I know this is a field day for opposition fans but this is not the usual transfer ban etc. This is setting a dangerous precedent that football clubs can be sanctioned based on geopolitics.

It would have been perfectly fine for Roman to be sanctioned but sanctioning the club not only effects Chelsea fans and Chelsea employees but really the integrity of the league itself.

Think about it. If there are news reports in the future about human rights abuse in the middle east, there will be calls in the UK Parliament to sanction City, new Castle and Everton.

No club can be safe. And this will eventually spell disaster for the premier league.
Good.

You actually believe Roman?

He profited on knowing Russia was planning on invading Ukraine. This is a man that gives absolutely zero and I mean ZERO fecks about Ukraine, it's all PR. All he gives a shit about is money and making more money. Ignore the rainbows farting out of the guys mouth, he could very well have pocketed all of the money and ran back to Russia. At least this way the Government are taking action and by taking Chelsea away (valued at 3.2 billion dollars) that's 25% of his worth. Now I imagine if Russia decided to take 25% of your savings you'd be fecking pissed. I imagine he and Putin will be pissed, objective complete. Now if the Government truly did give a shit about Ukraine, they would take a decent percentage of the future sale of Chelsea and allocate that to the refugees of Ukraine. You'd hope that would happen, but it's the Tories so feck knows.

It's a shame that the community, players and employees will suffer a little bit of frustration at this time. But it could be worse, they could be stuck in Mariupol. Some perspective is needed right now.
Sanctions are to stop him giving the money to prolong the conflict.

I feel sorry for the club, the employees, the fans and even the owner as he has no control on Putin either.
My initial reaction was that seemed harsh on Chelsea. But they've only won the lot over the last 20 years due to a blank chequebook from Roman so they were incredible lucky with that anyway.

Have to say it's a bit ironic that English fans of other clubs are feeling Chelsea should be punished because of Romans money.

Where do you think UKs money came from. Eh? Need a history lesson on colonization.

By this measure, the UK should have relegated itself to how it was before the colonial era after the 50s when the likes of India got independent. This logic is cynical.

Colonization while deplorable doesn't necissate you ignore the effort put in by ordinary people. The scientists, engineers who's ingenuity helped the world and the UK through industrial revolution.

It is precisely because of this reasons UK citizens shouldn't be held responsible and are not punishable for a colonial past.

Punish Roman by all accounts but the club is more than that. Do you think the club you support is defined by your owner?

Absolving the UK, but to find Chelsea punishable because of an owner and who's money were perfectly acceptable to the UK government when the sale was made 19 years ago is hypocritical. Especially coming from English fans.

Whether they needed to be privatised or not is a matter opinion, not fact, but whichever way you dress it up, small handful of businessmen were able to hoover up assets and become multibillionaires. Abramovich may well be a very astute businessman but even his most ardent champions can't deny he has a few skeletons in his closet.
Boris Johnson thinking he's Churchill on the world stage will always piss me, particularly when Russian influence helped sway Brexit, which was a big event in him becoming leader.
Bill gates stole the windows design from IBM, and was generally considered ruthless and underhanded. You can name off a litany of super rich people who are not necessarily “nice” or even generally “good”.
The privatization being necessary is a matter of opinion. But it being legal, organized, and sanctioned by the Western powers is a matter of fact. Roman is worth 13 billion, but that could easily have been 70 to 80 billion with little extra effort … except that he was forced to sell back to the “state” when a Soviet obsessed munchkin named Vladimir Putin demanded it.
That doesn’t make Roman a supporter of Putin and the invasion or a criminal.Boris basically admitted that he had no proof or intelligence showing either when he made his statement to that effect. It just begs the question: are his only crimes being ethnically Russian and being rich? If so, they need to come out and say that, and own it.

I've had my own criticisms of the UK government and it's motivations in here, but because something was acceptable 19 years ago, it doesn't mean it should be forever. Chelsea being punished is obviously a secondary effect of them going after 'Roman', but Chelsea left themselves open to this when they welcomed 'Roman' and his dodgy money in.

Trying to compare the situation with 'Roman' and Chelsea and Britain's colonial past is ridiculous. So do we just write everything in the past off? How long do we give it? One year, 19 years for 'Roman'? The fact someone has evaded justice for years does not absolve their guilt.

