Sadly though, from what is being shown at the current stages of their career, Varane is just proving to be a very poor man's Thiago Silva. Although Varane is way younger, he is showing to be more injury prone, less fit and half the defender Thiago Silva is. You might even think Varane is already in his 30's and near Sergio Ramos' age.

His passing is maybe “fine” but not good enough. It doesn’t open up, it doesn’t make us advance. It’s not a young talent or an average player we are talking about, it’s the highest paid defender in the PL. It’s fair to expect something above average and more than “fine”.
He's always been a CB that shies away from responsibility in the build up. This is completely fine if he pairs well with the other players.

Is this a WUM take?
He's had one poor game and the other few were all good.

He also may have been rushed back from his first injury and it's too small a sample size to make the claim he's injury prone.

Maybe we should be expecting this from the midfield more and not the CBs. His passing is fine, he spreads the play well and can pass into the forwards too.

Things look a lot worse because the midfield does nothing
Agree the midfield is poor but this is his thread and I think his passing could improve as well.

It truly is. If Varane was Swedish, the judgement would have been 'played well, defended and cleared everything in front of him in a disjointed team'. Any other player and it's basically no benefit of the doubt given with much harsher views. It's fanatical bias and devotion.
How could thinking his passing is not adventurous being fanatical bias? I guess you don’t agree with me and you think his passing is amazing and adventurous?
Edit: give a few examples where his passing was adventurous in his last matches?

Could be but he could step up a notch from what we’ve seen in the last matches.

Nope. Just hugely disappointed. Thought he will solidify our defensive backline and hoped he had this leadership qualities of Thiago Silva that will give our other CBs like Maguire some spine and solidarity for once. Was good initially but have regressed after a spate of injuries and seems to be infected with whatever bug that is going around the dressing room that made our form drop off a cliff.

How has he regressed after injury when only his first game coming back was bad, and the second was good?

If you were expecting some sort of really vocal leader you really didn't know him that well. He's super laid back.

He did improve us. Him and Lindelof were great together whenever they've played. It doesn't matter who you put next to Maguire in the form he's been in, even prime VVD wouldn't be able to hold his hand.

Yep, very good tonight, we really need to find an equally good partner, everyone else we have has too many mistakes in them.

Varane is one of the few players who can leave the field thinking he did okay tonight. Nothing more than okay. However, it was at least acceptable.

Thought he was fantastic. We were swarmed on all other areas of the team but David had little to do thanks to he and Lindelof. It’s like they got to the edge of the box and shot because they gave nothing away or else they were blocking the cut backs from the byline with ease

Very good again tonight. I really don't think people realize how much he has to do in this team compared to his France/old Madrid teams either. When the likes of Bruno, Rashford, McT, and Fred are just constantly losing the ball in dangerous areas it puts a ton of stress on these defenders and he looked comfortable tonight .

Just said in the interview we where compact and had a good match. With standards like that, there's no hope.

He was very good tonight, always a step ahead of the play. What we bought him for.

Best performance so far for United.

Varane and Maguire are our best CB partnership, I am sure about that. We need to get them playing together as often as possible between now and the end of the season, in preparation for whatever we do next season.

I just don't know how you can still say with confidence that Maguire is the best partner for Varane.

Good game shame we don’t have a CB who isn’t shite to play alongside him. Maguire is probably the best of a bad lot .

F doubt.

I think someone properly aggressive like Bailly would be his best partner. Let's see if he can stay fit through ACON.

Class player from a class team. He must be startled at how bad so many are here coming from Madrid.

I'm not sure Lindelof is his best partner either, both him and Maguire seem utterly chaotic

Lucky to have him. I just hope we can build a decent team with him while he’s still in his prime.

Good game but I’m a bit surprised how poor his long range passing has been for us, I thought it was a strength of his. Hopefully it’s just a case of getting into his rhythm, in the meantime we need Maguire to find form because we lack ball playing ability from the back now which helps the opposition sustain pressure.

Going off his insta since joining us you can tell he admired and enjoys the intensity of English football. Its great to see that he is relishing the challenge. He will be great for us providing he stays fit.

A cliche, but a Rolls Royce is a fair metaphor for his performance today. The man oozes class and if he can make Phil Jones look like Paolo Maldini in one lesson maybe he teach Harry Maguire how to be a proper Manchester United CB over the course of the rest of the season.

 what do you expect him to say? Do you want him to throw his teammates under the bus and say we weren't good enough? I'm amazed how seriously people take post-match interviews and press conferences.

Thought he had a great game tonight, did he put a foot wrong? I don't recall him doing so
He did. He jogged very slowly when Lindelof misjudged the long ball and luckily the shot hit the post. There was no urgency at all to cover for his team mate.

He doesnt bring the confidence we hoped for, he also looks slow and nervous.

I still think Florentino sold him to us because he knew Varane wasnt a world-class defender anymore. Madrid doesnt miss him for a reason.

So dissapointing.

my view is that we look better back there whenever he plays. We didn’t get a 30+ defender from Real, he is 28 years old and still has lots of years ahead provided he stays fit. It’s unfortunate that he came into a struggling team. Some basic defending issues and poor positioning from our midfielders. I saw him yesterday coming up with the ball and screaming for a midfielder to make himself available for a pass. He has also not yet established a proper partnership with anyone as he hasn’t had a good run of games (injuries plus rotation of the other CB).
