Fair enough, maybe as a signing he will have a different mentality. I wouldn't say Sancho & VdB are leaders as of yet, what I know is they do want to win.

Look at our squad 2 years ago.. we were toothless no leaders. We signed Maguire, Bruno and others who brought some kind of steele to our team, which now you see has more leaders develop.

My question would be, will Odegaard demand more of Auby? or Lacca? Like when bruno came in he started demanding from these players?
You've defo improved with that regard, I just think it's hard to define leaders or winners, especially with this generation of players. What's easier to define is balance, quality of a team. Get that right & results tend to improve anyway.

As for your last question, I doubt Laca & Auba will be here long anyway. But a lot of times he did act as the trigger for our press. Here he is mic'd up against West Ham.

No since Ole took over, if you have paid any attention to anything he says, he has spoken many times about bringing the right personality.

Maguire, Bruno, Sancho, Cavani then it helps the likes of Rashford, Shaw, McTominay develop into this.
What manager says to PC is just PR stunt, they don't mean exact word by word. Ole said 2nd is a failure, now he uses 2nd as a measure of progress. Henderson was a laughing stock, now he is a winning mentality captain.

When the team is doing well and winning trophies, everyone is a winner and has winning mentality.

Player who left his country at 16 to join Madrid and when he was loaned out, he proved everywhere how good he is. That shows his mentality rather than some PR guff and empty words.

Exactly. Obviously you need players who have that presence but that doesn't mean every player who doesn't have presence doesn't have winning mentality, whatever that means. Some people shout at others, some players lead the example by their performance.

Whilst i'm sure not all these guys will make it to the top level, it's definitely exciting to see such a good set of young players at the club.

I think we need to sign a RB, DM/CM and Striker still before we can TRY to get back into the top 4. I'm hoping for the RB this summer if we sell Bellerin, but the rest will likely be next year and to replace Laca/Elneny.

If we manage to offload: Runarsson, Kolasinac, Bellerin, Torreira, Willian, Nketiah this year, that'll be a huge amount of deadwood gone from the club. Would only really leave us needing to offload Cedric and Elneny next summer, and bringing in a DM and Striker. The issue is, that striker needs to be the best one we can get.

Arsenal's transfers remind me of ours under the LVG era. White I can understand, but Ramsdale is an odd one, especially when you look at Martinez at Villa.

With Ramsdale and Leno, it seems like Arteta will have the selection headache of two subpar GKs.

Relying heavily on Saka and Smith-Rowe in that squad, could be a long season for Arsenal fans.

Yeah I agree, I can see players like Smith Rowe developing into that but they need the right people around him.

Arsenal need a couple of experienced people to say, this is how you train and do things. We were hopeless at it until ole brought in the likes of Cavani who will lead by example on the training ground.

Can Odegaard do this? time will tell then but I would build around Saka, Tierney and the like.

Odegaard is a cracking player. If he improves his end product, he will be one of the best midfielders in the league.

Don't like the term bottling, that comes across as arrogant that we should have been in the final, & considering they went in to beat Utd in the final & with their performance in the Super Cup, Villarreal have shown recently that they are no mugs.

Listen, I do understand what you are saying. All I'm saying is results & some performances improved, but I agree there were still a good few in among that time where we looked poor. Also, I'm intrigued to see how teams / players react when crowds are back.

I'm not defending the manager blindly, & I've said lots of times, unless he improves both results & performance he'll be out the door. All I said was let's see after maybe 10 games or so rather than 1 game where we are.
But no one is judging arteta after one game. He has been here for almost 18 months now and people are judging him on that. Like I said credit to him if he does a 180 and Arsenal start doing exceptionally well but from what we have seen I struggle to see how you guys can finish in top 4 or even challenge for it.

What's funny is finishing 5th under emery or finishing 4th under latter year of wenger was considered a failure but this somehow has been accepted by some arsenal fans. The best thing arteta has done is lowered the standards and have these arsenal fans accept that they are a midtable club.

No, but you are putting in his spending for this season in your earlier post, so you need to let the season at least play out a bit to see if the summers activity makes any difference. Also, not once have I said we can get top 4, because the top 4 is too far ahead, I think its simple as that.

Never judged him for this season's signing. Look at my original post again I said the club has spent 130m so far , so he has been backed and must deliver. If finishing top 4 is not the goal, then what is his goal. 130m, no european football (so one week of rest) and if he still doesn't challenge for top 4 , then surely he is continuing to do a poor job. Surely there has to be some standards he has to match. You don't spend 130m and say no one expects top 4 from him. Emery was abused for far less and here we have this guy getting a free pass for most of the thing.

Arteta is doing a poor job and there is nothing controversial in that statement. And definitely his critics need not wait for another 10 games to judge him. The only difference is now he has been backed even more so the pressure is even higher.

If his and the club's goal was to get top 4 this year, bar Odegaard, these are not the signings we would have made. We tried the "average but experienced player" strategy to try to apply a quick fix and get back in the CL train. It crashed and burned in Baku and to a lesser extent against Villareal a few months ago. We would still have had to beat you in a final so not sure it made a big difference. Signing the likes of Willian, Mari etc was dumb considering the plan has clearly changed. The constant shift and changes in the higher-ups clearly did not help.

