So who DO we need right now then?

Please don't say Neves, Ruiz or Tielemans. They seem to be the go to guys for anyone who's saying walk away from de Jong
What we need right now is striker because we are very thin in that department.

Initial reports way back when we agreed the fee with Barca were around 320k p/w for him (which is around what we offered Pogba as well). I don't think we'll bear the brunt of Barca's errors. Barca and FdJ will reach some compromise and it'll hopefully be a fresh contract for us going forward.
Helpful. Thanks!

Screw this money and all. If ETH thinks he is the fulcrum of your midfield and can unlock the potential of all attacking players you got then go for it. If midfield not functional whoever you bring not worth.

Manager knew player s potential so nothing wrong to go for it despite spend few more millions.

Do you think there's a chance Chelsea are in for him?

Well the agents attempts at drumming up interest is falling on deaf ears, as i'm sure Bayern have ruled him out and Chelsea have more pressing matters to deal with rather than yet another midfielder to add to their bulging collection
Yeah I do agree it won't work as neither team want Frenkie but my point is that it would make zero sense for Barca to feed these rumors to Sport when a deal has already been agreed upon. Bayern certainly won't pay him the big wages he'd want and I have no doubt United could and probably will make him their top earner after Ronaldo.

He is definitely a star. Kante is, and Verratti.

See him play you see the quality. Eriksen has better assist but can‘t dribble like Frenkie.

The midfield is of a much higher priority right now, surely. We haven't had an upgrade in that area since before SAF retired, not an overly successful one anyway.

Also, going into the new season with McFred as our go-to midfield pairing will legit cause a Caf meltdown the likes of which we've never seen before. Lives will be lost.

No shock that they’re back from tour and this has started to heat up again. This will be done very soon

And ignore midfield? Scary thinking. Both desperately need upgrading.
Do we not also need the right structure around our striker?
Right now when have people in central midfield but when it comes to strikers we might not have any if Martial keeps being injuried and Ronaldo leaves. So I would put attention to that market and get one or maybe two. Sure, we can always put Fernandes as false 9 or put Rashford there but that is not the answer in my book.

I think Barca want it done before La Liga starts so they can get all their new guys registered and get the season up and running properly. Plus they'll want to get their remaining signings done too

So you'd be happy with a McFred midfield again for the upcoming season? Or will you be one of them that say yeah they'd be happy with that, but the moment they start playing like crap, you'll be on EtH's back saying he should have sorted midfield out?

Is it? We barely have any forwards/strikers. We might have problems with goals if Martial get injuried/keeps his form from previous season and Ronaldo leaves.

No. We have three great options for two positions in jorginho, kante and kovasic. Then Gallagher and Loftus cheek in reserves.

We need lot of other positions to upgrade. So not bothered about rumours we were in for him.

Loved Gallagher last season. Has he featured much in pre season for you?

So far, it is just Barca talking, De Jong and his camp are really staying quite and not making any comments at all.

Barca will blink and will make it happen by paying De Jong what he is owed.

De Jong is happiest if he stays, we all know that, but we also know that he will not leave without is deferred wages settled one way or another

They'll blink but probably won't pay him the entirety of the two year's worth of deferred wages. 7M payoff is a decent start, so let them haggle for a bit.

Yes but not much to talk about. He was played as no.8 against arsenal in back 4 formation. But we were totally over ran. He put in effort but not effective as total team were stalled.

Against udinese reserve he played okay as a 6 but still lot more to do to challenge those three for midfield place. But putting in efforts so will come good I hope.

My understanding is that he's owed 17m on top of his regular wages as that's the amount which was deferred. I can't see us paying it anyway.
I don't believe his regular wage was 450k though. That figure seems to be the wage he will receive from this season onwards in order to repay that 17m.
If 450k was his base wage they should be paying us to take him.

Might as well stop posting Sport updates at this point. Can't believe a single thing that they say. Graham Hunter said that paying his deferred wages was never an issue for Barcelona. But everything points to that being a lie too. Anyone close to the club is there to be used by them to push their narrative. The politics surrounding clubs with presidential elections is absolutely embarrassing.

I have a lot of respect for football history, and barca have a very rich one. But I have zero respect for the way that they're being run right now.

I think that train has left the station at this point. Their treatment of him, the manager’s treatment, his standing and position in the team etc.
I don’t think he’ll be happier to stay at all, maybe 2 months ago, but not now.

City don't really need him and have shown no interest in signing him so far.
They are a bit thin after so many outbounds and it would be a fantastic troll. You are right though, I was thinking Gundogan is wrong side of 30 but they did get Phillips now I think of it.

I would absolutely do it though. Quality player, fits style, ruin our plans, choosing CL/Pep over EL/ETH... When you have infinite resources that's the sort of petty stuff that is far too satisfying to miss out on.

I hope so. We desperately need a deep lying playmaker and a striker tbh. It’s going to hurt our season badly if not so 100% just needs to get over the line.

There isn’t another alternative to De Jong who can do what he does on the level he does. All the other alt targets will prove a costly stop-gap mistake I feel.

Our club seems to hate signing midfielders past 10 years. Avoiding deep lying playmakers like the plague after Carrick and Scholes left.

Same with CDM’s actually. Even rejected Kante when he was available and Tony Kroos

I don't think Kroos was ever interested in joining us ahead of Bayern/Real tbf. I think we didn't reject him so much as we knew we weren't going to get him from some point and as a result didn't bother.

So if our first choice and second choice strikers don’t perform, we’ll be short of depth? Brilliant. Might as well get another LB in if Shaw doesn’t perform, Malacia doesn’t adapt, and Telles remains Telles.

He pretty much said himself he was ready to join and things changed when the manager changed

That would make sense then. 450k now would be him being repaid the wages he missed over the pandemic.
