I honestly don't think he played badly? He played several very good passes to Elenga/Sancho/Ronaldo throughout the game and ran the channels. He has no hold up play so of course doesn't fit playing centrally, but can do it better than any of the others we have at least. He'll be miles better playing from the left, as he's just more suited to it.

I don't think this is how ETH will view it necessarily. One way to look at it is that his skillset does not fit with the desired tactics. Another way is that he offers tactical flexibility. There will be matches where we will struggle to hold possession and counterattacks will represent most of the goal scoring opportunities. Rashford might be a better fit for these types of matches than Sancho or Antony, especially if rotation is needed anyways.
Sorry but totally I disagree with that bold bit, as he is rubbish at holding up the ball due to a first poor touch which does see him losing possession, and most of his runs when played out wide, normally end up with him running into dead ends, don't get me wrong, I would love to see him rediscover the form he first had when he burst onto the scene, but he earns way too much and it maybe a reason why he lacks motivation and desire to improve, as his demeanour gives the impression he doesn't give a stuff.

The thing is that we don't have a striker who will give more than 'a bit here and a bit there'. We just need to improve the situation next summer, or January if possible. Ronaldo, Martial, and Rashford all have issues, and people will get frustrated with all of them this season.

I'm not sure Martial will pin down the role. I do think people are forgetting that he has had an issue with work ethic over his time at Manutd. He was booed by Sevilla fans whilst he was on loan, due to his lack of effort. He is better at the hold-up role, but the lack of runs that he makes will be an issue. For me, Martial doesn't make the run that opens up the space for Fernandes - he has shown his reluctance to do this throughout his career. He will not press anymore than Rashford, either.

Rashford has flaws in the role, and it is clear he has never been a striker. But, despite playing out of position, he has still played a major role in our three wins. We cannot guarantee the same would have happened with Ronaldo or Martial.
I’m not a Martial fan, they both need replacing you are right. I just think Martial is much less of a liability in possession than Rashford and a much better CF. Both are pretty shocking in terms of effort and pressing. Rashfords gonna be the one though who gives the ball away when four of his teammates have sprinted past him leaving a chasm in midfield for opponents to attack when it’s only 1-0.

At the start of the second half there was a short period where he seemed to single handedly ruin every attack. That being said, overall I don't think he was as bad as some people have made out. Looked better when moved out wide.

Let's not lose our heads here. This is like when people ask how we will replace Ronaldo's goals. The reality is we can replace contributions of either verye asily because of how much they cap the attack in other aspects. It's just a matter of whose limitations we prefer to play with. The last two wins were harder than they should have been because of our CFs. We can't sustain anything and they are a huge part.

Was a mixed bag played some lovely passes to Sancho and co but then would feck up some easy passes.

Looked dead around the 70 minute mark though, probably could have done with Fred coming on a bit sooner.

Don't know what to think about him anymore.

I forget if he in the main always played like this and was just overhyped and has been found out, but what he does isn't actually as bad as it looks, or if was once as good as his reputation and so the expectation for him to be far better than this is fair.

No offence but what the feck are you smoking? Absolutely horrible as he always is these days.

No idea how he gets 45 mins never mind a full game. The easiest pass to assist Sancho. He probably killed/destroyed about 4 or 5 really good positions by being a complete waster on top of his useless hold up/link up play
I guess me and the manager sees the same things. He has been better than Sancho and Elanga for all of the games so far and thats why he gets to play more than them... None of the 3 has been brilliant, far from it, but Rashford has been best of a mediocre bunch

He played a major role against Southampton??? He was as anonymous as a striker could be in that game.

He lost the good parts of his game mostly after the back injury, but this has basically been the type of footballer he's been since returning from that.

Yeah he played ok. Generally hopeless with his back to goal but not too bad otherwise. Quality assist and linked up well with Ronaldo.

Really good assist and I do think he’s playing better than last season but the way he gets brushed aside in any physical duel is frustrating. He’ll never be good enough as a CF as he can’t play with his back to goal.

