That's not disagreeing, that's insulting.
Now imagine you’re Phil Jones and that’s happening to you and your family only much worse on a regular basis. Your comment was similar to the ones Jones was speaking out about on Twitter.

No, it's not. Even Ronaldo and Messi get these kind of comments, let alone Phil Jones. If he can't cope with comments like this then he should quit football. Comments others are talking about are different thpigh.

Can you remember the abuse the likes of Rashford, Smalling, etc. got while they were here? And they are/were far better player for Manchester United and didn't deserve any of it.

I think Phil Jones is a good defender when fit. Not good enough for the starting eleven, but certainly good enough to be the 5th choice squad player. Is it best he stay or go somewhere else? I don't know, I'd consider keeping him as long as he's not supposed to be first choice. You can't have world class or even top class players as your 5th choice anyway.

He's been unlucky with injuries but still achieved more than 99,5 % of all footballers.

Am I the only one who think it’s unacceptable that the club allowed him to play on injections for 3 years and completely fecked it up? It’s commendable that we stuck by him and gave him a new contract, but our approach created the issue in the first place.

He had the same injury which kept Ole out for 3 years. I think his injury issues have not been communicated properly.
And? He's still getting paid 100k every week for sitting in the medical room. Everyone can feel sorry for him, his story is sad, but it's not like he is starving to death or anything. And as far as abuse goes, every gets it. fecking hell, even the GOATs Ronaldo and Messi have had it plenty. Phil isn't exactly special in that regard. The club should have gotten rid a long time ago. Bale's been injury prone and Madrid has been looking to offload him for ages despite the fact that he won them multiple CL's and he was absolutely clinical in Ancelotti's CL run. This may sound cruel, but the reality is that as long as this club is run on santimentality, we'll remain a joke other clubs would laugh at.

And his comments about the keyboard warriors are totally uncalled for. FFS, those people you're insulting are the guy that pay your wages because the Glazers surely aren't lining their own pockets to do it. Have some respect, regardless of their appearance or whatever. They have a right to be angry when you're stealing a living while they are working 9/5 every day.

Yeah, didn't see the link for entire article so it seems more sensible after reading it.

Still, explained my stance on Jones few times before, if he was at any other club he would be long time gone, he can thank United and Ole for keeping him and helping him that much.
Yeah that's why I linked the article.

Phil Jones as a player can be criticised but sending death threats to his wife and insulting him when he is out with his little kid is bang out of order. Ole clearly sympathises with him considering he had the same injury and if we hadn't given him the contract his career would have been over. He might still recover and have a career at this moment so I don't mind the contract knowing what happened with him.

Given the recent news about his challenges with mental health and online abuse. Would it be possible to change the thread pictures to slightly more flattering ones @MyOnlySolskjaer .

While I know there is no malice in it and they are humorous; I think we should show a bit more respect.

Is this man gonna make a DM comeback or not then?
His body cannot cope with football. Last time he played a match was before the world went to shit in a pandemic.

I feel sorry for him because mentally it must be a big challenge to keep fighting the injury troubles. But, he still makes more in a week than 99% of folks make in an year. And, he continues to remain on a fat contract for another two and a half season despite doing nothing.

I've written several posts detailing my disgust of how the fanbase have alienated Phil Jones from the club and made him feel like a pariah, to the point where he doesn't even want a testimonial because he feels like no one would show up.

So here you have it, he's struggling with a professionally delibitating injury. Genuinely, I'd love if some of our so called fans could just go join the ranks at the Ethiad instead. Toxic vermin.

His multiple issues time and time again
I had a go at someone yesterday who was saying he hates Jones situation sitting on the bench claiming money for nothing

it’s a stupid internet narrative that’s grown legs because people are too lazy to look the facts up

This. Give him job in club or something but keeping first team player who is obviously finished at top level is just stupid.
Sorry but how can you say someone is finished when he’s out injured? He was literally in the England squad before his injury. Use your noggin

I’ve echoed this statement over the years also, to the point where I don’t come in here anymore because the spouting of shit about Jones annoys me too much.

People need to realise that there’s a person on the other end of those insults who’s probably mentally shot to shit. Hopefully now he’s finally spoken out about the impact this has had on him most people will grow the feck up.

The people who think money means players should put up with anything must have really shitty jobs.

Good on him for fighting back and to the 'fans' trying to climb down now after being made to look a twat - not everyone was piling on, it was obvious that he was having a serious injury problem and no footballer deserves to be ridiculed like that for being injured.

I said at highest level, where you must play game every 3,4 days and stay fit. Injury can happen to any player but lets be honest, even before this "newest" injury, he was extremely injury prone. It was nailed that after 4,5 games in a row, he will pick up some injury.

Sympathy is one thing but reality is another.

