It isn't that interesting to be honest. New manager thinks he's of limited use. The Princess Diana act is boring

The last one is interesting because the question was about how the team would take it, if the club and the manager welcomed back Ronaldo. Reading between the lines the answer gives the impression that he wouldn't be fond of it.

Beckham supposedly wants him at Galaxy, let’s just swap him with Chicarito and get rid. Let the little pea get a nostalgic welcome and then we spend big in the summer. Maybe try for a loan with some out favour ST for depth as well.

Inter Miami not LA Galaxy. They're absolutely awful

The link was posted above somewhere - can't seem to find it now.

What I said above isn't true, though - the story did come out at the time (or at least that same season). Try googling ronaldo + munich. The original article was published in The Guardian (I think).
I remember it at the time , I don't think very many United fans cared/ believed it.

Now I say that Ronaldo does not have the courage to admit that for three years he is no longer himself. This year he had to go to Sporting Lisbon and then quit after the World Cup. He’s a problem for the coaches, he puts his teammates in trouble. He didn’t even call [Karim] Benzema to congratulate him [on winning the Ballon d’Or].

You need to have self-love and the dignity to say ‘I’m finished’. His agent and those around him let him pass like the strongest, but they have not understood that he has not made it for 3-4 years.

“He will continue to score goals in a thousand ways, but in terms of movements he cannot take it anymore. He must have self-love, this summer he had to say: ‘Ok, I’m going to Sporting, I’m going to the World Cup and see you all’.

“Instead he puts Manchester United in difficulty, his team, with which he made history. He has the eyes of the world on him and he behaves like this.

“(Erik) Ten Hag is consistent, he makes him play 10-15 minutes. He went to America, China, Dubai. He has nothing to do with football that matters to him. The athleticism is over, if he raised his hand and said enough. And I would applaud him.”

He has a blindfold in front of his eyes and thinks he can play until he’s 50. Dear Ronaldo, I tell you one thing: finish big with the World Cup. He can’t keep throwing tantrums and he can’t think he can still play at a high level. He has such a disproportionate ego, but he is not like [Lionel] Messi who can also play sitting down. He can’t physically cope anymore. He is confirming that he always puts his selfishness first.”

I hope that Rio's just pretending not to see the writing on the wall with regard to Ronaldo's decline.

Carragher is spot on. He's not an asset anymore, he's a liability.

Personally I think that kicking him out of the club is the opposite of what you should do.

That is what he wants.

Keep him.

You have an option to extend his contract to 2024, do it.

Yes it will cost millions but he won't play ball so fine him whenever he does something he shouldn't (that will knock millions off the final bill).

Just waste 18months of what little time he has left of his career.

Never play him of course.

And just waste his time and let him watch Messi overtake every record he has left.

That would be a far bigger punishment.

It would only be good if the club believes that would help them legally, or if the players or managers need support in this (which so far they haven't done - ETH has managed this difficult personality very well).

Otherwise why bring Sir Alex into it?
Because it was a phone call from Sir Alex to Cristiano Ronaldo ("you just can't join City") which caused this whole sorry mess in the first place.

Furthermore, why has CR7 been starting games recently? Why was he made captain recently? Why does CR7 say he doesn't respect the manager? Could it be that he knows that the Glazer(s) employed ETH as the new manager, but ultimately they want to see Ronaldo (The King) play so they instruct him to play him (possibly via the Robson/Gill/SAF consultancy group) and he then plays*! So when Ronaldo says he doesn't respect the manager, perhaps its because the manager is taking instructions from people higher up the organisation structure. Just like Ole wasn't in full control when Sir Alex basically made Ronaldo a guaranteed starter with his comments "you start your best players" after the Everton game last season....

This is just a theory, by-the-way, but it can't be discounted especially until we see the full TalkTV thing tonight and tomorrow.

You have to remember that these American owners will believe that Ronaldo is an asset to the club, just because of his twitter numbers and his shirt sales. In addition, they possibly look at CR7 as some sort of soccer equivalent to Tom Brady who still performs successfully in his 40s, but we all know that PL soccer and American football are 2 very different sports especially in the current era of speedy players and constant pressing.

That's probably accurate. I remember reading this story well after Ronaldo left for Madrid (around 2011, I would think), but not much was made of it then either. And back in 2008, there wasn't much talk about it (as I remember it anyway).

Of course, Ronaldo was extremely popular with most United fans at the time.

Love what Ten Hags been saying! As long as he’s the manager no player will be bigger then the club. The club comes first! That’s our Manager!!

Regardless of my bias towards the Club, the fact he sat down and had an amicable talk with Piers Morgan should be a massive red flag.

Exactly, anyone who wants an accurate, fair and balanced Interview, without drama and sensationalism doesn't go to Piers Morgan
Piers Morgan thinks he has a scoop no one else could get, but in fact, Ronaldo calculated who would get him the exposure he wanted.

They say bad news is better than no news, Ronaldo obviously thinks any exposure is better than none.

Never heard of this guy before but he is speaking truth. Ronaldo should have gone in the summer, finished full circle at sporting whether he got paid or not and retired with dignity. This has all just gone so sour, and he has trashed his reputation in football and His legacy with our fans.

Has he said this? May I ask where? I thought the club were taking the line that they are 'disappointed' but wouldn't be making further comment until after the full interview has been shown.

I'd love to know why ETH gave Ronaldo the role of Captain recently, surely that was only going to fuel his massive ego not send out the 'no player is bigger then the club' message. It seemed a particularly bizarre move coming just a few weeks after he had to reprimand the star for leaving a game early (again).

To be honest I think there was a (healthy?) distrust of the media/ journalists in general back then.

Nowadays we probably have more of an idea which journalist is right more than wrong (tiers?) or a PR guy for the club or players involved.

Here is some "realtime" reaction from 2008 @Chesterlestreet https://www.redcafe.net/threads/all-ronaldos-future-comments-speculation.204041/post-4789679

You forgot Fellaini. It's his fault.
Of course. How could I!

Controversial opinion: if Fellaini were still around and a bit younger, ETH would have loved him. His chest control alone would have made him a damn sight more effective at centre forward than current Ronaldo.

In terms of sources, probably yes.

The Guardian was pretty well regarded back then too, though (as in: they weren't known for publishing obviously badly researched or fake stuff).

So, I think it was more to do with Ronaldo's status: most United fans desperately wanted to keep him at the club, he was considered the best/most exciting player we'd had since George Best, so most of us were likely to cut him considerable slack (and very likely ignore an article like this one, or at the very least not make a big deal of it).

ETH since day 1 has always said no player will be bigger then the club aslong as he’s in charge. When he made Ronaldo captain that’s because Bruno wasn’t available and obviously Maguire didn’t start. He seen Ronaldo as the biggest leader in the starting 11. He could of give it Eriksen or Casemiro… probably not Casemiro so much because he’s not very good at English yet.

The contrast in professionalism between ronaldo and Ibrahimovic whilst in the twilight of their careers, it's a shame Ronaldo couldn't take Ibrahimovic example.of putting ego to the side and accepting a limited role to stay at a good level in football.
