I’m curious why @The Corinthian has over 80 posts in this thread, @Paul the Wolf over 70 and @Moby over 60.

That’s over 200 posts between three posters who don’t really like England/Britain, dislike The Queen/Monarchy and want to keep calling other people strange and baiting then repeatedly..

Take a look at yourselves.

Now that is weird.
Just enjoy it, they're frothing at the mouth and trying desperately to pretend they're not. Excuses for obsession incoming.

Didn't know about the Croft tradition. Haven't seen many of these royal funerals apart from Philip's last year.

Yes, they have that by Purcell but that's the only one from him. I don't remember ever singing that hymn so I just had a listen on Spotify. Pretty dull stuff. I like the last movement of the Parry to the words "one who never changes.." but the lead up to it is a bit meh. The Vaughan Williams is not his finest either.

I'm hard to please.
Surprisingly, I liked the MacMillan and thought the Weir was completely dull.

The Westminster choir were great, but I thought the Windsor one was even better and the Harris Bring Us O Lord God was the highlight of the day. Along with the tall man in the procession, obvs.

I’m not into symbolism very much, but the moment when they took the orb, sceptre and crown off the coffin and placed them on the altar was really quite moving. A sort of de-crowning.

That’s fair but I think some people will be offended by some of the things posted here and that’s been allowed to slide.

Not sure why the need to keep posting and baiting.
If you take a step back there's a lot of weird, nasty things posted by the "I'm not a Royalist but" crew.
I don't think I've posted anything nasty about anyone. Bit of sarcasm here and there, some of the comments are so hilarious it's difficult to resist.

The monarchy do not run the country as far as I know and they just cut ribbons and sign off things.

Look at other countries and presidents etc net worths across the globe. I doubt they hand it all back to their subjects just like yourself and I wouldn’t.
Not sure you are getting my point but they reached the status of a head of the state through election, not because they were born in a particular family and did nothing else.

The bagpipes were absolutely brilliant to be fair today and the military didn’t put a step out of place.

I personally just find it strange and quite disrespectful (not necessarily you but in general). There’s a variety of different people on the Caf, and age groups, some of whom may well be upset by all of this. Why should they be baited and belittled by others who seem to want to try an exert their perceived superiority on them?

If people don’t like it just be quiet and leave it be. As others have done. It’s really not hard to have some decency.

The discussion is around not allowing people to rule the country because of their birthright and not eradicating poverty or inequality of wealth, just to be clear. When it comes to the former, a bunch of countries don't do that, and for good reason. Anyone who thinks democratic elections are as bad as having a monarchy needs to get their heads checked.
This is largely a very daft post to be fair. The UK is a democracy, the monarch role is primarily ceremonial with little to no actual power. What they do have the power to do however is to keep the democratically elected leaders centred. Whilst it’s not perfect (primarily on the topic of distribution of wealth, particularly as late stage capitalism is in full effect) it’s better than allowing power hungry populists like a Trump, or a Putin, or even dating right back a Hitler having full control because that top spot is voted for.

Personally I’m morally against the idea of someone being born better, but I am also aware that there needs to be things in place to stop absolute power being given to anybody who might want it.

Yeah, I get your point but no over system is perfect either. Look at the US over the last few years with all the goings on there.

Russia, Canada, Australia, India, Pakistan, China….."…..I was just asking who has got it perfect?

I'm aware, which is why people who still consider the royal family as anything special who deserve the kind of attention they get are the ones being referred to here. That's the whole reason we are having this entire song and dance about the "queen's" death, when there is no place for concepts like kings and queens as of now. It's hilarious to see people stand around for hours and go on about how being near that coffin was the greatest moment they will ever have in their lives. I'm glad I'll never be able to relate to such utter lunacy.

Feckers won't be remembered after 10 weeks. Nevermind 100 years.

Their insecurity at this stage is quite obvious. I don't get how so many people feel threatened. I manage to work full time, have fun on a weekend and generally live a happy life. Why people would want to spend all day winding up other folk is beyond me.

Born and bred in England. If some of you lot can't even respect the monarchy you live with, Not under. That's your problem.

Royal Navy
Royal Air force
Royal Army

Why paint this thread with all your jeasous and/or complete toxic comments?

Can always feck off and live in Russia or some shit?
The irony. The Navy, air force and army fought in two wars against fascism, and here you are, if you don't share the same opinion feck off to Russia. Outstanding.

I'd be more worried if people weren't allowed to have different opinions. I'm of the older age group but may hold the same opinions as younger people. Being told to push off to Russia or Korea because they don't agree that the Uk is not the most fantastic country in the world is a bit extreme. Like people who supported Remain were told to push off to the EUSSR if they didn't like it. Weird.

