Yes. He tried to reinforce midfield & defence also.

His main target was Amadou Haidara, who we were heavily linked with, but would have been quite expensive (£30m). He also recommended Zakaria, an energetic defensive mid who went to Juve for peanuts (£3.7million) in January. Apparently our scouts turned him down, citing that he wasn't good enough. He's recommended Laimer for the summer apparently also. He's available cheap (£24m). He has a good relationship with Rangnick, and he's now the Austria NT coach too.

He also recommended the young CB Max Kilman from Wolves. He's tall, quick, and good on the ball. He was/is keen on him as a Maguire upgrade for the near future.
Further on to this, The Mirror is not exactly known as a bastion of journalistic integrity. I remember the Zakaria links, but it was more rumors than anything else. Do you have the reports on Haidara? If I remember correctly, that was some journalist making an inference that due to Ralf’s connections with RB, we were looking at him, not a source saying we wanted him. The other two links are from late April, and are suggesting this summer, not the past January window…

Yeah apologies, I didn't want the page being cluttered by a bunch of links. You can find tons on Haidara. Just type Haidara Rangnick in google.
I was so disappointed we didn’t bring in anyone in January with the CL spot up for grabs. Was hoping for a DM.

Why does he keep referring to Liverpool and City so much? Yes, we get it. We are shit and they are amazing.

Ralf Rangnick.

The Athletic made claims that Rangnick would have 'strongly advocated a move for Haidara' in Jan, and the Leipzig CEO that i linked above made similar claims.

I found this the most interesting though:
A banner unfurled in the away end read: “Broken and rotten from top to bottom” — some farewell message to Ed Woodward.

Even though he is departing, the issues that have plagued United for years are still present. There is corporate compliance within the club over signings and therefore drift when it comes to pursuits. United view January as a difficult month to complete deals and that sets the tone for negotiations. As stands, there are no advanced talks with any new players.

United solidify summer targets around this time of year in case some become available now, “although that’s a low probability,” said a high-level source. Fernandes fell into that category in 2020, Woodward nevertheless requiring the entire window to agree a deal with Sporting Lisbon.

Sources say Rangnick has expressed a wish for January reinforcements, particularly in midfield. The Athletic understands he would advocate the pursuit of Amadou Haidara, the RB Leipzig player who scored against United last season. The 23-year-old is currently at the Africa Cup of Nations with Mali.

Denis Zakaria, Borussia Monchengladbach’s Switzerland international, has not convinced club scouts of his long-term suitability even if his transfer value is reduced due to his contract expiring in June. The 25-year-old’s form has suffered since sustaining a lengthy injury in 2020.

Jude Bellingham tops United’s list for midfield, with West Ham’s Declan Rice also ranking highly, and those are deals that could only happen in the summer. But the inertia that currently permeates United’s transfer strategy, including outgoings as well as incomings, is at odds with the trajectory of the side.
It basically confirms what we've long thought. That any move was going to be almost impossible for us in January. I don't think we actually had any moves lined up at all, which seems like negligence when you consider the free-fall we were in, and how our season could have changed with a couple additions.

This link here says Rangnick was also interested in Ruben Neves alongside Kilman in January. I initially forgot, but there have also been links with DM Boubacar Kamara. He's a free agent in the summer. But according to Romano, we turned down the option to sign Kamara for £10m in January.

The Laimer links are more for the summer you're right. Another one we've been strongly linked to for the summer is CB Dan-Axel Zagadou. Rangnick tried to sign him for RB Leipzig back in 2017.

Because they are the epitome of well run clubs at the moment, as much as we all may hate it. If we copied their method of operation we'd be up there with them, so no wonder he mentions them as someone who is reknown for being Director of Football and such, he's thinking in that kind of way.

So many in this thread are giving Ralf credit for “telling it like it is”. We’ve known that there has been poor leadership of the club since SAF left… how is this news?
Yes we all knew, and we all bitched and moaned about it. Fans around the world talk about it. You think ManUtd were listening? No, they couldn't give a flying kyte.
Then Ralf comes in, does pressers, says things and slowly but firmly our Divas gets seen for who and what they really are, keeps talking about the club what is wrong, what needs to be done, etc, and now everybody is listening, Media people are listening and talking, even G. Neville is not defending players anymore.
Now, ManUtd are listening as well. Finally.

He has been around for a long time. The things he has been saying, he would not be saying unless he has got the approval from someone higher up. Looks like both Murtough and Arnold are using him to bring change.
Exactly what I think. They're both new in their jobs and Ralf publicly stating the size of the restructuring ahead gives them more of a margin in the time afforded to them. If Ole was still here we'd be hearing how rosy everything is at the club so when we inevitably fail it would be put down to ineptitude instead of the real reason which was having people in positions of power that had no clue how to do their job. How people can't see the effect Ralf is having with his hammer approach is beyond me.[/QUOTE]

What does this thread and my comment have to do with Ole? Ffs I have just called out the club leadership.
You seem to be upset about a manager calling out the higher ups who’ve made repeated mistakes and then sacked the manager and talked about results not being good enough, all the while completely absolving themselves of any accountability. If they had it their way Ralf would just keep saying yes and take the blame for all the current issues at the club despite only being here a few months. He’s right to shift focus.

Those who are hating on Ragnick can cry from now till tomorrow. He has done everything right with his pressers. He is like black to white when compared with Ole. For years, so many people at this club chose to preserve the image of the board and the club administration while we continued to decay. For once, a manager is saying it as it is while on seat not years after he has left like Van Gaal. This is not a well run club. It is full of incompetent nobodies who don't want to be outed for their incompetence and people still have the effontery to criticise him when he exposes the rot. It speaks more of how you probably love mediocrity than being honest and calling out rubbish when you see it.

What a fecking dishonest clown Ralf is. Yes Ralf deals for those types of players could have been done in 48hrs  All 3 of those deals were completed right at the end of January despite negotiations going on between clubs for some time.

Two more games until we no longer have to hear his self serving drivel.

For a football professor, he's pretty dull. Today would've been a good opportunity to spring a tactical surprise to nullify Brighton.

Nope, exact same lineup as the last home game.

The players know he’s wanting to replace half the squad and they have given up on him.

it was an impossible job for him with this current crop of lazy as feck players

Adds nothing to the discussion
Eight months ago there would have been 5 threads created on Ole by now. But the Rangnites are happy because of his revelations exposing the board's dithering allegedly.

Just one more game before Wreck-It is kept as far away from that dugout as possible.

Another shite performance after which people will lap up his post match comments. Talking seems to be the only thing he excels at. Maybe he should pack in the football and start a podcast.

I can't say I rate him but he's in a pickle.

We all know Potter's style. He'll press us to death. Well, not only do we have no press resistant players to keep the ball and break their press, we have a lightweight front line. Bruno, Mata and Elanga are never going to hold the ball up.

The only other option is to promote some press resistant players from the academy, but do you want to throw Mejbri and Garnacho into this mess?

I understand few are desperate to shift a focus but truth is, RR failed hard and even if he failed 3 times as much, its still nothing compared to what Ole did to us with his rebuilding, not to mention fitness and overall football.

It's proved a pretty terrible appointment so far. Problem is that nobody cares and everyone is just seeing the season out. He's the very definition of lame duck. He's been poor but he's also been absolutely stitched up by what is probably the most average, poisonous gang of players I've seen at the club.
