Begins Monday with jury selection.

As a reminder, Arbery was the young African American who was basically lynched by three white locals while jogging through their neighborhood in Brunswick, GA. Arbery was shot with a shotgun after a brief scuffle begun by the other three participants.

Here is a link to the Atlanta Journal Constitution with quite a few articles that add background to the murder / trial - one can easily see the horseshit machinations undertaken by the defense to try to both whitewash their client & smear Arbery...

I don't know much about laws or what constitutes a capital crime in Georgia but do we have a side of aggravated battery along with this inhuman murder?

Just read a NPR article with some quotes from the defense attorneys. Christ. I know it’s their job, but still makes the blood boil.

Hope they get put away for life.

not able to read in Europe. Please can you summarise?
Defense wanted to move the protests in front of the courthouse to a square out of sight of it, claiming the prospective jurors would be intimidated or swayed in their views by it.

Judge quickly shot it down citing the First Amendment.

Judge finds 'intentional discrimination' in Arbery jury selection but allows trial to move forward with 1 Black member

"It would appear that White males born in the South, over 40 years of age, without four-year college degrees, sometimes euphemistically known as 'Bubba' or 'Joe Six Pack,' seem to be significantly underrepresented," defense attorney Kevin Gough, who represents Bryan, told the court Friday.

"Without meaning to be stereotypical in any way, I do think there is a real question in this case whether that demographic is underrepresented in this jury pool," Gough added. "And if it is, then we have a problem with that."

"Participation in the jury pool is important, but only so much to establish diversity of race and perhaps gender, but not 'Bubba' background, whatever that may be," Pate said. "I've represented doctors who have gone on trial. Now, was my jury made up of a bunch of doctors? Of course not."

"Even if there were no 'Bubbas,' as long as the lawyers are not removing people solely because of race, there's really no problem," Pate said. "You have no legal right to a 'Bubba'-rich jury pool."

A black man was murdered and the jury consists of 11 white members and 1 black man in a state with a significant black population. The writing is on the wall.

This one will be a guilty verdict from the facts I am aware of- but you never know how its been manipulated online. While Arbery did attempt to grab the gun I think there is sufficient instigation on the defendant's part to void the self-defence privilege since they have no right to make a citizen's arrest, from what I understand.

Just say you're a white male and you basically get arrested these days.

You have to wonder how the judge’s conversation with his wife at the dinner table went that night after the ‘Bubba’ tête-à-tête.

Unbelievable.

There is an arcane Civil War-era law that allows for armed citizens arrests iirc, circa 1863.

You can imagine why such a law came into existence.

I'm actually watching the Rittenhouse trial (the defence lawyers are terrible, but the prosecutor is basically showing videos of how self-defense-y it was but running his commentary over it and hoping noone notices), but heard that so far everything is going well for the prosecution on Arbery - no evidence about mental health, criminality or drug use will be admitted.
Judge in the Arbery trial seems far more competent & fair than the one in Wisconsin.

The city this took place in, Brunswick, has a high African American population 55%, 40% white.

Just outside Brunswick proper in a rather lily white enclave. The jury make up surprised the hell out of me knowing the racial makeup of the city.

Should cases like these even be decided by juries?
No matter how you cut it, significant number of jurors are racist. When you need a unanimous verdict for conviction, how is it possible?
There was this thinking with the Floyd murder but Chauvin was convicted.

From everything Drainy has said, I'll be surprised if Rittenhouse doesn't walk on the murder charges.

It'll be beyond disgraceful if Arbery's killers walk free too. As far as I'm aware everything about that case was released at the time with the video of the chase and killing, McMichael's phone call etc. There's absolutely no justification for what they did.

Thank you for splitting the threads. That joint one was confusing. This is the trial I'm far more interested in because of how egregious it is.
