Essentially you don't care what Rashford felt and wanted to do? And you don't think he should have been able to make the decision?

I'm not sure how you expected the club to deal with this. Tell him he can't go and must consent to an operation? One that we've been happy for him to delay in order to help us over the line in the PL. Then have a bust up with him for preventing him doing something he's always dreamed of doing for his country?

Rashford has gone above and beyond for us and wanted to go to the Euros. Fair play. We back him and it is what it is.
I expect a grown man to behave and make decision like a grown man.

I expected him to be rational.
This isn't a new injury, or something that just came about. It's something that has hampered his game performance for over a year.
It's affecting your work performance - deal with it.

I also expected Southgate to be rational, "look Marcus, i prefer Sterling, Kane, Mount, Saka, Grealish and Sancho over you."

He did it to Greenwood didn't he?

Once you factor in all that, his decision to stay and "play" for England in the Euros is basicly down to, what you said - "being a part of a once in a lifetime experience".

And that's called not being rational.

Which is totally fine - he's a young lad.
Although he's showed that he is very considerate to the problems he's faced and is working hard to rectify them for others.

I'm not slating him by all means, and i do think very highly of him, that's probably why i think this could have been handeled better for all parties involved.

I have read the article and the statement he gave a couple of weeks ago. So if we take everything at face value he couldn’t be arsed seeing the surgeon before this to decide if they were going to go the surgery route or book it in.
I mean a club the size of Manchester Utd can’t get a surgeon for 3 weeks. Come on really. Let’s put things in perspective. The players wages for those 3 weeks are £750k

He needs to have the surgery and it’s good he is. He has been playing through injury for club and country for way to long and his performances have prob suffered. It’s just I can’t believe that after suffering with the injury for most of the season things were organised better than this. Hardly professional. Can you imagine if Pogba did the same thing.
its laughable that people think its okay for Rashford to wait 3 weeks before surgery. This is an elite player playing for a rich elite team.Unless its a specialist surgery that can only be done by one surgeon who clearly knows his worth and cannot be persuaded by any amount money.

I can only assume Rashford didnt want anything booked in advance just in case England win the Euros and theres further activities planned that he didnt want to risk missing. Things like a parade, visiting the queen etc.

We can all assume things without knowing any true reason. Could also be that the surgeon had a vacation booked, as most people around this time do? Even if he would be persuaded to do the surgery ahead of his vacation, would Rashford not perhaps need follow-ups and check-ins in the weeks following the surgery? Then the surgeon would need to cancel his entire vacation just to treat Rashford and to be stand-by if something needs to be looked at.

I’m not sure what the routines are but it’s a bit dangerous to make assumptions. Rashford is a professional. Our staff are professionals. I’m sure it’s handled correctly (or at least so I hope).

It's laughable that you're acting as you have any insight into the situation. We simply don't know why he has to wait three weeks for the surgery, all we know is that he does.

I think Rashford behaves very much like a 'grown man' and given what he's achieved both in and outside of football he's more mature than his years suggest.

None of us know what was said by Rashford, the club or England but a decision has been made together and everyone was satisfied with it. Not sure why you have issue to be honest.

It could have quite easily been decided he'd go and be used sparingly as a compromise. No one knows when he would have had the operation anyway.

People just making an issue.

Yeah we should have forced him to have surgery against his wishes.

That's how you build morale in the squad. Nice one Jose.

I agree, none of us know whose decision it was.

That's why it's an issue. Its a football forum, we can't be having discussions based on evidence now could we. :)

Wait till our crappy start to the season, then you'll see people making issues.

Essentially the options were he missed the end of our season and run in, missed the Euros or played both and had the op now.

Quite easy to see why everyone agreed on the latter no?

The Caf is bipolar on Rashford anyway so I'm surprised people are bothered. Then again another stick to beat *him/the club/England I guess.

Sancho on the left for the first couple of months then, unless Ole is prepared to give Martial another chance? If not then Greenwood will keep his spot on the right and Amad will get some game time which is good.

If it was 6 months out, I would be just as delighted. The boy needs to do this for his career, he cannot carry on the way he has been of late. My only fear is he may rush his return, hopefully we manage that now that Sancho is wrapped up, Martial will be back and some back up youth players to cover. Good lucky to Rashy.

