Have to manage him carefully which is a challenge as we also need him for every game, him and Martinez great tonight! Could become our best centerback partnership since Rio and Vidic

Comfortably his best performance by a mile for us. No coincidence it comes in partnership with a mad man next to him. Long may this flourish.

He was amazing. Calmly snuffed Liverpools attacks out. Martinez and him are a terrific fit.

Wish we had another one in his mould given his fitness issues.

We saw the man with 4 CLs last night. Him and Martinez were a stone wall. I just hope he stays fit.

Said it before, I'll say it again he should be our captain. Just please stay fit Rafa!

That was the guy we bought. Pure class. Moves like a racehorse and was organising the defence all the time. Will be central to our success this season so let’s just hope he stays in one piece.

It was maybe no coincidence that he looked so much better having Martinez next thing. Similar dynamic to playing with Ramos.

If Varane can stay fit, iI really feel he could / should be our captain.

I'd give the captaincy to Martinez. Players will run through a wall for that lad. A warrior

Yup, we've seen Maguire try to play the role of the aggressive defender and massively struggled. So many goals conceded because he rushes out and is second to the ball, leaving our defence wide open. Slow to the ball and slow to recover.

Martinez showed how that role is played, and Varane acted like a Rolls Royce sweeper cleaning things up behind. Perfectly balance each other, whereas Maguire and Varane don't complement each other at all, really.

People have been asking about Varane's leadership and manager has mentioned it for Varane. As strange as it might be to some, Varane somehow always manage to be considered a leader.

Leader last night. That's the Varane we bought... Seemed really fired up for the game - cheering tackles/blocks etc. Must have been happy having Martinez as his partner or knowing big Cas was watching.

He is quality, but we all know that…what we want is for him to stay fit.

Can he play the early kick-off this Saturday? I’m not 100% confident he can, but let’s hope he is more accustomed to the league in his second season.

As others have said if he can stay fit would be a huge plus for our season , looked the elite player last night we were all hoping he would be when he signed.

He said in an interview during preseason that getting a good preseason this season would make a big difference to his performances this year and was hoping he can show Utd fans the best of him. Hopefully he can get a decent injury free run now.

Good chemistry between defenders are surely important and him and Martinez looked like great pair.

Great game, great defender! Injuries are a concern, perhaps he should sit out the cup games (FA cup and league cup). I'd even be tempted to rest him for some of the 'easier' games in the EL!

The partnership with him and Martinez looks very complimentary. (obviously just one game so lets see)

Just hope he stays fit. Thats the big concern for us.

Would you feel more confident of we kicked off 2.5 hours later at 3pm? Of course he can play, he has plenty of time.

Might be like Samson, but instead of in hair, it's on his dick. You cut it off, he starts losing his power.
To be fair, everyone loses certain powers with their dicks cut off.

That’s what leading from the back looks like.

Immense performance. His constant communication with the rest of the defenders was what impressed me the most.

There are better examples but this is a family forum so I can’t post them.

Dreading him getting injured. Would still play Lindelof instead of Maguire next to Martinez though!
