Too good to be true but if he’s available just get him. He has the potential to be world class.

He won't be WC here until we sort the midfield out. We will be a graveyard for defenders until the DM specialist is here.

Tier 1 for Barcelona

"Ronald Araújo has many interesting offers, his renewal will be tough. Barcelona will have to make an effort and know that the offers from European clubs are much higher than Barcelona’s now and despite everything, they cannot go crazy and offer crazy amounts outside of fair play".

How come his wage demand are that high? He's surely not as important as the likes of Pedri at Barcelona.

Probably because some english club gave him a really high offer.

I dont know him well at all. I would really like to see us pursue Pau Torres again if we are going to hire ETH. I think Man Utd needs a player who is ace in the build up. The build up of Ajax, whenever I see them, rely heavily on Blind. Pau Torres would be that option for us. Probably the best passer of the ball in the world at CB right now.

Doesn’t Blind play LB again now?

Yes, he does, but watch his passing in the build up from LB. He is very essential to their build up. Shaw is actually a good passer of the ball, but he can never do that. I think we either need to improve/change our fullbacks or make sure we have a CB who gives a possession based coach more options. Since we are looking at a CB anyway, I think someone like Torres would make sense.

Torres and Lindelof are too similar and with Varane made of balsa wood they’d end up playing together quite often

Nah, not at all. Not more similar than the CBs at City. Torres is quicker, and way more agile, than any of our CBs.

If anything, Lindelof is very similar to Torres current partner, Raul Albiol. In fact, stats show that Lindelof is more aggressive and proactive than Albiol. And Torres/Albiol looks great together!

That’s strange because watching them it’s not what would come to mind. Then again albiol is like 200 years old so maybe that’s true

Barcelona should make a small effort to renew him.
It doesn't make sense to sign Christensen with a higher salary because it includes a signing bonus and that you miss Araujo for free or at a very low price.

I hope that it will be part of the negotiation and end up renewing.

He is a very important player for Barcelona right now and for the future.

The more I see P. Torres, the less I like him.
Varane is much faster.

The great quality of Pau Torres is his quality in the pass and his vision of the game.

He is slow and loses in aerial duels despite being very tall.
Kounde is much better with 15 cm less.

I prefer to pay €80M for Kounde than €65M for Pau Torres

This guy looks quality whenever I have seen him, which admittedly has been 5 or 6 times total. I feel like he'd slot into the PL better than the likes of Pau Torres, what would the resident Spanish experts say here?

Maybe he was. Highly doubt he is. Looks much slower and less agile than a few years ago. Torres is deceptively quick. Think he was in the top 5 of highest top speed measured in La Liga a year ago.

But yes, Kounde is great too if you want to implement a possession style.

That being said, I really think it is a question of how you want to play. Rangnick recently spoke about how Man City/LFC recruit in accordance with their identity and how they wanna play. This is a good example.

The two teams in Europe who let the opponent have the fewest touches in their box is Atletico and Man City.

Man City deny their opponent by keeping the ball alot. Even Pep say that they are not good at defending. Atletico, on the other hand, are just really great of the ball, using basically defenders in midfield.

And then you have Liverpool who;

A) Make sure they are good at keeping the ball
B) Set a high line ensuring that they have really physical and fast CBs who is difficult to play against on the break

I really think you are right that Torres/Lindelof would be to similar if we are going to play like Atletico. Or maybe even like we did with Mourinho. But if are serious about implementing a possession style we probably need CBs who can handle that type of style.

Based on what I have read about Araujo, I guess he would be very well suited for the Liverpool type of style?

I do think Pochettino and Conte is more pragmatic and more «a bit of both». Both good at keeping possession and defending deep. Maybe that is why they are not as appreciated by quite a few fans.

I think by similar he means he’s a pu€€y. We and ETH won’t be successful without an aggressive CB in this league. Torres wouldn’t work mate. Rudiger yeah someone like him.

Agree 100% with this.

Which defender is generally better than which is a slightly flawed way of assessing options, because you're not playing your defenders in a general way. You are (or should be) playing them in a specific system that emphasises certain qualities more than others. So you cut your cloth according to your measure.