Where did the option no.3 go?

Aka - missing the Euro.

Especially given the fact he barely played.
If Southgate was honest enough, he would have told him "you're not in my plans".

Maybe the decision to miss the Euro would have been easier.

I have no problem with him having the op now and think he was right to go to the Euros. But he’s not is he. He’s having it in 3 weeks.

There's three options there if you read what I wrote.

You would sooner he played through the injury for United, miss the Euros, then start the new season for United. I get it.

Totally unrealistic view to have mind under the circumstances and if United tried to force that on him it would have been terrible management.

The moment the club were happy to delay the surgery they were accepting the player may choose to go to the Euros. You can't have it both ways.

Except you're missing a point.

He's United's first 11 pick.

He's England's 7th pick.

Surely the real issue here is why he was playing in the Euros. He knew he wasnt fit, Southgate must have known, United must have known, so why was he picked by Southgate and released by Ole? What if he had further damaged his shoulder? Remember Bryan Robson in the 86 World Cup? He had dislocated his shoulder the previous year, vs Coventry I believe. Bobby Robson picked him knowing it was a gamble and in the game v Morocco Robbo injured the shoulder again and couldnt play the rest of the tournament and missed much of the start of the 86/87 season. I dont know how bad Rashfords injury is, but it requires surgery to fix it; he should not have been in the England squad.

He shouldn't have played the latter end of our season at United either but he did and everyone was okay with that.

I personally think it’s a joke that he’s not having it for 3 weeks. Totally disrespectful to the club. No way he couldn’t have had it line up for the start of this week. So either he wasn’t arsed to get it sorted or he has just decided to take 3 weeks hols on top of his 6 weeks with England. Surely he could of had a holiday while recovering.
Erm..Read the article properly, the surgeon isn't available for a few weeks.

It's not a point though and is totally irrelevant. This is hard work.
How is it irrelevant?

I believe he would have reconsidered his decision to "play" in the Euros if he knew he'd only get 80 minutes or so in 7 matches and be degraded to a 2 minute sub ins.

And instead opt for the early operation and recovery in order to play for United.

At least i'd hope he would.

You're putting way to much emphasis on the whole "being part of something great for England".

You're injured. And your coach for the next 4 weeks prefers 6 players before you.

It's not a hard call actually.

Sorry you're just repeating yourself and not acknowledging anything I've said.

Your basing your whole argument on him not playing much for England which is silly.

He played through the injury for United and helped us close the season and wanted to do the same with England. That's all there is to it. The club can't have it all it's own way (nor would i want it to as that's not how you manage players/staff to bring the best out of them)

He'll probably miss 7 Premier League matches, 2 Champions League matches and 1 League Cup match:

14 Aug - Leeds (H)
22 Aug - Southampton (A)
29 Aug - Wolves (A)
Useless international break
11 Sep - Newcastle (H)
14/15 Sep - CL Matchday 1
19 Sep - West Ham (A)
*possible league cup match which he wouldn't play in anyway
25 Sep - Villa (H)
28/29 Sep - CL Matchday 2
2 Oct - Everton - (H)
Useless international break

After the Everton game, there's a 14 day break for internationals. I assume Rashford will be aiming to be back in contention by the time that's over.

There are no top 6 teams during that run, so it could have been worse.

I pay your wages, you play for me.
I pick you as my star man.
Southgate picks 6 players before you.

It's called priorities.

At least my argument is the truth.
He played 84 minutes in 7 games.

There is absolutely no way any footballer is going to pass up a chance to represent their country at a major tournament.

To suggest otherwise isn't rational at all. It's nonsense.

I'm not though and this is why I've just said you need to actually read what you're responding back to before you comment.

Your argument is your own, dare I say it, narrow minded opinion.

If you care to look at the bigger picture and the feelings of the player you might start to see the alternate view points more clearly.

You sure he won't be aiming to be back for the International games?

He sure looooves "playing" for England.
One should know his priorities.

Not bad at all. Sancho, Martial, Greenwood, James and probably Pogba if he stays can easily rotate between the 2 wings and support Cavani up top. And then we'll have quality depth so Rashford doesn't need to be overplayed in case of future injuries like the past 2.

The England guys were never going to be ready for the start anyway. We have a squad and they'll come in bit by bit and we have the depth to cover anyway.
