Croatian-German co-commentator Ivan Klasnic just said on German tv: "like they always say, Croatian players are the Brazilians of Europe, ..."

Is this really something that people say about Croatian footballers? Obviously a lot of them have great technical skill, but is this really a nickname for them?
I don’t know about Brazilians but Yougoslavian football has always been reputed for his technical skills. If you put Croatians, Serbians, Bosnians together, you have a very good team.

The early goal is what the game needed otherwise it probably would have fizzled out for another 0-0.

Great start for Canada but they’ve just capitulated defensively and lucky to only be going in a goal down.

They're not playing each other though, they did that in the first game (and did draw, actually).

Very good half. Canada have given their best but the difference in quality shone through as the half wore on. Croatia have excellent players, especially in midfield. Some of their football has been beautiful.

A united Yugoslavia without the issues would be a constant threat to win major tournaments.

Look at their 1990 squad,

Pancev, Savicevic, Suker, Prosinecki, Jarni, Stoijkovic, Boksic, Susic, ridiculous attacking talent.

We do. Livaja is great player but not classic number 9. Same goes for Petković. We do have Budimir but he's class below Livaja and Petković.
Livaja and Petko are classy no9s. Can play football, score, hold up play....tbh, i never understood that phrase that we don't have no9. Sure, neither of them are not pure goalscorer but they are fine

don't understand the tactical defensive change by Canada going to 442...croatia finally sorted it out after the opening 20 and just took it to them the rest of the half

Actually the Brazilians of the Balkans were called the players from Romania in the 90's because they were very technical.. Gheorghe Hagi as a prime example.. never heard of the Croats as Brazilians but hey maybe this is an inside call..
The Croatian team in 1998 had Suker and made the semi finals in their first World Cup (post-Yugoslavia) so probably started at that World Cup.

The GTA
Tajon Buchanan was immense. I wonder if any bigger leagues would be interested.

I know but if both get a draw in their respective games then they knock out Belgium and considering how lackluster both Belgium and Canada have been I see no reason why Morocco and Croatia can't shut them out

Good summary so far. Canada Missed their chance against Belgium as they were there for the taking. Croatia just too good for them.

The GTA
Borjan has to stop the first goal.

I knew our keeper and defending would be our undoing.

Let's give it a go here. Come on 2 goals.

IMO Livaja would work best as a free roaming forward, he's great in that free role for Hajduk. Expecting him to play with his back to the goal is taking a lot from his game. He's scored today but is too little involved in overall play, that's why I would like to see him playing off the proper number 9, would elevate his overall game and impact to another level. But for now he's our best number 9 and should start every match, don't want to see Kramarić leading the line ever again.

Makes sense, they were very good in the 90's barely losing on penalties in the quarters 94. Wouldn't surprise me if there are 300 different "Brazilians of ...(region)". We all admire Brazil and rightly so with their history and flair. Kind of like the father of Andre Ayew, NT captain of Ghana, who went by the name Abedi Pelé (real name Abedi Ayew).

Early goal was terrible for Canada as it put them under pressure for the entire half. Nil nil and we'd have seen a more even game perhaps.

True. Thank god they didn’t score a second because we know 2 goal lead is the most dangerous one in football

Never realised Abedi Pele was the father of Andre and Jordan Ayew. That's cool. Quite a talented family.

Gvardiol so composed on the ball and really quick. Not surprising he is so highly rated.

Think Canada are over committing too early, there's still 40 odd minutes left and playing like they are in the last 5.

Few things as exciting as a midfielder who can run with the ball at pace. Canada are leaving space and he is loving it.
It’s the fact that he can also pick a great pass at the end of it too.
