They're supposedly expecting unprecedented numbers to London but I can understand even if that doesn't happen there's so many elites from around the world coming to England so much more security is needed for counter terrorism after the bombings and stabbings. If something does go off they'll be screaming why wasn't there enough police. A lot of us don't care or have a quiet respect, but the problem is enough do care to turn this into a large difficult event attracting all kinds of security issues.

Ultimately I could see how this weekend was a bust close to the funeral, all the more reason to have last weekends games go ahead, pay respects or a minutes applause in public to mark the occasion. It's even rekindled some resentment now we've had it all called off last week right down to kids playing.

This weekend always seemed doubtful if you looked at it rationally, think there’s be less annoyance and people being more reasonable if they’d not binned off last weekends games for no reason.

So, there's not a couple of hundred police officers + rivate security available at London because of the Queen's funeral? How small is London's police force?

i think people are woefully underestimating just how massive this weekend is going to be people wise. It’s going to be unlike anything the country has seen in a very very long time.

There's going to be a huge number of heads of state and goverment too. That's the difference one would imagine
Most of those types if not all will be managed by their own teams flying in. Bog standard non armed response officers would not get close.
I fully expected London games to fall this week, especially Arsenal who are centred in the borough where the majority of resources are taken. Albeit four days earlier is strange..

Pulling in coppers from Manchester though is quite something though and I’m trying to work it out.
I get planning for worse case scenario but the numbers don’t add up. Diana’s funeral had an approx of 1 million attendees. I’d be amazed if the Queens sees anything like that number.

It’s the literal queen. The number will be bigger I expect, if that number you quoted is accurate.

Miles more iconic than the person on every single banknote and coin for the past 70 years in almost half the English speaking world and beyond.

It’s the actual end of an Age in Britain with her passing and onto a new one. Messi and Ronaldo are irrelevant to this in the grand scheme going on future historians.

She is someone who will be forever studied as she was the first monarch to be filmed pretty much from birth. It is an age defining event for Britain.

The Queen is adored by most so that is redundant. This is 100% bigger than Diana in the history books but Diana was more a shock created mass hysteria I seem to remember but I was a kid at the time. It was also a great tabloid story in the age of paparazzi who killed her. Different thing.
Not enough jizz. 4/10

It's not just the numbers of people coming to the UK, it's the seniority of the people who'll be in the capital. It's just not possible to have full fixture schedule whilst every significant head of state (plus likely delegation) is here. It is going to seriously feck this season with the league/WC schedule though. I'd kinda like to see the league continue over the WC - even if it's just a couple of games - to see which teams do best.

The dignitaries will be flying in after the football has finished, they're not spending several days in the UK.

They will be flying in over the weekend, at the latest, and many will bring delegations who will want to conduct meetings across the dates.

Reality is, this has become the highest level/widest spreading diplomatic event of the year - perhaps with COP27. And they have a little over a week to prepare for it.

League choosing to postpone for the weekend just gone was the stranger decision.

At least there's a semblance of logic to these games being canceled, last week was performative nonsense. Completely illogical and irrational from the authorities.

Those 2 league games will not be played this year, depending on our possible long run in the europa league I can't see where they will fit in. It is at this point almost certain utd will have to ditch a good run in the FA cup and league cup.

There simply is too much football on the calendar.

Expected reasoning being they’re sending officers down to assist in London. Quite remarkable considering less than a month ago London hosted a carnival for 2 million (and a shit tonne of those there purely for trouble) over the course of a bank holiday weekend and the police of Manchester weren’t required. @TheReligion hear of any of your lot coming down for that? I didn’t…
Think about 7000-9000 officers were at the carnival. Is the suggestion therefore that more numbers would be needed for the queens funeral ?
Looks like they have already been deployed.

Off United site:
Following extensive conversations with the Premier League, Greater Manchester Police and Trafford Council, the decision has been made to postpone Manchester United's Premier League fixture against Leeds United, scheduled to take place at Old Trafford at 14:00 BST on Sunday 18 September.

That makes no sense though if they’re pulling resources from other cities, surely you would cancel every event which is non essential before calling for support.

I get how big Monday is going to be numbers wise, but I don't understand why they would need so many police on the weekend. Surely there's going to be no one crowding a day/two before the funeral?

Low risk game and only 17k crowd means the policing required is far less than say 60k at the Emirates with 3k of PSV ultras marching around London..

Different generation though man. We’ll see but I don’t think it’ll surpass Diana.

Exactly. It doesn’t make a lot of sense. As said, London games not going ahead I get, met police telling football “go feck yourselves we’re busy, we’re prioritising” .. fine.
All this stuff about it being a numbers issue and requiring Manchester police in, yeah not making a lot of sense to me.

Jacob Rees-Mogg has announced that all transportation of police must be made by horse and carriage. Therefore in order to be in London in time for the funeral they should set off now.

Cancellations this weekend I can understand. Makes the cancellations of the previous weekend look even more imbecilic.

Ridiculous, and people will rightly be fuming with travel plans etc. But avoiding playing Leeds three days after a match in Moldova not a disaster from a footballing side of things.

Yeah but MET Police are asking for support from GMP when they could just say we’re not supporting any non essential events until the funeral. If they’re still short on officers that’s when you reach out to others.