If I said that Arsenal would challenge for top 4 with this squad would most on here say I was delusional? Seriously, you guys are better than us, City have just been champions, Chelsea are Champions of Europe, & Liverpool have recently been both of these already, & you think I should demand Arsenal are top 4?

As awop says, when you are buying players that are exclusively U23, you are buying are trying to build a team / squad for the mid term. Do I expect improvement in both results & performances, of course I do. Do I expect us to finish higher than teams that are better than us, can't say I do.

I get that but still feel you guys could do what Leicester have been doing for the past 2 seasons that is challenge for top 4, especially with no European football, you must take an advantage of that. Maybe Chelsea United City and Liverpool are better but what about Spurs, Leicester, Westham. And if someone says after spending 130m Arsenal are still worse than the other 3 mentioned sides then definitely one has to look at the manager. You don't just spend £130m and say that is for the future. I feel a top 4 challenge should be a bare minimum.

Looks the same as 2010 squad to me, you had promising young talents who were under 23 and a great manager. But these lads without a leader on the pitch, having a a bad season, then most of them wanted to leave when the season end.

Even Wenger + champions league football had failed to keep his talented U23 squad, why would Arteta? You have no direction unless you repalce him with a more trusted manager.

Arsenal seriously need a rebuild of their team's foundations, i reckon. It might be worth a couple of years out of contention for Europe if they end up with a cohesive squad and a sense of forward momentum again. Rather than paying top dollar for the types of players who might perform well in the short term but who will come on big wages and leave Arsenal in this same kind of situation in a year or 2. And likely not get top 4 anyway.

That said, arsenal's recruitment seems pretty scattergun at this point, and I get the sense that the club is going for quantity of young players because it doesn't really have confidence that it is signing the right players.

At least it's a clear strategy though, and at least if these players don't work out they won't be stuck at arsenal indefinitely on massive wages. Pepe, Aubameyang, Willian and Lacazette have to be the most overpaid attack in the world, and not too long ago Ozil was there too! Arsenal really need to avoid repeating that mistake.

On that note, the Xhaka renewal makes no sense to me.

Difference is that the young talented players have a greater chance of staying if we are on the up. ESR, Saka are youth products, Odegaard has had his taste of the big time. Tierney just signed a contract extension. There's a reasonable chance that White/Gabriel also stay for a long time. Thats 6 players that can play at least for half a decade.

I expect better performances, & I expect better results. I've spoke about my expectations a lot on here, remember a good discussion with @Hansi Fick. For me, rather than set a place target, I'd set a points target. We were terrible up until Xmas, & we eventually finished with 61 points. I'd be setting a target of say 70 points, & just seeing where that gets you.

I am impressed at how much they can spend. I think they have matched our spending in the last two windows inspire of not having CL.

In terms of their squad, they have some talent and many expensive players now (I counted over 6 that are €50m + players). The one question mark, I have is that a lot of their players are either too young or past it or have not really established themselves (Pepe / partey).

They're squad is looking more akin to an Everton/West Ham level of squad. They're nowhere near a top 6 side anymore.

So we are like a West Ham squad, miles off top 6, a West Ham squad that finished....6th. :houllier:

You need a leader and someone who can be trusted by all the players to rebuild. You dont have both of these characters right now.

You know exactly what I mean.

There's a top 5 (United, City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester) with a few clubs hovering around the 6th spot like Everton, West Ham and Spurs all bunched in a 6-10 spot group. West Ham just happened to secure that 6th placed spot last season but it could have been a couple of others... and may well be this season.

Arsenal are at the bottom end of that next grouping, hence nowhere near a top 6 spot. They will probably finish even lower than 8th this time round.

I think no European football will help Arsenal. Always feel a better manager can take this side closer to 4th. They may not be a great squad but still I feel a much better squad than westham. Them finishing 8th has more to do with arteta's incompetence than squad being shit.

We've agreed on, I believe, 18 points from the first 10 games. You predicted that Arsenal might lose the opener to Brentford :D, I said that's alright as long as the points are made good in another game... no better opportunity than against Chelsea

I don't think there's much between Leicester & ourselves personally, but can understand why folk think otherwise.

If it does end up like that, at least we'll have a new manager to look forward to.

I did predict that eh? :wenger: Didn't expect it to happen with half a team missing mind you, not an ideal way to start a season.

Im actually not holding out much hope the next couple of games, think Arteta's fate might be decided with results in the next 6, Norwich, Burnley, Spurs, Brighton, Palace & Villa.

What? Clichy wasn't our youth product, neigther was Fabregas, Nasri, Song. And the leader thing is just some lazy thinking, you need good players on the pitch, leadership is not a substitute for talent.

£132m spent whilst slightly improving on last years squad
We finished on 61 points. A slight improvement gets us top six, which is the highest we can get to really. Top four is too far away.

If you don’t fire Arteta you won’t make Europe again. It’s going to be really hard for you guys since competition around you is so strong. The top 5 is settled. That leaves West Ham, Spurs, Arsenal, Everton and Aston Villa all fighting for 1-2 spots.
