It wasn’t ours but the Falcao chant is/was elite

There's a long list of reasons for why the chant sucks:

Racism:
Reducing an Asian culture into a bunch of dog-eaters, even though it's pretty niche. It's especially bad when you know that eating dogs is frowned upon, so it also comes off as an insult, regardless of your intentions.

Hypocrisy:
The notion that eating dogs somehow is especially disgusting, even though pigs are more intelligent and make great pets as well. I doubt the average football fan gleefully singing this chant don't eat pork.

Classism:
Why rip on council houses? Just why?

The chant doesn't even honor Park:
The chant is mainly mocking Liverpool. As a player chant it's essentially useless.

TLDR; the chant can feck right off.
Good post. Completely agree. It definitely lacks class. There is nothing positive about Park in it. The fans should not sing it.

On Saturday I heard this chant twice. Once at Hotel Futbol pre-kick off & once inside the stadium.

Was Atletico’s wasn’t it? Or even earlier when he was at Porto? But yeah that was class.
Just thinking now — Zlatan’s was decent too. Zlatan Ibrahimovic he is a Swedish hero… Cavani’s too?

Maybe it’s only top tier strikers we’re good with chanting about?

Some chant for a player of your own. Not even something positive about the guy, just saying that he comes from a country where they eat dogs.

He should have said something earlier. Quite disrespectful to say the least.

I’ve never understood why you’d chant something insulting or degrading in ‘support‘ of your player. Even the Maguire massive head chant is strange to me. Banter is usually at the expense of the opponent.

This one seems pretty straightforward though. Hugely respected former player, from Korea says a song sung about him is racially insulting to Koreans. If you’re not Korean you have no place to argue otherwise. He has asked for it to stop so it should, no questions asked.

We have one of the most historical and impressive songbooks in the league. The fact you bring up the above dross to disparage it is ridiculously out of context and borderline disrespectful tbh.

I can only assume you are completely clueless.

Strange that the man it’s directed to is saying it’s not a nice chant with racist undertones and yet people still want to defend it. It doesn’t matter if it started out as banter or with good intentions toward him, it isn’t.

Yes it will stop now, which it largely already had regardless.

That’s not true, there were plenty of black people on this forum alone who didn’t like it.
No doubt many black people were fed up with it. My main concern was the outrage from the media about it, the same journalist who for decades had themselves been only emphasising physical attributes of black players and never once gave black players credit for intelligence in their play, movement or passes.

Eg lukaku runs = power, Speed, and Strength never once had I heard a journalist praise the intelligence of his timing and movement.

Pogba = athletic related attributes never once had I read a journalist praise him for being intelligent or technical, same with Kante. Yet contrast it to white players that play on the same positions and in a similar fashion.

So I found the journalist outrage to the lukaku chant both hilarious and disingenuous and a sign of their own insecurity.

Tbh I found the English football chants in general pretty juvenile and rough on the ear as a whole, even the famed ‘self deprecating humour’ in them is overblown. If you look at a ‘funny chants compilation’ for instance, you will find gems such as ‘we are going down, but straight back up’, ‘there’s only one Ed Woodward’, ‘she said no Fergie’, ‘you are nothing special, we lose every week’. Maybe understanding the language makes the chants lose their lusters, and they are universally just as unoriginal and juvenile, but I always enjoy the atmosphere of the BL or big Spanish/South American matches more.

It’s a point of pride for you then fair enough, but it’s just down to taste and I don’t think every statement I make on an online platform need to be preface with ‘IMO/from my POV’.

If a black person says calling another person the N word is fine, I can't question it because I'm white?
Thats not quite the same. Black people use that word in a different context to a white person using it as a racial slur. It’s a cultural thing. Not being part of that culture, whilst I assume you would be arguing that it is still racist whoever says it, I think the understanding is different because of your background. I don’t think you can take a one size fits all approach.
However, if somebody clearly says ‘that’s racially offensive to me and my countrymen’ then it shouldn‘t be questioned. If you are not from Korea, you won’t understand how Park feels or empathise when he hear that term. If you don’t understand how that feels then I would argue you are poorly placed to speak up against it.

You have just shown that same lack of knowledge as an estimated 1 million dogs are slaughtered every year in South Korea for human consumption.
Can't be serious?
They're eaten all over the world, but not exclusively to China in South-East Asia. Vietnam - particularly in the North - eats dog, and you will see it very publicly, as well as in Korea where there is a long tradition of the practice that is still carried out today.

On mature reflection and having given the matter the utmost of consideration, the hill I’ve chosen to die on is [checks notes]………singing a song about Koreans eating dogs. I shall not be taking any further questions.

It’s easy really, mate.

If Korean human being Park, who is literally the subject of the song, says it’s horrible and offensive, you learn from it, and stop singing the stupid song and you shut the feck up whining about it.

The only conversation should be about the fact that the guy had to listen to it week in week out for fecking years and obviously felt it was best to not ask for it to stop at the time.

Simple really. Be grateful for the awesome service this great player gave to Utd, learn from what he’s told you, and if that’s too difficult, just shut up.

Slightly off topic but is the eating dog things genuine or one of those stereotypes which stick? What I mean is, have crafty food salesmen sold dog meat in pretence of it being something else or is it genuinely advertised as dog meat for sale?

I’m genuinely curious.

Yup. This is it really. I don’t get how the player who the chant is about says he doesn’t like it, it’s offensive and we should stop, and you still have people in here arguing that it’s not a big deal. The people dying on this hill should be ashamed.

It's both. Similar situation to other Asian countries, a minority consume it but many people espeically in urban/metropolitan area dont and are even repulsed by it. It's like saying Americans are gun nuts or French like cheese.

Used to sing it a lot back when attending games years ago without really thinking it would be offensive. I always like the chant, but if Park himself wants it stopped, it should be stopped.

Think Vida came out saying the same about his own chant, so their opinions should be respected considering the songs are about them.
