In the settlments there are security officers in each village, they are not soldiets but they are paid by the government for defense duties such as night tours and first respondents to security threats. Swedes pay between 25 and 35% taxes, getting in return enormous amount of privileges and services back from that. The average american tax payer pays ~24% taxes and what they get for their money? peanuts, maybe you pay your country with your own tax money to invade other countries and start wars?
And if I recall correctly Americans have higher taxes in other forms than personal income, such as property taxes. All things considered Americans actually don't pay as little as they think they do.
I could be completely wrong about it by the way, I just recall this from a Reddit thread.
