she said “well, his mom was always nice, and I imagine she’s hurting, so I feel sorry for her...”

She did not like DMX. Said he acted like he was holier than thou, better than everyone around, etc.

Everyone keeps going on how down to Earth he was. Apparently, he went out and helped a guy mop the floor in a fast food restaurant.

It's a shame he didn't make good music because then we could've ignored all his character flaws and celebrate his life.

I wonder if he'd have helped him every day? And without the presence of the media.

I’m just telling you what I was told by my wife. Dude was an asshole to them... repeatedly.
I'm not doubting you mate. Just seen tweets that allude to him being a nice bloke etc.
