Strikes you as the type, doesn't he? Like a guy who's walked into shot of a live show and can't help smile that he's on TV. The lack of seriousness at United, other clubs must see it coming. We are a basket case.
When he walks further from the camera and reveals his trainers (with what looks like a club suit). Reminds me of Alan Partridge at the funeral with his Castrol GTX jacket.

- Now some people can get away with wearing trainers with a suit, but John Murtough obviously can’t. I bet they thought he looked a right plonker in Turin.

Said it two months ago before the window opened that the signs were already visible with Murtough being given the responsibility of being a footballing director. Objectivity is a great barometer to assess change. Woodwards lack of strategic direction is an exact replica of the club's guidance under the hand of Murtough who seemingly comes across as being ETH employee rather than someone who's more authoritative.

A poor summer should without question throw his suitability for the job into the air.
I think it goes back well before that - principally, the horrible mismanagement of the post-Ole part of last season. But above all the impossibility of connecting the dots of what he has and hasn't done into something you could plausibly assume is some sort of plan. Main elements are:

1. Decision to go with an interim manager for the remainder of last season, and take the time to find a permanent successor. The benefit is you have a wider field of choice and a better process for filling a key position. The downside is that a defined interim has a much harder time getting the team to perform, and there are even fewer candidates available. So, the key question you have to answer is, do you already mostly have the team you're going to proceed with, or are you more in a rebuild place? If it's the latter, it's not crucial to finish the season well and it is actually of some advantage to you if the limitations of the squad become plain. In that case, it would make sense to hire someone like Ralf Rangnick, who's a clear-headed analyst of team-building and an outspoken man, but doesn't have the greatest credentials when it comes to making a dysfunctional team good in a hurry, and on a pragmatic basis. If you think the former, you would probably be better off with someone focused on immediate short term results, a pragmatic motivator. Murtough hired Ralf Rangnick.

2. January window. Again, this follows from the same question. If you think you largely have your squad, and they're in the kind of trouble we were in January, then it's crucial to do what you can to prop things up. If you think you're rebuilding, then it may make sense not to jump in but conserve funds. Murtough did nothing, and motivated that wit the need to conserve funds for the new manager.

3. Perception and morale. If you're going to proceed with the same core, you want to use the remainder of last season to build some confidence, make some progress. The last thing you want is to come out of it with a general perception (including in the squad) that they're shit, and not up to it. If you're going to tear things up, then it's different - you'll want things made clear. Murtough chose to allow Rangnick to publicly eviscerate the squad on a number of occasions.

4. Hiring Erik Ten Hag.

5. Transfer preparations. If you aim to implement a clear transfer strategy in such a situation, you use the time to prepare and establish some clear targets and priorities and how to pursue them. Murtough made it plain enough he's not really trying to do that. Instead, it's all about waiting for the new manager.

6. General strategy. In May/June, it became apparent that the club is not proceeding on the basis of assuming "open heart surgery" was necessary, but on the contrary sticking with the world-view of a year before: We have a talented squad, let's build on that and get more out of what we have. So, either that's Murtough's view, or he's unable to persuade the board to do what he thinks. In any case, he can obviously live with that as a basis for operations-

7. Transfer window. The bottom line is we're being turned down by pretty much every top level prospect, we're as slow and inefficient as ever in moving players out and transfer targets are seemingly mostly limited to players ETH knows directly. There's no sign of any strategy or longer-term thinking. Richard Arnold talks to fans in a pub and stresses how it's the manager's job to sign players, and they will back him - as if that's everything anybody could possibly want from upper management.

So, Murtough has made important calls that would make sense if the club was prepared to go to drastic action, but which were at worst catastrophic if it isn't. Currently he is trying to implement an approach that is severely compromised by his own previous actions. It is possible that he made those decisions because he saw the need for radical change, but that he was subsequently beaten down by the board and forced to change course. In which case he has failed in his job - as well as made very big decisions that would only have made sense if the club's fundamental strategy was a different one than it now is.