If the way you play emphasises keeping possession as your first line of defence and places a premium on your CBs passing and carrying the ball, someone like Pau Torres becomes an outstanding option. Put him in this City side and he would look one of the best defenders in the league and the fact that he's less robust than someone like Rudiger wouldn't matter in the slightest. But in other set-ups, it would matter far more.

From what I've read about ETH, the ability for CBs to make line-breaking passes is extremely important in his system, so a heavy emphasis is placed on ability on the ball. So much so that I think I'm right in saying his starting CB duo are both relatively short at under 5ft 10? So it's probably safe to say the profile of CB we'd look for under him would skew towards technique rather than physicality more so than it would under other some other managers.

Mate but come on. I’m sure he’s a smart man he has to get profiles that also match this league. Pep’s City are still very physical. It’s important in this league. You can’t have two short CB. We have Varane anyway but you know what I mean.

ETH philosophy will be the same but I’m sure his profile of players will match this league. If we are ran right the club should help him out on this. Which is where Ralf’s 6 months at the club should come in. G.Nev made it sound like Fletcher would be making the recommendations.

Dias and Laporte is not more physical than Lindelof. Lindelof engages in more duels than the two of them. You could argue that it is due to less possession, but then again, that is the point!

Lindelof also has a higher win percentage than both of them this season, both in the air and on the ground.

Oh yeah don't get me wrong, I'm sure he'll upscale to the physicality of the league. It would be insane not to. We're not going to be playing two 5ft 9 CBs in the PL.

But relative to PL standards I'd still expect him to skew towards technique rather than physicality in the same way a side like City does, because the way he plays depends on doing so. You can see why in examples like the below. If your team regularly sets up to make line-breaking passes in that sort of shape then you desperately need elite level ball-playing ability at CB as you're one misplaced pass or dispossession away from getting absolutely murdered. It's high-risk stuff.

Sticking with Pau Torres as the example, I very much doubt he'd think the con of a relative lack of physicality from a 6ft 3 inch CB would outweigh the pros he'd offer in that sort of system.

Not saying he'd specifically be a target mind, he's just a good example of a CB who suits certain set-ups and not others, which is my general point. The CBs we need depend entirely on how we want to play, not how good they are compared to each other in general terms.

No he’s not more aggressive than them. Regardless what the stats say. He might be a better passer though.

Think this is a real sticking point with everything. It dictates everything - who we want to retain in the summer, who do we promote or ear mark for the first team and who do we target in the transfer market.

We really need to decide on this pretty quick and if we get someone with a good vision and philosophy of playing, I think we have enough talent knocking about the club to do quite well pretty quickly.

How much will coast Araujo? I realy dont think we will spend big money on defence while we are lacking of attacking options. Thats why I hope we are going for Rudiger and Mazraoui to strength in defence.

Rudiger will want astronomical wages and probably a signing on a fat signing on fee.

His contract expired next year so if he’s not going to sign a new contract then Barcelona would be forced to sell this summer. If I take a guess, it would be around 30m. Not a big money to add into budget to invest in young potential world class centre back in my opinion.

I haven't seen a lot of Torres, but the little I have seen of him, he doesn't look anything special. Kounde I agree looks the better player over all. But if I was to take a chance on a CB, then I'd go with 20 year old Josko Gvardiol, who is still very young but has the attributes both with and without the ball to play in a imposing play style.

His contract is up at the end of next season, suggestions seem to be in the region of €40m which seems decent.

Say what you want about slabbhead but 1 thing that he does right is passing the ball from the back.

You can say anything about him : "He's slow", "he's a fridge", "We can't play a high line with him" and you probably will be right on all of those claims

But the 1 thing he's really good at that no other CB in that squad is doing that good is passing the ball from the back and push the ball forward so he basically completing the role of the DM that we don't have right now.

If Araujo Can be that type of CB I'll be happy.

Both Varane and Lindelof are good at playing the ball forward.

Dead on. If it's anyone but ETH, I think we should go for Araujo, but if it's ETH I'd say Varane is one CB, Lindelof is a key player, Maguire leaves (if not this year then in January or after one year) and we sign someone like Kounde, Gvardiol, Timber or Guehi. Also Shaw maybe becomes an LCB if he wants to play 3 at the back like he does with Blind.

Romero also mentions Arsenal having a 6m proposal for Araujo. And Liverpool having a 6m proposal for Gavi.