Everytime I pop into this thread I see something stupid being said by a “Chelsea fan” who I’ve never seen on here before.

No one is championing Roman in this. He needs to be sanctioned.

But to sanction the club for welcoming Roman as you say is a bit much.

The club or its fans had no say in bringing Roman, the same way United fans did not have much say in bringing Glazers. The government could have simply kept a rule that Roman cannot exchange any money with us anymore thereby ensuring he cannot profit from the club. It could have leveled the playing field as you say too.

Instead sanctioning us directly resulted in sponsors going away., reputational damage., curtailing us from extending player contracts., letting go of club staff impacting their livelihoods., don't you see how cynical this is?

The comparison is really to emphasize how you define culpability. Roman is culpable but stretching that to a Football club which is a community made up of tens of thousands of fans is a bit hypocritical. The same way UK citizens wouldn't be culpable for a colonial past.

That comparison was the quite possibly the most stupid piece of whataboutism I’ve ever heard, straight from the looney bin.

The Chelsea fans in here make you wanna throw up. You’ve gone from 0 Champions Leagues and 1 league title in 100 years, to 5 leagues and 2 Champions Leagues in less than 2 decades due to Roman’s money. If sanctions on Russia & Russians course a lil heartache now, well, you know you did a deal with the devil and you’ll still ultimately come out in a much better place than a fecking Ken Bates world. You’ll still be one of the biggest clubs on the planet, with huge pull beyond anything a Chelsea fan in the 90’s could’ve dreamed of. You fecking cry babies.

These sanctions are for the greater good, to put incredible pressure on Putin and the Russian government to stop the madness in Ukraine, to prevent chemical warfare etc.

Yeah of course it would be nice if the government actually clamped down tax evaders, including corporates, with the same cynical gusto that they're showing in their pursuit of Russian wealth and people like your mate 'Roman'. Much as a I find the government's actions two-faced and their posturing contemptible, I can't muster pity for the likes of 'Roman'.

I agree completely and genuinely feel sorry for the fans. A really good mate is a lifelong Chelsea season ticketholder and it's really shit for the likes of him.

It's on the previous owners and premier league, basically. You can guarantee at the time a massive percentage of every club's fans were hugely jealous when Chelsea had that amazing first summer under Mourinho buying a who's who of players. There's definitely loads of hypocrisy around this whole thing.

You could argue that the sanctity of the league has been massively affected by people like Abramovich. Fans now expect owners to pump money into a club, for a club to operate massively outside its financial means. Fans even get angry when that not how a club operates.

Why do you feel sorry for him? The past 15 or so years have been a wet dream for any Chelsea fan and they are a bonafide super club now, sanctions or not, they will be in a miles better position than they were with fexking Ken Bates.

So, if the Oligarchs' money is deemed to be dirty (blood-money) will this be now used for Ukrainian people? I would hope this would be the case. However, my concern is it will be kept by the governments or stay in banks much like the assets of other countries such as Iraq, Syria, Lybia and Afghanistan. The simple equation is If it's dirty money it belongs to the country of its origin and should be sent back to help the country and its people.

After having some time to digest what happened., from the UK government's perspective ....these may have been the considerations.

  1. If the UK government has evidence for Roman's culpability, (even if the evidence is purely circumstantial) he had to be sanctioned. Anything less and the government would be heavily criticized.
  2. Roman is clearly the low hanging fruit and possibly the easiest target as he's both high profile but not as much that Putin and Russia would see this as a provocation.
  3. Roman was expecting to be sanctioned but not this quickly. Because he was expecting the club to be sanctioned as well, he put the club on sale.

  1. A ton of fans hate us anyway. So this would actually be a very popular decision.
  2. But if the sanctions had stopped the club from competing altogether, this could spell a disaster for the PL. It also sets a precedent that city, new castle etc can be potentially stopped from competing too in the future making PL very unstable.
  3. This may even make the decision unpopular too. Rival fans with a modicum of common sense would have viewed the punishment too harsh not to mention the backlash from Chelsea fans.
  4. Not to mention the court cases and suits the government may end up facing from the club.
You're fundamentally misunderstanding why Roman has been sanctioned. It isn't to do with geopolitical or business morals. It's because he's connected to a regime that is currently invading a democratic European country. Russia is posing a serious threat to western stability so in return the west is using the levers of power available to it as a counter attack.