But I think there's a far more plausible explanation, which more easily explains everything he has and hasn't done: He doesn't really have an independent answer to what the squad needs or how the club should approach this, he doesn't have an ambition to encapsulate an overall football vision that guides transfers and key appointments and against which the progress the manager makes is judged, he hadn't a clear idea of what needed to be achieved last season after Ole was sacked or how that would impact down the road. hence, he lacked the expertise to correctly assess Rangnicks prospects as an interim, and how that would play out with the squad. He didn't feel he could make calls on January transfers - to him, that came down to do I throw my money at Ralf, or do I keep my money for the permanent guy. He didn't understand how Rangnick's public candidness would impact on the squad and results and general perception, so he didn't put his foot down. He just let Rangnick's recommendations evaporate because he didn't know what to do with them. He didn't prime the organisation and lay down the strategy for a transfer offensive because he didn't think he needed to. It just boils down to this: He really hoped Ralf Rangnick would make things a bit better, and now he really hopes Erik Ten Hag will put things right. Because he knows nobody else will.

Of course we can't know from the outside, but this is at least IMO the explanation that is by far the easiest to square with what we can observe.

The theory about signing the right players quickly falls apart when the names of Auba, Morata, and, God forbid, Icardi get brought up, doesn't it? It just seems like more of the same. I'm sure there are young strikers out there that would fit better.

Will say it again I am convinced there is links to these guys because Ronaldo is staying. We would see us targeting young strikers if it was clear he's definitely leaving

When John Murtough was promoted to be the director of football, my personal trainer who came from Ireland rang me and said “Guess what? One of my close friends just told me his cousin is going to be in charge of all football matters at United. I met his cousin before and I fecking can’t believe he got such a big job. Good on him”.

I am not saying that Ed was good. But he is upgrade to this clown. And that says more about Murtough than Ed
No he isn't. Murtough has not done a good job so far but his first window hasn't even finished yet. Barca haven't helped, neither has Ronaldo waiting till a month in the window to ask to leave and he's having fix all the issue Woodward left us with. All these bad contracts, let players get to the end of contracts and not replacing before they leave. You think the FDJ saga been bad, Ed did this multiple times over Cesc, Thiago and many more. This window has not been good but Ed has had this exact window many times over so to say you want that guy over Murtough is crazy.

I don't want Murtough in this role but let's not change history with what Woodward was.

You can't even call it kneejerk because the club were also panic buying after one game. One thing I know is even clueless Ed Woodward wouldn't have defended last season's team. We know now he was Murtough's superior not just in role but also football knowlege.

Woodward would've stuck us with more deadwood on high wages that we'd struggle to shift for years

Where are you all now who will judge Murtough when transfer window ends? This start on season is on him, you do realise that now?

This clown needs to go. Given ETH feck all to work with. We have a butchered mess of a squad and we need a complete overhaul yet he pushed for a mild evolution. Idiot.

When we hired Lvg, Jose and Ole; they all got players before season start. Ed at least knew how important is that new manager gets his players early in his first season

All his fans seem to have gone back into the woodwork quicker than Brentford manages to put 4 past us.

This clown couldn't run a lemonade stand to save his life. That much was obvious to everyone sane from the get-go. But I'm going to be honest with you. I didn't think a more incompetent person than Ed Woodward could exist. Someone like this should have been entirely out of the realm of possibility. It shouldn't have even been discussed. And yet here we are. John Murtough has managed to be that person. He has defied the odds.

At this level, for this job you need to be experienced, knowledgeable, calculating, and when necessary - ruthless. You need experience and character. You must be able to make the right decisions most of the time. You must have a clear vision of what you are trying to achieve and how to achieve it. Good managers don't necessarily make good recruiters or long-term planners. This is the job of the DoF. You need to be able to talk football with the manager on equal terms, provide compelling arguments, and at times rein in the manager. And sometimes you need to make hard decisions on who to keep and who to let go. It's not an easy job. It's not an entry-level job. It's not a job you go to learn.

