Why isn't he splashing the cash for ronaldo then ? Surely 30m for ronaldo isn't much.
Tuchel probably doesn't want him and is very open to the idea of De Jong as a future midfield prospect. If we buy a striker you might see Chelsea sign Ronaldo even though United doesn't want him to go to a PL rival. Ronaldo could be a headache or a top supplementary striker, Tuchel could be talked into it eventually but it's a big if to be basing your team around him, he'll want too many minutes.

Chelsea certainly cementing their top 3 position and not afraid to spend to keep them up there which is bad news for us. I can see United missing out and us taking an old Chelsea midfielder instead.

While I was optimistic I'm not sure someone like Frenkie would want to go through a likely 2 years of Europa. Top 4 is very difficult here with the oil clubs presence and at least in the short term Chelsea will probably continue with Boehly. Pep Klopp Conte and Tuchel is pretty crowded already.

If Frenkie has been convinced to come I just hope he can hang in there with the project to break into the top 4 properly and we're not constantly hearing Bayern links.

Oh i know that, but they may have a crap season and finish 3rd, out of the CL in the group stages, crap cup run... then what? Aren't they relying on winning the lot with all they're doing?
Probably but as I said elsewhere, they always seem to fine a "loophole". If they had been like this 10ish years ago, we'd have won two more Champions Leagues

We can forget FDJ, he will either stay at Barcelona or join Chelsea. Out biggest mistake for the CM positions was not signing Boubacar Kamara for free (yes, 0m) and he is on wager that we probably are paying Tom Heaton or someone. He has been very good for Aston Villa this preseason and us, in such a need of CMs, not getting him no matter if would have signed FDJ also was such a bad decision, i can not think of one good reason we did not (according to media he was keen on joining us and was a fan of the club when he was young). But nevermind, we will once again go with a 4-2-3-1 with McFred occupying the 2 CM positions as it seems of today. Even though i have been cheering for playing Martinez as a CDM next to a real box-to-box, Fred was brilliant in that position in Shaktar, just look at the game he played for them in CL against City. But still I would not let Fred get the freedom to join the attack, because he is not got enough in final third area of the pitch so i would rather have them both being more of CDMs but Fred acting box to 80% of the offensive box (if it makes sense). It would be like having 2 pitbulls behind Bruno/Eriksen - Fred trying to win the ball and play easy passes while Martinez is an excellent passer and can both make passes cutting through the opponents midfield or lifting the ball over the defense from 30-40m.

Something like

..........................DDG
................Varane....Linelöf
....Dalot...............................Malacia
................Martinez
..................................Fred
.........................Bruno
Sancho.................................Rashford
........................Martial
Get the feck out

I think overall this saga has been pretty poor for us overall in terms of damaging our reputation plus failing to allow us to strengthen our squad, because our manager is hell bent on securing signature of De Jong only.

I fail to understand how in the world of million players or more, there is only a single player named De Jong who has certain attributes and there is nobody who could improve us. That is defying logic, specially as our midfield is our weakest area, everybody wanted at least two midfield signings one to replace Pogba and Another DM, so we would not have to rely on Mcfred any longer.

Fast forward three months we have signed a backup LB, another CB and a backup AM, who technically may replace Bruno. We have targeted areas where we are the strongest, whereas signed no one for RB, RW, CM & ST position where we are at the weakest. It has come to this stage where for the first match of the season, every team with new signings will be starting with the best lineup, whereas we already have Martial out, and we would be relying on Elanga (not good enough) or Ronaldo (not fit/wants to leave) or Garnacho (unproven).

On top of all this, it appears that De Jong wants to move to Chelsea or favors that move. What we should have done in the first place was to set a deadline like Dortmund with Sancho, if Barca sorts their wage issue by that date great, otherwise sign other targets and let Barca deal with their own mess. When will we start acting as a proper club, you see the likes of Madrid and Bayern let their top players go or force players out if they are either asking too much money or move to other targets if the club is asking for too much money.

