From a pure football point of view, I think that Messi leaving is a blessing in disguise. No team can afford to have a superstar player in their side these days. The best teams really need 11 players working for each other. Especially when the team is as mediocre as Barca is.

But La Liga has gone to shit. Of course you can point to PSG, but I'd like to know the odds for all English teams in all the Euro finals next year.
Sure, long term it will help them although I'm not sure how long he could remain playing for them, 2 or 3 years? One way or another this was inevitable and at least last year they could sold him. Still this forces them to start the rebuild the club post-Messi, it is in pretty bad shape in terms of finances and their squad while having plenty of talent it's still very unbalanced.

By losing Messi one would hope someone like Griezmann should step up his game, he no longer will have the excuse of being played out of position (although he still overlaps with other players) and now they're obligued to play more like a team instead of depending on Messi to carry the whole attack.

I don't think Barca will completely crumble. They still have a good squad and are good enough to make top 4, but it could be a while before they're a force in europe again.

They really need to find a better manager though, someone like klopp who could maka a difference. Right now Koeman feels like a dead man walking without even a game played this season.
who the deck is going to want to go to Barca right now. Shit managers like Koeman who aspire to go from mid table clubs to the big teams are the only ones they can aim for. Wouldn’t be surprised if even he walks out a few months into the season when it’s all been a disaster.

No team in particular.
Damn, Glazers look great now, aren't they?
They look fine...until people notice that United hasn't competed seriously for the UCL and PL for a decade.

Yeah, i get why people are mad at them

It's a different situation but yes United should be doing better.

However, had investors gone to Spain instead of England Barca could have ended up in much worse shape. Barca's only competition is Real and Atlético, they can be abysmal and still qualify for the tye champions league. Of United have a bad season they don't get into Europe

Maradona didn't do much at Barca. He had a much better career in International football.
You have to take into account a hepatitis in his first season as well as a difficult relationship with Udo Lattek and a broken ankle in his second (and last) though. He scored 38 goals in 58 appearances, winning the Spanish Cup, the League Cup and the Supercup. That's not a bad return.

They're still a big club, and they don't necessarily need to get a current top manager. There're always up and coming talents that can do better than Koeman.

Bartomeu has pretty much done what I did to Liverpool on the old Championship Manager games, bar lining up 11 keepers placed solely on the left side for a 28-0 spanking from United. Even the games prevented you from ruin clubs, but Barcelona board just let Bartomeu create financial havoc.

True but the Barca mess does show that fan ownership can be as bad as disinterested capitalists as far as models go.

Not just Barca on the brink, La Liga is on the brink and going to shit. There’s even lesser chance of players going to La liga with the new financial restrictions in the league.

Yes players love the climate and weather in Spain, but when teams like the premier league can absolutely blow other teams out of the water when it comes to wages etc. it’s hard for Spanish teams to fight against that.

Barca and Madrid are light years away from how good they used to be in recent years. The league is finished. They might as well shut the sport down in Spain.

Many many players. Brilliant city, great stadium, good technical league. Brilliant weather. Its Barcelona and players will line up around the block to play for them.

Perhaps better to post this in here as oppsoed to the Messi thread.

But what's happening with Aguero? He went there to play with Messi, and obviously, that ain't happening. Also, has he officially been registered yet? Considering they're having this problem with their wage bill. Same with Depay. How can they be officially registered?

every cycle ends.......time for Barca and RM to regroup, refocus, clear the debt and go again.....will have to focus on youth and internal production of talent rather than buying the best on the never never......

alternatively, there may well be some rich oil merchant vultures circling to invest heavily in them.......

They have a very good core of young players. Fati, Pedri, de Jong, Moriba, Puig, Mingueza, ...

And they're still a money making machine, even of their revenue will drop without Messi. Make no mistake, before long they will be able to spend heavily again.

Where do people get the idea that Koeman has done poorly for them? Do they only look at the results and not consider:
  • Messi was a training cone on the pitch and didn't want to play when he arrived
  • Griezmann was hot garbage when he arrived
  • Busquets, Alba, Pique are over the hill (to varying extents)
  • Barca's financial trouble means his signings were Dest and Braithwait
  • Barca have overpaid shit players like Umtiti and Dembele
  • All the other players are kids, with the exception of Ter Stegen and De Jong
and he still won a cup and challenged for the title.

With all the clueless comments I read on how La Liga isn't a physical league, I very much doubt people have actually watched a game other than El Classico.

Moriba is forcing a move and they'll be forced to sell at least one of their great young players to comply with the FA's FFP.

Barcelona have won like 5 out of the last 7 cups and played their fifth consecutive final just a season before Koeman joined, I don't think he needs to be given that much credit for winning that title.

The league title challenge was weak overall, they could not win against RM or Atletico and then had a laughable collapse when they looked like they might be able to nick it.

On the other hand, it was a largely young side they played most of the time, and aside from the start of season issues, their main problems were an inability to win big games - something that can very much be chalked up to a combination of inexperience and variance - as well as poor finishing.

Overall, they've looked better under Koeman than they did since Valverde's first season

I never believe Barca are actually in a real crisis. They probably win the 4 of the next 10 CL's or something.

Another idiot executive who can't accept Messi had to leave for the financial health of the club.
It’s not just Messi’s contract that’s the problem. Half the squad is on 200k+ a week they need to sell the shite. They should have got his contract sorted before adding even more deadwood to the squad in Aguero and Memphis.

I bet the majority of Messi’s contract was covered just by the merch he sells for the club, he can’t sign the deal because the teams wage bill is just ridiculous. They pay 450k a week to Pjanic and Sergi Roberto ffs.

Every manager under the sun would want to manage Barcelona.
It wasn’t me that said it. Although, they were rejected by Xavi twice and they currently have an unpopular Everton reject in charge. I’m pretty sure they would take a whole host of managers over him.

Their success came from playing their youth prospects, with just a few big signings mixed in.

They'll be a better team when they go back to that. Messi should have been sold last year or even before and a rebuild started. Money and the neo galactico nonsense Bartomeu was up to ruined the club. Like a kid on football manager!

I look forward to watching them again this season and onward.

They’ve got a brilliant academy that helps a lot. Fati, Moriba, Pedri. Puig are 4 top players coming through plus with Garcia on a free from City that’s 5 highly rated youngsters that will carry them through the next couple of years.

Add in Ter Stegen , De Jong to play alongside a few of the experienced guys and they have a good base to build on. It’s the bang average squad players on 180k a week and the flops like Coutinho on 400k a week that are killing them.
