Might be that despite us having his old coach here, he simply sees Chelsea to be a safer bet. They're in a better situation compared to us, already an established team with a winning (not taking anything away from ETH) coach that's competing on all levels, whilst on the other side were just getting started from the scratch (again...) and there's no telling how things will turn out.
winning coach? Has less league titles as ETH.

He’s as winning as Di Matteo.

Honestly, I hope that happens but we have all seen how this club is run by a bunch of amateurs and this time its nothing new.
And if he doesn't join United, he's (a) still an utter snake and (b) United are still woefully incompetent.

You have a different view to this but I feel very strongly about it. You just don't string someone along like this for multiple months only to have your head turned by a club that finished below United 3 times in the last 5 seasons.

Thoughts on the fallout IF he doesn't sign?

It's more likely, IMO, he stays at Barca than moves anywhere else.
It depends how much Frenkie wants to reduce his salary, do you want to half your pay or get the same money elsewhere? If you are a player that's 25 coming into your prime, do you want to take a cut?

Me personally if I was a player between the ages of 25-29 I wouldn't want to earn less money dream club or not. The life after football you end up effectively in retirement unless you go into a high profile coaching job.

I think it's more of a negotiating tactic than an actual hard stance because we knew there were no other buyers. I don't know what has gotten into Chelsea and why they're chasing him now because even Chelsea fans didn't seriously think they'd be in for him a week or two ago.

If it comes to it, I think we'll pay up (80M to Barca + 17M to Frenkie over the duration of his contract thru sign-on fees etc.). 97M euros for Frenkie in a window where RM paid 80M for Tchouameni. It seems reasonable enough.

I'd love to see if Chelsea try to force Alonso / Azpi as part of this negotiation. I think they'll be in trouble if they do that because Barca still need money for Bernardo.
Yup i agree. I think now that Chelsea are involved, United will realise that they're either going to have to pay up to get their man, or risk losing out.

There is no way we'd be around if we weren't sure he wanted to come, now we have to prove just how much we want him. Chelsea won't match what we've offered Barca, and they won't match our wages i'd imagine, so in that respect we could say that we're still ahead, but we genuinely just don't know. I'm sure i read though that IF Chelsea were to get involved with de Jong, Azpi/Alonso would be seperate to any de Jong bid

If we don't get him, we don't. I like what EtH has reiterated again today, about signing the correct profile of player, rather than just a player.

Exactly, if you sign the wrong player over and over again, you end up in a "we still need 5-7 world class players" and those players won't want to come to you.

Convince the first one or two then it will get easier as you start stringing results together.

Moaners will feel validation and continue their moaning ways until the end of time. Muppets will plummet from the sky at terminal velocity clutching their Frenkie dolls, the screams of a thousand despairing souls will come forth to plague the earth and enrich the soil with hate as their vengeful swansong. Berbaclass will probably have a pot noodle and a wank as usual because his muppety is limitless and unwavering.

Agreed. It will be a bumpy road, however, in the long term, it should bear fruit.

The part about FDJ someone from behind the camera answered for him before he answered himself, which was interesting.

This reminds me of the Bruno transfer... United were dragging things a bit, Barcelona then opened talks to sign him and we had him wrapped up shortly after.

Why do we do crap like this? Why not just get it sorted asap to avoid drama?

Every time I see a 'things are happening' tweet I assume it'll be a repost of one from yesterday or 2 weeks ago or 2 months ago, and then do a double take when I see they're always current

He can easily be reporting on Barcelona's sales, which is another big topic among their fans. Not all of his reports are about United.
Oh i know, but theres only so much of "Things Are Happening" that a sane person can take haha

How bumpy though? I don’t think we become more attractive next summer after consecutive seasons out of CL and 10 years since our last title. Two things I’m 100% sure will happen.

I personally think it is too much of a risk and one that could backfire dramatically for EtH. We need signings regardless of whether they are FDJ or Antony. Let’s hope the remainder of the window is positive.
