Would publicly saying that the club didn’t support him through his daughter’s illness when there is categorically proof that they gave him leave of absence not constitute gross misconduct?

The registration and the employment contract are too separate things, unless there is an agreement between Ronaldo and the club, the club is in possession of the registration until the end of June 2023. Now the issue with FIFA is that they don't accept transfer registrations when there is an ongoing litigation.

I’ve no doubt he was expecting to be paid off or club to cover majority of wages for him to go elsewhere. That would allow him to save face and potentially give him more options of where to go.

Ian Wright summed it up perfectly. The guy needs to come to terms with his age and the fact it diminishes his ability to be at the very top of his profession. EtH is in charge of the squad and must act in the best interests of the club to get results. The team is certainly better without Ronaldo and I always thought the very same even with his goals last season.

There are several statements on his part that could be scrutinized and - possibly - be considered untruthful (with United being able to prove them as such).
If just one such statement can be proven to be untruthful, then - again - he's fecked: in the sense that he's made disparaging and potentially damaging comments about his employer that are unfounded.