If you want to argue that legally the sanctions will be unenforceable ultimately it isn't really about that either. It's about putting pressure on Putin and the Russian regime. If rich and powerful Russians like Abramovich start to feel their lives becoming uncomfortable, their wealth and status becoming threatened then this may grow opposition to Putin among those that may be able to influence his deposing. There's also evidence that Abramovich is directly involved in the supply of materials, namely steel, for this invasion and lots of speculation about his deep integration into Putin's regime.

Lets not forget that Abramovich lost his right to live in the UK in 2018 after Russia used a chemical weapon on British soil that killed British citizens. These are not triffling matters in terms of our own security.

In theory the likes of the UAE (City) and Saudi Arabia (Newcastle) could suffer the same fate. It wouldn't be contingent on any moral test, however. It would be contingent on them making geopolitical maneuvers that seriously draw the ire of western nations like the US and UK. You never know what can happen but that doesn't seem all that likely considering how they've been positioning themselves in the current world order.

My best friend is a Chelsea fan, I used to be a regular with him in the shed end years ago when we both lived near London.
I don't feel sorry for him at all. They won the lottery, brought their way into winning with a dodgy as hell owner who pumped in nearly £2b, and became arrogant.

The fans were chanting his name during a minutes respect for Ukraine, majority of the fans deserve this in my opinion.

You dance with the devil, you'll eventually get burnt.

It’s funny to hear your fans discuss precedents & integrity when your club has been operating with a £1.5bil loan they don’t have to repay then shouting from the rooftops you’re self sustained.

The moment they allowed an oligarch to purchase a club, inflate the transfer market, then wrote off all the money he used to do so spelt disaster for 80+ other clubs in the football leagues. Don’t say this happening 19 years later will be the issue.

They’re about to have the government wipe off 1.5b of debt, debt that would see every other club sanctioned over that alone. I think they’re getting away with enough here

Putin cares about nothing but himself, that aint the point of these sanctions which are designed to put enormous pressure on the richest of the rich in Russia, which in turn puts huge pressure on Putin and his government.

This is a mental way of saying "please don't take our money away, other people have stole in the past also".

No one think's Chelsea fans should be punished and it's a shame it's affecting Chelsea but guess what? Your owner is compliant in a war that's taking place in Europe so it's tough shit.

And I dislike the UK government so much I moved to Sweden. Chelsea fans singing the owners name at games is embarrassing and brings nothing but shame on your club, you should worry about that to be honest.

The government should auction off Chelsea prior to next season. All proceeds from the sale plus the 1.5 billion in the trust fund should be used for the victims of the war. This way justice is seen to be done and Chelsea and its new owners can begin a new chapter with a clean slate.

This was not a majority of fans, it was condemned by Tuchel, the club and Chelsea supporters groups. Damning all Chelsea fans on that basis is unfair.

One can only hope that politics starts to find a sense of a moral compass in the future and there's less deals done with odious regimes for massive influxes of corrupt cash. In regards to football, I hope all those owners start to question whether this is actually worth it. Sports washing works until it doesn't anymore, that should worry a few of them.

It’s actually the perfect opportunity for the government to test a 51% fan ownership model.

Totally agree. Its utterly appalling Chelsea ate being actively punished like they directly sponsored and participated in the Ukraninan invasion. Its even worse to see other fans support this ridiculousness. Yet in the future it could be your club put on the line in such a thoughtless manner. All to score cheap geo political points.

The difference being the U.K. doesn’t own a football club. Roman does. Roman used wealth he stole from the Russian people to buy the football club.

Although logistically difficult to do, Chelsea should be returned to the status it was before he bought them. There will be very little sympathy from anyone for Chelsea’s plight right now.

Absolutely agree with this, the government should seize Chelsea as an asset and sell it, in that way at least there are no sanctions on the club such as no tickets being sold etc and Ambramovich loses out on about 3 billion quid. It may also put off super rich people closely allied to various dodgy regimes from investing in this country. Sadly a lot of those people donate to the Conservative Party.

It does feel quite pathetic and embarrassing doesn’t it? Some of the excuses and whataboutism being regurgitated by our Chelsea bunch. I do almost feel sorry for them you know.
