James Robson. “Interested”. This really seems like a goer then.

Is there space for another midfield signing at PSG after Vitinha and Renato Sanches?
They've been playing 5-2-3 so far under Galtier as well. They already have Verratti, Vitinha, Paredes, Sanches, Danilo for the two midfield spots.

Would be an odd one.

His agent's trying to drum up some interest. PSG is just bloated in most departments. Talks of Sesko going to PSG too!

I don't know about that. United needed to search for bargains and act quick on the transfer market. Ruiz-Laimer would have been the perfect base for our midfield. I would have also signed Scamacca for upfront.
These bargains deals aren’t made for us :(

There was rumors of Paredes to Juve and Danilo isn't great.

Not a good source but I would take him as an upgrade on McTominay.

Awful source and most likely not true, but I'll take anything by this point. He is my number one alternative for De Jong and will cost less than half in fee and wages. Would be a great transfer, but we will absolutely need to sign a DM-type alongside him. Bennacer would be my pick. Alternatively Sangare or Caqueret.

Meh I was all giddy about some positive transfer news for our CM for once only to find out the guy might join PSG.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there was a quote from Ten Hag "we'll buy de Jong or develop someone internally for that role", but I can't find it now so maybe it was just the voices in my head. Again.
It was more along the lines of we’ll buy the right player given the chance but if not possible then we’ll look internally and try to develop one. It’s some of the press who’ve gone with de Jong or nothing. They might be right of course, but I’ve never seen Ten Hag explicitly state that publicly.

He's never said De Jong or nothing. People just interpreted his quote as that for some reason, maybe it gives them abit of closure. Ten Hag quite clearly stated we after the right players and if they are not available we will develop internally. So even if we don't get De Jong, it's still possible there's an alternative available that we consider to be the right player

Yep that was my reading of it too.

IIRC, Paredes, Danilo, Herera and Gueye, are on the chopping block.

They got Veratti, Vitinha, Sanchez, and probably a youngster in the mix, so they might want to bring in Ruiz if the aforementioned midfielders are shipped off.

They also want rid of Diallo, Kurzawa, Kehrer, Draxler, and Icardi, ADM and Wjinaldom have left already.

you are interpreting his words just as much as us "FDJ or Bust" folks. I admit "FDJ or Bust" is an interpretation. However, considering how quickly we have (allegedly) moved on from multiple players this window once they were ruled out and yet we keep going for FDJ no matter what is tweeted, I tend to lean on ETH not going out there and spending 80m on Neves on deadline day or a similar situation for Ruiz on deadline day.

I'm happy to be proven wrong, but the way I see things atm, FDJ is going to deadline day and if that doesn't happen, then it's squad development.

I'm waiting to see what happens before Barca's first game. If De Jong deal is still on standstill by then, then I can definitely see this dragging to deadline day and in that case we may not have enough time for an alternative if we don't get De Jong. Ten Hag does seem willing to risk the possibility of this happening as De Jong is the overwhelming first choice

Can he play combination football? There isn’t even a 2-touch sequence in the vid on first page, which is extremely odd for a lengthy vid of a midfielder.

That graphic also states he loses the ball a lot on unforced errors, which isn’t a good sign - does that mean he’s errant with his passing or that he’s got deep-playmaking traits and expectations placed upon him?

Going to PSG would not be his best move. Too much competition, he would be on the bench most games

If you read the first two pages, nobody seems to be able to agree on anything about Ruiz. I only know that he looks like the lankier Spanish James Maddison.

Yeah, I’ve read through this thread and the bumped one in the FF - seems nobody has agreed about him since he was mentioned on the site in 2021!

For these two positions they essentially have Verratti, Sanches, Vitinha, Paredes, Gueye, Herrera, Danilo, Rafinha, Dina Ebimbe, Zaire Emery and likely Draxler.

It's the equivalent of a matchday thread! '

Nobody can agree, he is one of one. It's a large player, that is mainly a passer but not really a deep lying playmaker despite the fact that he is a disctintly average dribbler and not particularly physical.

Seems clear to me that ETH prioritises a ball player in the 6 position over defensive strength, so this link makes sense.

I don't think we've ever had that type of player/role at United before so it's an exciting prospect. We've had creative players like Veron, Scholes, Pogba but they've always been paired with at least one more defensive minded midfielder. Carrick and Matic were DMs who could play, but much stronger defensively and not as creative as the kind of 6 I think ETH is aiming for.

Short term, ie this season, I suspect the plan is to have Ruiz or De Jong starting deep, with Fred in front bustling about. Inverted full backs to help pack the middle of the pitch. Longer term, ie next season, it'd be interesting what kind of midfielder ETH would go for.

I don't think he has the positional discipline or intelligence of de Jong, but he's a better distributor. I think he could work well alongside a more robust player like Fred or Mctominay, so I understand the links, but I don't think he'd fit the long term vision.

Finding a half back type that's press resistant and can screen well defensively is really tough. It's no coincidence that Liverpool sucked when Fabinho was playing centre back, or that City spent big on Rodri at a time when Fernandinho was at the top of his game. They're hard to find.
