This whole controversy is dumb, the Dutch played it tough, they should be able to take it if the try to dish it out.

Both teams were shithousing each other. Both teams were roughing up each other. I don't get the one sided views

The part about the prisoners and the torture guards both celebrating the World Cup win in 1978 is both a incredible piece of writing and history.
What a story. There was a world cup going on and people were dying few kilometres away...

I agree with your last part. The issue was no time added on in ET, not the 10 minutes. Argentina were wasting time at every opportunity they got.

I love the new directive and hope its applied throughout world football after this.
Makes no sense that Argentina was wasting time in ET when they were far more dominant and agressive. They had about 7 decent chances in the last 15 minutes including Enzo's shot that hit the post. Was their best spell. Dutch were waiting for the shootout.

Yes, it seems innocuous but I suspect the real story is that the media in Argentina is pushing a narrative that Van Gaal hates "Latino" players including Di Maria, Riquelme, Falcao, Chicharito, etc. Strangely, this rumor was started by Luca Toni of Italy a long time ago. Anyway, it filtered down to the players and that explains Messi's celebration in front of Van Gaal which is Riquelme's ghost. Seems ridiculous but whoever said football players were bright.

Martinez intimidation of De Jong was identical to the Dutch keeper's job against Ortega in 98 which resulted in his red card. Ortega later revealed he said something about his mother.

Paredes....well he's just a lunatic probably on steroids.

Who knows what else was said in the match by both sides? Probably plenty.

One picture shows a Dutch player spitting at Messi.

Surprised we don't see more harassing of penalty shooters, as the Dutch did, since apparently there is no punishment.

You missed the entire point of that Twit.

It says "Scaloni's son. Now everything becomes a lot clearer... #Dybala"

It implies Dybala doesn't play because Scaloni knows or suspects he banged his missus.

Jesus he really looks like a mini Dybala.

Dumfried received a red card for that i think.

Salty games you have to play them with blood. For englishmen blood is being a cnut. Strange enough. I saw Giroud mocking Kane after failing his second penalty and Mbappe doing something alike. Englishmen no reaction. I saw in added time an englishmen injuried not going out of the field fast. Took like 2 minutes. I'm not even english and felt really bad.

I was at the game and got to see all the shenanigans which wouldn't have been caught on camera, I'm all for a bit of competitiveness but the behaviour of both sets of players during the penalties crossed the line and personally I feel the Ref lost control of the game.

Imo I think it all started when Paredes punted the ball at the Dutch bench, everything seemed to be on edge after that. Some rough tackles by the Dutch and handbags etc, then you had the argie diving etc.. Again the ref wasn't strong enough, I understand he didn't want to ruin the game but a sending off might have calmed the players down. But they realised they could get away with anything and it just unraveled after that.

With regards to the LVG comments I don't think he said anything offensive, Argies imo are being overly sensitive which is strange given the hard man persona they give off (which is even more funny with all the diving and play acting). I think it may also be a cultural thing with this whole 'respect' issue, everything that can been interpreted as some sort of criticism turns into 'disrespect' and they need to defend their 'honour' in some way.

That's not to say the Netherlands are innocent they have had that shithoussery in them for generations too, with some of dirtiest WC games they've been involved In (Brazil 74, Portugal 06, and Spain 10).

The match against Croatia will be a tense and tight affair. Croatia should control the midfield and have better buildup. Their attack has been wank but they do have athleticism their opponents lack. Argentina on the other hand need to be more composed and get their attack going.

Hard to see either of them really challenging France. I'd have fancied England too had they gotten through.

What they lack in technical department (not counting Messi) they make up in grit, determination and dark arts of football. And in any case quality wise they're not far of from Brazil imo.
It will be a tough, tough match and if they get you in their drill you're toast. On the other hand it seems they're playing on high emotions at the moment and that's a double sword in the sense they could collapse if things wont go their way.
They have Messi, you can close him and think he's stopped only for him to pop out from somewhere and score or make an assist.
We controlled the game vs Brazil in the 1st half and with our midfield trio I expect us to make a good use of the ball.
It will be a different game to Brazil, Argentina is a lot different kettle of fish.

I think your team will be up for the dark arts part of the game, Croatia are not a team that will get bullied and will give it back just as good. You also have similar grit and determination.

Good luck I hope you can pull it off.

Mockery?

He booted the ball at the Dutch bench for no reason.

He should have got a straight red.
20 seconds before the incident, Messi was knocked down by Dutch players two times and the ref did nothing.

Parades tackled these two players then hit the ball to the bench.

Yes, agree, we've done it all and seen it all so wont get bullied for sure. :)
In 2018 it was a fiercy encounter, Otamendi kicked the ball to Rakitić face, Messi and Strinić argued and so on.

Thanks! :)

Yeah I’m predicting a repeat of the 2018 final but what do I know, I only got 25% of the QF results right. (France beating England).