This is it. He's dropped them, why not continue the trend. I'm not sure how you can look at Ronaldo out there tonight and think he's a worse option even if he doesn't pretend to run as much as Rashford.
Reason Maguire and Shaw have been dropped is because Ten Hag has options. When Varane still wasn't fit Maguire was still playing. Before the acquisition of Antony we were bare thin in attack and many would say we still need more options. With Martial having been injured and before Antony's arrival we had no choice but to play him and Elanga, 2 players that should be starting games. Ronaldo might be a better option than Rashford as a CF but his lack of pressing, energy is what keeping him out of Ten Hag starting line up.

Hopefully Martial gets over his injury issues, and with the arrival of Antony, this will mean we won't have to see Rashford as a starting CF forward nor Elanga ever starting any PL game for us.

Totally agree

same is true IMO of malacia

the composure difference on the ball with malacia and martial is different than rashford and Shaw.

today at about 70th minute we kept ball on left side with Casimero and malacia. There were3 or 4 times when Ronaldo wanted a through ball and malacia didn’t play it. We kept the ball worked it across the pitch went to Dalot and then he tried to force a through ball similar to the ones malacia declined to play and 3 players weee caught ahead of the pass which was intercepted. Mctominay broke it down but there is a clumsiness there which I think is crazy, and it is all composure based,

martial is similar and not as explosive as rashford but he also won’t lose the ball and get multiple players caught out of play as much as rashford would as a center forward.

I honestly think neither rashford or martial are good enough but if I had to pick one as CF it would be martial.
On left wing I would prob pick rashford but he has to work harder

The number of people touting Martial above Rashford (and I am no Rashford lover) is legitimately staggering. Yes, he used to do some pretty dribbles but he's been terrible, and when he's not been terrible he's been injured, for the last three(?) or four(?) seasons.
Martial unlike Rashford can actually play football. His issue the last 2 years have been injuries. Martial can actually link up play, make better decisions and hold up the ball, he is miles away from Rashford as a striker.

If Martial can stay fit and that's a big if, Rashford will strugle to get into this side, I can't really see him being here next season.

Despite the assist, a woeful performance overall, but you wouldn't know that if all you knew about the match is what you read in The Sun:

Man Utd ratings: Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford shine in double act while Cristiano Ronaldo enjoys cameo from bench | The Sun

MARCUS RASHFORD - 8

Starting to make the striker role his own after years out wide.

Pressed well and gave Leicester defenders little time to dwell on the ball.

Another impressive showing which is sure to frustrate benched Cristiano Ronaldo.

Maybe, but you will never know in that situation; what we do know is that we have won 3 games in a row with Rashford playing, for most of which he was the striker. He has never been huge effective as a striker, but he still contributed to the wins from being out of position. This is why I'm not getting the huge negativity around him when he did what he needed to in the end.

We don't exactly have great options for the CF role to guarantee the situation if we changed him to our other options. It is not like we have Haaland waiting to come back. Martial and Ronaldo also have major issues with them.

Ronaldo is older and has lost his pace; the other areas of his games have deteriorated significantly, also. Martial: making runs has always been a problem with him; his lethargy has also been a problem; inconsistency also, finishing has gone downhill. I believe we would have struggled with any of them in that role.

The people who write player ratings are talking vegetables. Even lower on the intellect ladder than a typical tabloid transfer correspondent.

Being asked to play a role he can't play. Ruined multiple attacks. Need Martial back. In a game like against Liverpool when we get way more transitional moments, Rashford can be alright as the #9. In games like this, he's not that guy. I think it's harsh to say that he's not working for the team. He is, but what we're needing from him now is not his skillset.

Good assist for Sancho. I think Mr #7 probably tries to keep running and shoot in that position. I give him props for choosing the right option and playing the pass.

I believe this is imagination - there is no way he would be playing as much as he does if that is reality. People were saying the same after the Liverpool game until proven wrong by stats, and they were pretty much forced to backtrack against hard reality. Those stats are not readily available, though, to normal people - you only get to know when Sky/BT decide to show them.