They are all criticized over their flaws as well and anyone who defends those. But obviously the reasons are different so the whataboutism doesn't work here. There are some things that are absolutely indefensible and having monarchies is one of those.

Oh you can have different opinions. No one said otherwise. But that’s not what’s happened here and let’s not try to pretend it is.

Sly derogatory comments and baiting other posters isn’t expressing an opinion nor is calling people ‘flag shaggers’ and other crass, small minded nonsense.

I think you'll have found a lot of people following today's ceremonies as much for the queen than for the royal family. I don't think Charles will get the level of turn out/global interest as was seen today.

The queen was and is a symbol of wartime Britain, and someone who resided over all major events of the mid-late 20th century. It's a hugely significant moment for that alone, particularly how volatile so much feels right now (in the UK and elsewhere).

But you’ve not offered a single better alternative to the current system and instead quote a minority of people? You say there’s no place so would you rather a President Putin? A Chancellor Hitler?

Can get a 3 pack of scissors and some pens quite cheaply on Amazon TBF under £10.

The Royal Family take tens of millions per year, it's quite a cushy life for them. They do work until the day they die though, but you get big castles, 100s of staff working for you, definitely not too shabby.

They are all criticized over their flaws as well and anyone who defends those. But obviously the reasons are different so the whataboutism doesn't work here. There are some things that are absolutely indefensible and having monarchies is one of those.
I do see why a Monarchy is nice from a tradition perspective, and they generate the country good money through tourism, it's in itself a brand. The issue is more around the scandal of the likes of Andrew who you can't really defend for one and the fact they're "born into it" when they're just regular people that used to say they were "appointed by god".

It's definitely a life of privilege. I can't see the Monarchy staying around for thousands of years more, eventually people will think its antiquated but it might remain for a hundred or so more years.

If the question is would I rather have someone who has been elected through democracy over someone who was born in a particular family, then yeah obviously the answer is yes. I would think of a bunch of other criteria to add to the democratically elected part but even without that, there's no question and it's baffling someone would ask that question.

I've seen the occasional remark but being told to leave the country because they don't agree with them is a bit more radical than a couple of minor insults.
There are plenty of sly derogatory remarks from the other camp as well.

Any way it should be all over now and they can go back to praising how wonderfully the government is doing and looking after their citizens.

I thought the MacMillan was better than the Weir but that wasn't exactly hard. Not something I'll be going back to listen to though.

I just caught up with the Windsor service and the obvious highlight for me was "All My Hope on God is Founded" which is comfortably my favourite hymn.

It's a very odd statement, the "leave the country if you don't like it" mantra. To say if you aren't a full blown royalist you should leave or you don't agree with monarchies mean you should leave.

It sounds like a ****, or going to extreme to one way you can't see differing opinions.

I’m Irish mate, I grew up being taught to hate the royal family, but even I understand that’s bollocks now and they serve a purpose just like anybody else.
What purpose is that, though? I can't see that they do. They hold a lot of wealth for no particular reason other than their blood. If the Monarchy was abolished they wouldn't be replaced with another politician who held onto the same amount of wealth and land for perpetuity. That makes no sense at all. They could maybe have a figure head President like Ireland but that's a finite paid job and doesn't come close to riches held by Monarchy, not to mention the stolen jewels in crowns and all that caper.

Don’t something like 8 of the 10 most equal countries in the world have a monarch?

Whilst I’m glad we live in a democracy and that our monarchy has little real power, it’s a bit odd to be making such extreme comments on a day when every Western world leader dropped everything to come to the funeral of one of our greatest statesmen.

Especially when our PM struggles to get US Presidents to visit, and our system keeps producing terrible (and largely Etonian) PMs.

For me either extreme is uncalled for but that’s the issue with the Caf these days. You have to be seen to be in one camp or the other. It’s not really allowed to be in the middle ground and if you are someone will try and label you.

That said I genuinely can’t comprehend why anyone would camp out in a thread about a persons death and take the opportunity to bait other posters and make derogatory comments.

Live and let live.

There's has to be a reason why PMs are largely useless, I mean it must be a hard job because reform in any sector takes a very long time. I struggle to think of a politician who was liked.

Some do, like European countries, some don't like a lot of Arab states. There aren't many monarchies (28) outside the British Commonwealth group of 15, some of which look as if they will remove the British king as Head of State very soon.

Tbf the Queen had a lot of respect worldwide. and the World Leaders would always come. This time they had plenty of notice (about 10 days).

It’s what they do isn’t it and what they believe in for hundreds upon hundreds of years, It’s like asking why does Ireland want a Republic.

They bring with them an order or stability a sense of pride and grandeur. Then you have their connections to the world leaders and place on the world stage and their connection to religion and Protestantism, lots of reasons they are important for society.