In that position the club have put a complete novice. Working with the women's team and the youth's team has absolutely nothing to do with being a DoF at this level. It's like thinking you are ready to be chief engineer at AMD because you build PCs in your garage and can install Linux. It's become painfully obvious he is woefully out of his depth. He is not only lacking experience and knowledge, but is also weak of character. He didn't sack Ole when it should have been done. When it eventually become untenable for Solskjaer to remain manager, he didn't look for alternatives before sacking him "out of respect". What!? He didn't hire Conte because he didn't fit the club or something along those lines. He hired Rangnick to "learn from him", and then removed him when the man became a threat to his post. He was apparently dumbstruck by Ten Hag during the interviews, because he pointed out how awful the club has been, as if this isn't obvious to everyone with common sense. Then he completely relegated his duties to the manager and allowed him to spend 3 months chasing down one target at the expense of all others.

Murtough is weak, inexperienced, and incompetent. That last one was obvious considering Woodward rated him. He should be sacked immediately for dereliction of duty and the job should be given to an outside professional completely unrelated to the club who possesses the necessary faculties and CV for this job as soon as possible. This is the only viable way to proceed.

The only fan he still seems to have is the Bayern fan who likes to lecture us on patience. Easy to call for patience when your team is in a one horse race.

So much truth in the penultimate paragraph.

Murtough lacks the ability to even assess the problem so how can we expect him to provide an answer? He's simply not qualified to judge what our squad needs and whether the likes of Rangnick are right to say it needs open heart surgery. He doesn't have that level of football understanding. He isn't capable of sitting down and making a judgement on any of the key issues affecting this club. Essentially, he's an overpromoted youth football coordinator who got where is cos Ed Woodward liked him. If you sat down with him and tried to talk through what this squad needs to evolve into a high pressing, high possession team he'd probably stare back at you blanked eyed. Its clear he's not a thinker when it comes to football. If he was then he wouldn't have gone after the players he has this summer. As long as the Board keeps him in place there's no hope for us.

No one can convince me he should not be sacked tomorrow. Along with Darren Fletcher.

Just another clueless guy who's in a role he has no experience or qualifications for.

Rewarded for being a part of the failing system for a decade and fans lapped it up.

This club is in contention for the worst run club in world football, with only Barcelona challenging for the dubious honour. But at least they show ambition whilst being run into the ground

If you give Woodward and John a club like West Ham, they will have them relegated in couple of years max. Only at United such incompetent people can get a job and stay for years.

He’s a yes man with zero leverage, happy to do as he’s told and take the money. That’s why he’s has a successful career at Utd and it’s why he has this job. Pretty clear to anyone with half a brain that he was in no way qualified to be in charge of first team recruitment.

What is the point of a DOF if he just lets a coach pick targets? Coaches are not scouts and have limited knowledge.

The whole point is supposed to be longer term views and thr DOF knowing the current squad inside out. After the maulings we suffered last season half of these players should have been fighting for their United careers being squad members at best...instead we have made no major additions and are relying on the same garbage. This is pathetic and patience has fully run out now.

Instead of hiring a proper sporting/football director like Monchi or Luis Campos, they promoted a man who worked as a Director of Development & Sports Scientist at Everton, Fulham & Coventry to the sporting director role. Manchester United in a nutshell.

I wasn't happy when I heard that Woodward was finally going out but we were also making this guy our DoF and also hiring Fletcher. What's the point of making up roles for old boys/not suited people instead of just getting competent ones in FFS? Why can't we do anything properly?

This dunce went from possibly having Ragnick, Ten Hag and Mitchell at the club to having the amateur hour Woodward cronies at the helm putting all the recruitment on the fecking managers shoulders...

No modern club does this and even Fergie had David Gill. These chances are woefully out of their depth and I'm glad it's been exposed much much sooner than they would've liked.

I liked the policy we had under SAF where we'd only give players over 30 one-year rolling extensions. Even legends like Scholes and Giggs.

Rangnick had the right idea, overhaul the squad. We don‘t need 85 millions FDJ. We need to remove the rot in the team and replace them with players that are hungry and want to prove themselves.

Murthough and co didn‘t like Rangnick‘s assessment, because it means letting go players like Ronaldo which will hit the commercial side of the club.

It feels like it took the best part of 10 years of learning to Woodward to improve. Then Arnold and co came and have decided to start from scratch and ignore decent we might have done under Woodward.
