I have to give Ten Haag credit, he’s taken on one of the riskiest jobs in football and risked his reputation with this bunch of wasters we have playing for us.

I just hope he along with Ralf can do a proper clear out and proper rebuild.

I'm not expecting miracles but it’s exciting getting him on board.

So people want McLaren in on here but didn't want Mike Phelan/accused the club of 'mates FC' for every coach choice recently?

Some strange takes.

I don't know as much about McClaren's role and the respect he had when he was Utd assistant but I know all the players speak extremely highly of Rene Meulensteen and his influence as a coach. I'd be very happy for Rene to come in also but the main point is that he didn't exactly excel as a manager either so it's not the be-all end-all. Considering McClaren and ETH's prior relationship he seems like a natural choice for some sort of coaching role at least.

Delighted it's finally done.

Now the club needs to give him what he needs to be a sucess, roll on next season.

Exciting times

Why does the club not want Mclaren?
I suppose he's seen as someone who represents old football from a bygone era - other than a short, disastrous stint at Newcastle, he hasn't actually been involved in Premier League football for more than 15 years. He's also a figure of ridicule for some, (largely based on a single interview). Ultimately, though, we should give Ten Hag the staff he wants, whoever they may be - we need to support him fully.

Happy with the appointment. To make this project succesful, the owners, the board and the players need to buy into his ideas and back him. However, the way our club is run the last couple of years, there is a high probability he won't make it.

Good for you guys. Looking in from the outside, this is the first time in a very long while that I have the feeling things are going up for you.

Delighted we have him, he is easily the only manager out there that has that Pep/Klopp level of potential to build a winning machine going forwards. Sure there are Mourinho-esque managers that we could go and try to grab some quick wins with, but he will be here to really build something if the structural changes allow him.

The timing of announcing it to try to lift the mood is sickening and points to it being yet another social media driven decision, and that makes me question if he really will be allowed to operate how he wants. But at least getting it done early means that he can have input immediately on what players he wants the board to keep hold of, and which ones shouldn't be given a contract extension under any circumstances.

Exciting.....we will see

McLaren and Ten Hag have worked together so if he wants him he should get him.

Can't undermine his first decision

Personally I didn’t have an issue with those being hired, nor the concept of bringing in McLaren.

It’s the people clamouring for van Persie after those raising the same complaints that I’m baffled by

Yeah, and that also!

I have no issue with McLaren nor RVP, both would be welcome additions.

If there is one single thing that I want Erik ten Hag to be, then that one thing is this:
I want him to be RUTHLESS

We have seen what happens when you give the modern footballer an inch, my word they take a mile.

If you're reading the forum Erik, then please bring an iron fist with you!

McClaren was highly rated back then but also a bit overrated. He joined in the Treble season only in December when the job was already half done.
His time as England manager was a disaster. Also don’t know when he last did something impressive.
But if ETH still wants him he will have his reasons and we should not stand in the way.

United minus the Glazers
If you look at the Ole thread when he was first appointed as permanent manager, the reactions from most posters here were eerily similar. Expectedly so as we are on a 14 game winning streak.

But I’m containing my excitement this time until I see a few positive results and promising incoming transfers.

Understood, and it makes perfect sense, but was that not the same with Phelan, Carrick et al with Ole, can't undermine the managers decision as to coaching staff?
Yet no one gave Ole a free run on that one.

But nevermind, I'm just happy we have a manager with a clear and concise vision as to how football should be played.

Finally we have our own Pep Guardiola is my idol.

Glazers have to give in to any demands after that Liverpool loss.

You mean when Fergie took over?

We had plenty of 7 or 8/10 players, some peak/coming to end of careers (Moran, Albiston, Stapleton) some starting (Whiteside) plus McGrath and Robson.

I'd take pretty much any of that first XI over this lot, partly for ability but mainly for attitude.

That said, the club was a mess and needed someone to lay plans down. Took Fergie years as he had to clear the bits/players out that he didn't want and start to improve it. You don't do that in one season.. when it clicked, we were a winning machine.

Despite all our money, all our sponsors, all our worldwide fame, we've been left behind in how a modern club should be run and the various parts interact. If the board/senior positions truly sort that out and Ten Hag can get the support he needs, we'll be back. Probably take a bit but that's ok as long as we have a clear plan and making progress each season.
We were in such a bad shape that Ferguson stated to the board he needed time to rebuild the entire club from the ground up.

We were in such a shape that the best manager in history were in the relegation zone and twice ended on the bottom half of the table with the players you mention.

You mention attitude, when half the players then had disastrous attitude to alcohol, rehabilitation and fitness building.

There were big talents in the squad, yet they’d never been as high up the table as Solskjær got this lot only last season. Ferguson dispatched players like McGrath, Strachan and Whiteside despite their talents. Whiteside was unlucky with injuries but also unprofessional in his rehabilitation. McGrath was an alcoholic, and Strachan had too much of an ego for Fergusons taste. Regardless, they were in a state that made Ferguson rather spend six years rebuilding than try to reform this talented lot.

Roughly translated:
"McClaren is no good when he is in the hot seat, however he is OK when he is an assistant manager".

Mclaren is being brought in as an assistant manager!

Maybe others see it differently, but I personally didn't have any issue with Phelan, Carrick or McKenna being in the coaching team until I saw evidence that they weren't doing their job well enough. Carrick was the only one without any experience really. McKenna had proven himself with the youth team and he's gone on to do a decent job post-Utd. Phelan obviously had worked alonside SAF for a long time even if he was never really the one guiding our tactics. I personally always expect a new manager to bring staff with them. They need people who already understand their methods to help make the transition easier. RVP would be more of a risk imo because he's so new to coaching and as far as I'm aware he hasn't actually worked with ETH before so he would also need to learn ETH's methods from the start.

It may have something to do with the fact that Ten Hag is coming with a brilliant reputation from Ajax while Ole was/is a nobody managing wise.

Don't know, just my guess.

probably winning the league with Twente. Ten Hag was his assistant for his first season there.

Moyes was right to go on holiday and Ten Hag would be sensible to have a break too. He can’t just lock his office in Amsterdam and start in his new one in Manchester the next day. He needs to have a break.
Ten Hag is going to be coming in fully aware of what he’s going to be confronted with in terms of playing staff and supporting structure.
Moyes was apparently shocked by how ramshackle United was behind the scenes. The complete lack of a transitional process was hardly his fault. Maybe if he’d started earlier and realised what was confronting him he would've been less inclined to clear out all the backroom staff?

I have enormous love for that Atkinson side and they had more heart and entertainment than this lot, but they were on the slide and the club was a mess in most departments.

We have so few players who have the talent to play Ten Hags type of football. We are going to have to change a lot of players.