He has played pretty much every minute of every game so far this season. This completely counters the idea that he doesn't try as there is no way Ten Hag would have him in the first team for so long. Ronaldo or Garnacho would have come in after the first two games.

Despite the criticism, he has actually significantly contributed to our last three goals. Assist today; The run that pulled the defenders away from the Fernandes to open up the space for the goal against Southampton; Goal against Liverpool. We have known for years that he is not a striker, but, despite that, he has been a reason we have been winning games.
You have basically assumed a lot of things there and pointed them as facts. The naked eye test showed Rashford as not being as engaged as any of his team mates, but we can wait for the stats to come and show that. He did sprint a few times when we tried to play the ball behind Leicester defence but when not in possession he was just jogging along. There was a time when the ball was just in front of him and Bruno chased from the flank but he simply stood there. That's what he was doing.

ETH not changing a winning starting 11 is hardly ground breaking or any proof of Rashford's poor pressing. Again why are his Liverpool stats being brought up? The entire team looked up for it then and everyone did their part. However he is again returning to type with performances like today.

Once Antony comes in and dislodges Rashford, only then will some of you open your eyes.

As far as priority I had Martial over Rashford over Ronaldo. That was before tonight. Personal rationale was I preferred Rashford;s tendency to be invisible to Ronaldo's "me"-centric playstyle, but if Rashford is going to be getting involved like tonight then I'll switch to Ronaldo because Rashford being involved with link up is straight trash even with the assist. Basically I feel we would have won either of the last 2 games with the Ronaldo that played tonight or the Martial that played against Liverpool. The downside is just one will get injured and the other will revert to playing for himself. Ronaldo played unselfish tonight but it never lasts. I almost choked when I saw him refuse a shot to square a pass. If he can buy in longer than one game he can start over Rashford easily

When was the last time he showed that then? Except on tour, when it didn't matter.
Last week…That second goal against Liverpool doesnt happen if its Rashford that has to set it up. Van Dijk would have simply pushed him off the ball.

No he hasn't. Dalot was very good tonight because he had Elanga consistently running back to support him. Sancho has been mediocre on the whole but from time to time he pulls off great bits of skill that Rashford hasn't been capable of in a very long time. Rashford as CF offers absolutely nothing to the team and as LW doesn't offer a lot more.

Elanga isn't good enough to be a first team starter but he offers more than Rashford to the team. Sancho has been playing with Rashford accompanying him but Rashford isn't close to be on the same wave length as Sancho and it does show on the pitch. There were times against Southampton that Sancho had 2 or 3 players around him with no outs because Rashford doesnt know the spaces he should be occupying so he either has to pass back or he loses the ball. Martial isn't close to being my favourite player but at least he has a higher footballing IQ than Rashford and is good enough to play those slick passes that Sancho is so good at receiving and giving. Once Martial is fit and Antony is up to speed then it will be Elanga and Rashford that gives way so I very much doubt you and the manager see the same things because Rashord isn't starting over Sancho at LW in any shape or form and he certainly isn't starting over Martial as CF.

Yeah. Its why Antony was so important. And why we need martial back. Our wingers look dead on their feet after an hour and are an injury waiting to happen due to it. That rotation will help all of them keep fresh, firing and give us that option to kill teams on the break against tiring legs.

I have been pleasantly surprised by Rashford this season. I have been impressed with his work rate. He just needs to add a bit of composure in the final third, and he can have a very very good season.

No need to argue with me mate, the manager picks him and plays him more than the rest too. That just confirms my views. He will play more minutes than Sancho and Martial this season it looks like. And Rashford will get better with time and confidence

The moment when Ronaldo put a ball in across the box and Rashford wasn't even in sight, and instead it was Eriksen trying to get onto the end of it sums him up as a forward for me.

He has no idea where to be on the pitch, he could pick up so many easy goals but is never in the right position.

Fans can talk about how physically he regressed because of injuries but he lacks in other areas that have nothing to do with fitness.
