No, this is not a wind up thread, I think this is an interesting benchmark against a club that is rapidly improving.

Interested to hear views on this.

I'm less sure - Newcastle were top 4 for the second half of last season. That's more than just a blip or a good run and Howe is doing really good things up there.

They need a signing or two to boost their attack, and maybe one more midfielder, but they look a more cohesive team than us at the moment. It depends on how long it takes Ten Hag to either turn around the attitude and application of half our first team, or else drop them for younger players who are willing and able to follow instructions.

I wouldn't say it's a given that we will finish above them right now at all.

Yes, you have far better players. They still have more players in their squad that were battling relegation than not. They'll likely get top 10 this season but they're far from being a EL side yet. They have been on an excellent run but the bubble will burst.

I don't think we will.

They are on a bounce, have a good manager, players are in form, the fans are loving it. They have great owners that care about the club. Basically the exact opposite to us in everyway.

Yes,

They'll finish bottom and we'll finish 19th.

The main question is who goes down with us 2?

The better question is if we'll nail down a secure top four spot by the time Newcastle get good.

I'm not confident at all. They've had better results over a long period of time now and there is not that much between the best XIs.

Not important, this season is all about building for the future. As long as we don’t get relegated it doesn’t matter where we finish as long as the football improves. That’s the reality unfortunately for this season.

They got 14 more points than us in the second half of last season so I don’t think this is a ridiculous question
It is a ridiculous question because a season is 38 games. Our players had downed tools second half of season.

We will finish at worst 6th this season. Newcastle have nowhere near a good enough squad to finish 6th. West Ham, Leicester, Brighton all have better chances of finishing above Newcastle.

A big wallet doesn’t get you up the league. Players and managers do.

19 games is hardly a small sample though

In fact they would finished above us if we took out just the first 5 games of last season. So the last 33 games

Mate, you do realise form is form and just that. They are not doing that in a whole season.

By your logic Newcastle should finish above Arsenal, Chelsea, Utd, West Ham, Spurs and Leicester too right? Because Newcastle had a better second half of season than every team in the league except the top 2.

Yes. They didn't sign any new players and though they have some good players in Guimaraes, Joelington and Saint Maximin who might improve us, we have a better squad alright and a much better coach I would think

The blind optimism of our fan base baffles me. Of course Newcastle will finish ahead. They're getting better, United are getting worse. We'll be lucky to finish top half.

Yes, we will 100% imo not finish above City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal. Maybe not even West Ham. But Newcastle yes.

Of course we will, 6th is our spot and nobody will take it away from us.