Whereas we are strung along by smaller clubs and eventually end up paying over the top fees (Maguire, AWB, Martinez). All it has done is made our first match not only difficult to manage for our new manager, furthermore in case of a loss or a draw we may explode and end up paying stupid fees for average players and become a even bigger laughing stalk.

How does this damage our reputation? How does Barca refusing to pay him reflect poorly on us? Tell me how.

Barca are scum, Frenkie might want to come, Glazers aren't paying up. Basically sums up nearly 1300 pages.

If the Glazers are truly going to back ETH then just pay the boys owed wages, yes its a principle thing and yes Barca can do one but the impact of not having Frenkie vs having him is worth way more than that.

The Glazers have plenty of cash regardless of our performance last season so just pay up and lets see if Frenkie wants to come or not. That way everyone can move on one way or another and we can focus on hopefully securing other targets in other areas.

Because we are seen as a soft club, who could be strung along, plus who is to say that after few bad results we may panic and pay 17M Pounds from our own pocket. We have already increased our guaranteed add ons from 10M to 20M and increased the fixed fee to help Barca finance his deferred wage, which we should not have done and no other club does the same.

Our clubs reputation will be damaged for....trying to negotiate a good deal? I think we've played this one alright, of course if it ends in him going to Chelsea (which it won't), it's a woeful bit of management from everyone involved.

It's Barca that have come out of this looking just horrendous, not us, not yet anyway.

We should not pick up the tab of FdJ deferred wages. Our offer is already very generous. It may be Brokeloana is holding out for more but we should not give it to them. Sends the wrong message for future deals.

Or, the manager has been assured by his ex player that he will come here, as soon as the wage issue is resolved.
Doesn’t mean he’s hell bent, doesn’t mean he can’t find another player, just means he has his man, but knows it’s a waiting game. Just because fans like yourself piss your pants when a saga drags, doesn’t mean the manager and decision makers should piss there’s also.

And as for you calling two of the new players “back-ups”, well I call bullshit on at least one, and who knows, the left back looks superb so maybe it’s two. As for RW, it was our strongest position in pre-season, including the RB, amazing really considering it has completely taken over our left flank which has been our strongest for years.

We’ve agreed a deal with Barcelona. The player won’t talk to us formally because he is playing hardball to get his money owed by Barca. The most competent club in the world could agree with Barca and still would not talk to Frenkie because that’s his stance until he has agreed with Barca who are reluctant to pay him. Nobody is stringing us along, nobody is using us. We are being patient for one top target because Barca need him gone and will fold eventually. That doesn’t seem soft to me. We’ve made our position clear and are sticking to it.

There is a limit for trying to negotiate a good deal, we have already spent 3 months of transfer window on this negotiation, he favors Champions league club or staying in Barca, we are literally his last option, it has resulted in us being unsure of how much money will be left and consequently, we have not signed any RB, RW or ST until things are sorted with this deal.

You are mistaken. The deal was agreed ages ago - we’re not still negotiating anything. We wait for Frenkie and Barca to sort themselves out.
Also dunno about last option, I’m not convinced of the chelsea links I think we’re his only option.

Don’t think I remember a more disruptive transfer pursuit…..we’ve basically gone on hold with everything while we have patiently waited……and then wow - the season is starting in 2 days time and we’ve done nothing to resolve this positional weakness and then nothing to resolve our new striker problems.

I really hope that Erik is confident he can get a tune out of this team while we wait for reinforcements.

If Martinez and Erikson start I will be happy as that means we’ve bought players for the starting 11.

It is who replaces Martial though that all the discussion will be about against Brighton but the whole FDJ saga now is going to either make or destroy quite a few Utd employees careers.

We always talk like the football world is doing everything opposite to us. You say every other club is ready with their shiny new toys. We are playing Brighton who have lost their two best players and have needed a number9 for two years now. Can anyone confirm if they have fixed these issues?

There is still plenty of time to sort out our window and I’m sure we will have 3 new players minimum before it closes. Chelsea are in the same position as us but they still get talked of in a positive light.

Could be a message to Barcelona to say he's happy to sit on 400k a week and not moving until they sort everything out?