I would have given Argentina the advantage (had they not been dragged into extra time vs Netherlands) due to the fact that Croatia just had 2 120s in a row (I think they will eventually run out of steam personally) but obviously that's out the window.

Think it's a coin toss and it's going to be a "War of Attrition" rather than a feast of footballing splendor.

Nervous so I went down to my local market and bought as much knockoff Argentina merchandise as I could, going full kit wanker.

what I think is that Argentina has one advantage, which is their defense being pretty solid. Practically all the goals we got were all the shots we got on target in all matches. It’s not easy to create changes against us. The team is well organized in defense. We have good muscle at midfield too, and we are far more aggressive than Brazil who let your midfield play with ease.
That being said, we are lacking creativity. What Messi did vs the Netherlands was out of this planet and he won’t do that all the time. The penalty was stupid from Dummies, I mean dumfries. I think Enzo Fernández will need to step up in attack and collaborate. I feel like Lautaro Martinez will be the one that step up for this game too. He’s had a bad World Cup so far, but I hope the last penalty boosted his confidence, he’s perfectly capable of generating goals out of nowhere.
Croatia will control the midfield I fear, but they won’t be as comfortable as last Friday. And if we get to capitalize the chances we create and get ahead in the score line, we can be dangerous with space to run.

anyways, if we can’t go on I really hope you guys win it, you deserve it and Modric is very respected here.

We're similar imo, our backline is solid but we dont create chances easily ourselves. Yeah, I think our midfield will have more trouble against you lot, cause of the muscle and determination you got there. And as you said if you go ahead I smell trouble for us.

Vice versa, Argentina is my 2nd favorite national team, there's something that has always attracted me to that team and the country itself, the passion, madness about football, lots of things, so if you go pass us I'd love you to win the whole thing. :)
If I ever visit the country, La Bombonera and El Monumental I can die the next day happy. :)

Would wear Argentina shirt for the final if we dont go through.

And whatever @RacingClub says, don’t listen to him.

I agree with him, seeing our stadium would ruin all future stadium experiences for you.

It's like your first hit of heroin , you would forever be chasing that high!

On a serious note , you could easily see both in an afternoon depending on opening times etc.

Just seen it, stadiums are 300 metres apart, madness.

Similar to Goodison park and Anfield.

It makes for an intense rivalry.

I was in the stadium for this (close your eyes @IFC 1905 )

I was lucky enough to be in the stadium for this one.

"There is no love lost between these two sides, and that hatred can occasionally boil over and spill onto the pitch in the Avellaneda derby - as it did in February - when both teams were incredibly reduced to nine men by the end of the match.

Racing were immediately plunged into trouble, when goalkeeper Gabriel Arias saw red for using his hands to save a shot outside of the box, and the Academy looked to be dead and buried when Leonardo Sigali was later given his marching orders for a stray elbow.

Down to 9 men the home side dug deep, defended bravely, and on 86 minutes, they took a shock lead, when Marcelo Diaz calmly slotted home from inside the penalty area.

Independiente lost the plot following this killer blow, and their players saw red - twice, in fact. The Red Devils picked up two red cards in the dying minutes as tempers frayed, and fights began to break out all over the pitch.

Pure drama."

It felt as if I had an boa constrictor squeezing the air out of my body for the complete game and that tension was broken in a second..

Which I don't think I'll ever top.

True but their run was piss easy. Wales in the semis too. I think the only good team they played was France in the final and that was when France was still a work in progress towards the 2018 win. Those jammy wins are harder at the WC level and easier at Euros / Copas.
They defeated both France and Croatia in their KO run. Not a great run but a decent one. Beating both of the 2018 finalists, one of them (France) on its home ground.

I read all these comments about Paredes being a prick and all these nasty things so as a PSG supporter, I think I'm a little more informed than most of you here to set things straight.

He's a colossal c*nt.

Ya, Van Gaal said almost nothing. The demand for "respect" is pretty funny and it normally goes with macho cultures. But I think it had to do with that other stuff that the media has been pushing.

Ref could easily have sent Paredes and VVD off and things would have been fine.

I'm wondering what the standard is for dealing with harassment of penalty takers. I guess none.

Van Gaal has said that in 2014 Messi didn't even touch the ball against him. And that Messi doesn't run in defense, basically saying you're playing with 10 in defense with him. I don't know how things work in your cutures, but here in Argentina you don't do your analysis pointing at your rival's weaknesses (you being the team's couch or captain). That's seen as disrespectful. Besides, it's a pretty stupid thing to do honestly, you get nothing good from that, you're even letting your rival know what you think their weaknesses are.

Not to mention that he also said that if they got to penalties they had the advantage and would win. And that Argentina was scared of the Netherlands.

Surprisingly, Croatia's coach said something similar about Messi not running in his press conference. I think and hope that Messi is using all those statements to motivate himself, in a Jordan-esque philosophy.
