Much higher. Like the highest.
Gotcha, not the highest maybe but one of them. That game totally hooked me from start to finish. Only recently played it through again and one game that I’d totally love to see get a carefully done remake. Imagine a full blown next gen makeover, could be epic.

We'd need to narrow down the finalists by picking the best games from each era.
Are we going as far back as Pong? Do we start with the rise of console gaming in the 80s? Do we count arcade cabinets?

We just need to stop @Massive Spanner from only voting for Nintendo games.

Do you mean a remake of the remake or...? Because that's only three years old.

Technical masterpiece but divisive. I personally think it’s great but wouldn’t rank in my greatest list.
I didn't realise it was divisive - what do people have against it? I LOVED it and it'd be right up there for me. Personal taste, I guess...

Bluepoint did a full remake a few years back

Full remake. The recent one was only a remaster. Looked great but I mean a full fat, enhanced graphics and controls from the ground up remake. Could be spectacular.

Some people found it slow and boring. While I enjoyed it I could see their point. I think more could have been made of the survival aspects of the game, the world was breathtaking but never really felt too dangerous.

It was a remake, by Bluepoint. They remade all assets from the ground up and even introduced a new control scheme. They did a PS3 remaster earlier, maybe you're thinking about that?

There is no way a game that had been remastered and then remade will get another remake any time soon. This isn't Rockstar and GTA V.

I’ve literally just started downloading it to make sure I’ve played the most recent one

Wouldn't make mine either. And I understand RDR's inclusion over RDR2. For it's time, RDR was the better game IMO. RDR2 was a leap in storytelling and character arcs as you'd expect from the advancement of time, but the gameplay was from the RDR era which I found lame.

We should have options to pick five games from every console (and PC). Then after that we throw the Nintendo ones out and pit the winners of the others against each other. By default there will be no Microsoft games which should make things easier also.

I would have like a more raw and survival based game. The world they built was incredible.

Yup that world with a more varied and malleable gameplay would have been something. But that's rockstar's thing to be fair. Nobody plays GTA for it's shooting mechanics either.

It’s ultimately why I never finish their games. Initial wow factor wears off.

Imagine if they ditched all or some of the time spent building the story’s and missions and invested in ai for the NPCs and creatures. A proper sandbox. Would be phenomenal.

GTA IV story was much better than GTA V… don’t @me

also, uncharted 2 and 4 are easily up there in Top 10 goat games. This list is bullshit.

I haven’t played GTAV in nearly 6 years and probably won’t play it again. Forgettable game for single player.
GTA IV was probably their pinnacle in terms of building up characters personality and overall the missions are well mixed into the game story overall. The game graphics are still quite good if you play at maximum, to be honest.
But GTA V created a lot of forks: Rolepaly, Parkour, Racing, and the online version was a success. But yeah, single player experience was not so good, but CEOs pretty sure preferred to make money over developing more story line content and looking how GTA V is still a gold mine (they made 1 billion out of GTA V in 2020), most people would have done the same.

True but I think the market for an appealing story/characters is huge. It's just that I wish the gameplay wasn't that average. Anyhow it was still very enjoyable.

Then I guess I wish the story and characters made a bit more use of the world. Dunno, something didn’t quite hit the mark for me. Very, very good and very beautiful just not one of the greatest.

Same with another game a lot of people lived, Ghost of Tshunima. Looked lovely, played very well but I just couldn’t connect with it.

I still love Skool Daze that was something else when it came out. That would make my list.

Yeah that's the worst kind of criticism for it and it shouldn't be taken seriously. I'd happily admit the flawed controls which made the game a mindfeck at times, but in terms of pacing, storytelling, interacting with the gameworld, building character arcs, the amount of quests and activities with tha diversity of characters, and of course the insane technical prowess in terms of graphics and detailing, this is a benchmark against what games for a long time will be compared against. Someone here was saying God of Ringing Bells would be discussed for a long time to come, as good and enjoyable that was, you are gonna be talking about RDR2 for a long time. Again surely it is not 100% perfect (which game is?) but overall it is pretty much a masterpiece and the technical effort that went into detailing out that gameworld is insane. Arthur is pretty much the best character arc created in last gen, with the best acting I've seen in a game.

I think more could have been made of the survival aspects of the game, the world was breathtaking but never really felt too dangerous.
Yeah, I think that's fair. Although that again depends on you and you can go on a bloodbath in St. Denis and have an army chasing you. But then it would have become insanely tedious if you were to interact with everything as it is while also running out of resources, constantly being attacked etc. They needed to balance that.

I get you. Despite the PS4 version being really well done it did feel like something was lost. The world was similarly empty and fearsome but they didn't quite capture the existential barrenness as well as the original - perhaps the muddy visuals added something I didn't quite appreciate at the time.

The best version for me is still the PS3 remaster. It fixed all the technical problems of the PS2 version without changing too much.

Not sure I'd be up for a total remaster unless it were headed by Ueda and Team Ico and I gather they're no longer in the game :(

Agreed with all of that. Even so, I’d struggle to put it in my greatest games list and that is the conundrum. No argument is is a great game, just not on my list. I’m actually playing through it again currently as I never really started to explore and hunt legendary animals and fish until (no spoilers) it was too late. I’m trying to just be in the world a bit more and ignore the missions for a while now. And it looks stunning on ps5

Is God of War really that good? I know it's super hyped but as I'm a PC guy I've never had the pleasure.
I bought a 2nd hand PS4 in 2019 to play Last of Us, God of War and Spider-Man. Best money I spent that year hands down.

I’ve actually downloaded the ps4 version and am having a quick blast. Looks great. Great, truly great game. Sounds great. But they still didn’t fix the only negative for me. The camera.

I know it’s such a small thing but it pisses me off that it doesn’t let me control it as well as I’m used to.

Still, like I said, easily in my top 20 games ever. Such an emotional and majestic ride.

I just didn't warm up to story or gameplay. I tried 3 times and can't get more than 10-15 hours on it each time.

Yeah for sure, I mean in the end we are talking about video games and having fun and enjoyment is more important than anything. And there are quite a few games that I've had an absolute blast playing over and over and over again for years. Totally agreed on the second playthrough, I will do that as well. The first one always makes you rush towards the story and after the end it is a bit weird doing the side stuff but it deserves a proper explorative playthrough. It would be criminal if they don't expand and give us a DLC for this insane gameworld.

I stand humbly corrected. The version I played recently was the classic HD on PlayStation now. Just downloading the PS4 version.
Have fun with that then! I've actually yet to play it, it's been on my list for a while now.

RDR2 is my number 1 possibly. I'm just starting a replay of it. All about immersion for me and the graphics are superb too. It was easy but I don't look for super difficult games I want to relax most of the time. I do hope they remake the first one I've not played that.

Gotta keep patience because it just keeps on getting better and better. Some of those final missions were just  !
I can understand keeping patience past the first 5 hours. But 15 hours is 5 x 3hr-long gaming sessions. if by the end of that you're not hooked, perhaps it's not the game for you (me, in this case).

Games like Skyrim, Last of Us, Arkham Knight, God of War... they had me so hooked 5 hours in that I was thinking about when I'd play them next. I didn't get that feel with RDR2 at all, despite trying it again and again.
