I've always liked the player. The person/baggage side is a bit much though.

EtH has talked in the past about working with such personalities and he seems to thrive off of it though. Would be an interesting move for the right price.

He isn't a defensive midfielder either is he?

Why don't the club seem to want to address the position that needs addressing the most?
He is a defensive midfielder and pretty good one that used to want to play as a box to box, where he is in my opinion limited.

There's an agents rumour going around (low level currently) that it's Ronaldo as a swap deal for Rabiot. I don't know if that makes the deal more palatable for some people.

RabIot DM we have wanted for years. Much better than McFred which is what we need improvements.

Do you know if he's happy to play the deeper role by now? Or does he himself still prefer to play as #8?

I have no idea but if I was a coach it would be the first and potentially last question that I ask him.

At times, you wonder whether there even is a new regime in place. Off the pitch, Rabiot worries me and you'd wonder why we're investing in him rather than going younger. Even if we were to go for a stop-gap, someone like Florian Grillitsch would make more sense as he'd be a free transfer plus wouldn't come with the same baggage issues

If any club can deal with moody frenchmen/women its us.

Just get him the feck in for 15m.

Then hopefully Frenkie by the end of the month. I'd be happy with that and fighting hard for 4th.

Im so sick of Fred and Mctominay. Its been YEARS now and both are still at the club. In fact both have taken on even MORE prominent roles considering everyone else has left. Its absolutely shocking the state of our midfield.
4th yeah that’s not happening this year 7th to 8th at best, and we need to give ETH all our support because he’s been let down more than any other united manager recently so he needs time we will struggle to be 7th this year and that’s ok because if we make a huge effort in Europa League we can salvage the season. More importantly we replace 5 or 6 players in starting 11 that are and have been never fit to wear the shirt.

I agree. We need to eventually add excellence otherwise this being our level will be standard fair. But I guess it depends, if we add Rabiot to eventually replace someone like a Mctominay then I wouldn't worry as we'd be I the market for more Cms and who wouldn't be an improvement over him.

Ideally we sign two CMs who I can say are THE ones who fix our midfield for the next decade. But if that can't happen, we really need some change given the state of our midfield.
People sometimes offered a false alternative though, as if it's either barrel scraping or de jong/world class player from top club. Look at the players who have dominated midfields or been part of succesful midfields in the premier league in recent years. I'm not saying we should have signed them, but surely we can sign their modern day equivalent, these are all players who moved from a 'smaller' club, with a huge contract on offer too.

Rodri, Fernandinho, Kante, Jorginho, Fabinho, Thiago, Gundogan....you can go on and on. Obviously it's part player and part the system they join, but there is simply NO EXCUSE for a club the size of man united to be giving up around 40 games a year to Scott McTominay. It's incomprehensible when you step back from it. Christ, we let Brighton beat us to the guy who dominated us for the second time in a few months.

There is just no chance Mctominay would even be close to our radar if we hadn't brought him through academy. Fred has shown glimpses of real talent too but any other top club just moves on and improves. This is his FIFTH season! 150+ games and what, we think he's just going to come good?

It actually hurts my head to think about, and that's before we look at right back, our terrible terrible strikers, and our decade long neglect of right wing.

Romano saying even Rabiot would be unsure about joining us without CL football. Haha.

Could you imagine the excuses that would be made if we did actually have CL football to offer…don’t like the weather, don’t like the city etc.

Why can’t someone just have the balls to say they think we are shit.

Anyone turning their nose up at this after watching those 2 clowns in midfield yesterday, needs their heads checked. I dont care what 'baggage' he is/has.... He walks into our team and improves it

We were also told by some reporters that Eriksen was a De Jong alternative, remember.

And that's where Rabiot as a target is a bit of an issue. His strengths are in a domain that is not as rare as De Jong's, there is likely a dozen of defensively sound, relatively cheap, currently available and younger players.

So do countless other players. Ones that don't come with the same amount of baggage.

Trouble is panic signings like this are never as short term as we wish. They hang around for years on big wages, we're unable to sell, and hence we become more reluctant to buy again
Agreed - We could be moving into a new era where there are shorter contracts - look at Lingard - small deals but larger signing on fee - that way there is an out for both sides if need be……

Creativity is the key now……not a 5 + 1 year contract

A crybaby with his mother as his agent on one side and EtH who asked players to come to him with their issues and not to their agents on the other.

Bound to end well.