For me it's more frustration that he's been injured for so long so many times.
He's not reliable up to now and he's taking up a place and money that could be used somewhere else. He's unfortunate in one way and extremely lucky in another

I do however hope he makes a come back of some use and longevity to end his career on a high note but I expect him to get injured again.
I hope I'm wrong

Yeah Solskjaer and the Club could have been a lot less vague over the last 18 months about the seriousness and extent of his injuries.

Pretty sad read, it's seems obvious in hindsight, but never really knew how bad his knee is/was.

I can understand us giving him a new contract to an extent but given his injury problems paying him circa £100k a week for 4 years looks even crazier now.

If anyone is interested in reading the full article. It's actually good read.

Thanks for sharing!

Had missed this and Ole's comments. Good on Ole! Happy for Jones that he's getting closer to a return. If he's fit I hope he, at least, gets a chance in cup games.

There's nothing wrong with what I wrote. You need to get off your high horse and start looking at things objectively. He was rewarded with a 5 year contract back in February 2019 despite have a troubling injury history and shocking form whenever he played. Since his renewal he has made just 11 appearances and as I mentioned in my initial post, he hasn't played at all for almost 2 years. Our wage bill has gone up 30% after this summer, thanks to big signings. But, we don't help ourselves when we reward mediocre/injury-prone with big/fat contracts who not only cost club a lot of money in wages but don't have a lot of suitors either.

Great man once said, there is no room for sentimentality in football. What we are doing with Jones is nothing but that. I can feel sorry for him going through this but at the same time recognize he's still in an extremely privileged position, where any serious club would have sold/released him a while back. We don't have a bottomless pit of money to keep squandering it for sentimental reason on likes of Jones, Mata, Grant etc. They all add up to the wage bill.

Who gives a shit? Really? Jones has literally given his body to the club over the years.

I mean, it’s a pretty reasonable post, no?

It’s unfortunate Jones is the butt of many fans jokes, and of course it’s a nightmare to be injured for large periods of time for any footballer, but let’s not pretend he isn’t in an unbelievably privileged position here. He has earned more money in the last 2 years than most people earn in a lifetime, for doing nothing.

No they wouldn't you fool. Inter hasn't "gotten rid" of Eriksen, and in his case we know for a fact he will never play for them. Also there's nothing to be gained by releasing Jones as both parties have signed a contract.

You and many others don't seem to understand how a contract works. It's been explained before regarding Jones. Use the search function or google.

No one releases an injured player.
He was given a contract when fit.
Since then he’s had a career threatening injury and been out for 2 years.

I’ll put it simple for those that don’t get it

He hasn’t been doing nothing, and he hasn’t played because he’s been injured for almost 2 years

Ignoring the childish insult, weird to compare Jones situation with Eriksen. Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest which is completely different to Jones injury issues which range from ankle to shin to knee to back, etc. Besides, Eriksen is aiming to return in few months and if he can't, then almost assuredly his contract would be terminated. One is possibly a career ending issue, which no one returns from compared to persistent injury troubles of Jones.

Point is, we were foolish to reward him with a 4+1 deal in the first place because a) his injury record was poor and b) whenever he actually played, he was more often than not a liability. No competently run club would've given him a new contract in 2019 like we did. But, we continue to make same mistakes till date. We rewarded Bailly with a fresh deal when his injury record is shocking, not to mention he's not particularly good. Same with Mata and Grant deals, we squander too much money. We have to improve in this regard, and if it means being more ruthless, then so be it.

Woefully uninformed post.
  1. Eriksen will never play for Inter again, it's illegal for him to play in Serie A
  2. Jones' injuries may very well have been career ending
  3. Player's have continued their career after a cardiac arrest, Blind did it twice
  4. Every club would have given Jones a contract in 2019, just not the one we gave him
  5. His contract can't be willy nilly terminated
  6. You clearly don't know what a contract is
You went on a massive rant that an injury prone player shouldn't be given such a deal. Who do you see disagreeing with that?

We can't cut his salary even if we wanted. He was on the bench in mid February 2020 and he's already played for the club unofficially (which a court would still consider "on the job").

It's been discussed in detail before with better sources, use the search function if you're interest. A quick google will give you:

Do Footballers Get Paid the Same When Injured?
Usually, yes. It would have to be an extremely long-term injury to prevent them being paid their full salary while sidelined.

All professional footballers in England are entitled to 18 months’ pay while injured before there is a chance that their salary will be cut, or even halved. If the injury or illness is picked up while not on ‘club duty’, the club may only pay their basic salary for up to a year.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jones got a new contract as he will prove the naysayers wrong. Must be great for him to finally get his knee properly fixed after all these problem ridden years. Jones being 100% fit is a better option than Lindelöf, he can for sure provide great cover for Maguire/Varane when needed.

We just didn't know the extent of his long-term injuries, we always knew he had potential as SAF was one of his biggest fans, but he still have a few years left to end his career on a high, just like RVP did with us after injury-ridden seasons.
