Back to goal striker who looks to hold up and play in runners is going to look bad when you can't progress the ball through the middle.
The issue is that striker is clearly out of depth. Not getting involved enough because he can't sense where the loose ball is. Doesn't have the ability to move where his teammates' best passes likely go to.

Him failing his off ball duty hinders the tactic. I's the first phase of possession: making the pitch big. So we're not even in the debate of other players failing to progress the ball.

He won the league at AZ playing counter attacking football from what I've read. And even Steve McLaren managed to win a league with FC Twente a few years later.

I didn't say he was a dinosaur but rather his approach to the game didn't evolve. And that meant he struggled to impose his style against the new breed of managers who were looking to play the game in the opponent's half via pressing and counter pressing.

And I was someone who wanted LVG to replace Moyes. But I was wrong because the landscape in the league was beginning to change and the new breed of manager was starting to become mainstream.
I agree about him having trouble with those traits of football you mention, though tbf many coaches have that :) and thatVan Gaal was not the best coach for United in 2015 (though not many would have done much better under Woodward and that structure I think). Many dismiss Van Gaal, not necessarily you, but I think it proves a fair ability to evolve that you can win Eredivisie with AZ and take Netherlands to a WC bronze with very different kinds of football than you are known for. It doesn’t make him the worlds best coach, but it shows strength, and more flexibility than many credit him for, in my opinion.

When I saw he used the word angry in post match quotes I suggest he's feeling similar to after Brentford game and don't blame him when you see such pitiful starts to both halves

Hope he has his list ready. Of the mass exodus in the summer. He's been somewhat ruthless when it comes to some. He needs to get rid of half this team. Especially if we go into the CL and play against top sides regularly. Players like Harry, Scott, Fred, Lindelof, Martial among others won't cut it, he needs to get rid and get in quality that suits his system, players comfortable on the ball, that midfield needs someone like maxence caqueret.

People here are making too much of this result. It was just one of those nights. At any other we'd have scored 4-5 goals, but just unlucky. We conceded 2 absolutely stupid goals at the start of both halves, but other than that we thoroughly dominated and we had the far better chances.

Let's not forget we were missing our 3 starters, one of which is by far our most important player, as well.

I am making so much because fecked off with drawing on another midweek game where we could have got closer to top two, however just like Palace we blow a big opportunity.

Maybe.

Or it has to do with the schedule, where we have to play against the same team in few days time, with same selection, and this time away. People are discussing the avoidable tactical mistake.

One of which is glaring by starting Weghorst upfront when we can afford not to, and shoehorning Rashford into his worst position. Or subbing Weghorst off halftime is fair enough morale wise rather than waiting until 2 goals down.

At least we have seen enough that ETH is a real quick learner. The away game against Leeds will surely be a win, no doubt about it. Still, a run like the recent games are not good enough.

Got no squad depth and we're playing every 3 days plus we've just won 13 in a row at home so dropping points is going to happen.
That game today had loss written all over it at 2-0 (state the obvious), but the way we came back and some of the stuff we played was promising, we could even say we were unlucky not to win in the end. We did force it a bit too much, but in years gone by we would have folded in similar circumstances.

Like the optimism but I'm not sure. They have the home crowd and we will have to perform well and stay focused defending. Midfield could be an issue again. Definitely don't see it being a walk in the park.

How naive you are, playing at Elland Rd against a team and fans that hate us with a real passion is not surely a win and especially so given they'll likely have a new manager in place which nearly always fires a team up anyway

Hag has some work to do to fix our midfield before the next game, because we did not have one.

It stifled our attack and we did not look secure in back.

Have all the opinions you want, but when they lack perspective they're invalid conclusions. He's been in charge for a little over half a season, and to be where we are now despite unprecedented fixture congestion, having to make the best out of loan signings, and now injuries and suspensions piling up. Some of what we saw today was simply growing pains in continuous implementation of playing style, and believe it or not in less than one fecking season under this manager, players need to develop cohesion in executing this playing style. By all measures we're overachieving this season, and he's the reason.
This - and we're playing great football to boot

We were also "lucky" against Leeds - xG charts 2 - 0.55

Skewed by the fact they played on the counter. We were a bit disjointed and it was a hectic game which suited them more.

I don’t pay attention to Xg personally. For one, I have no idea how it’s calculated.

Getting the best out of Rashford alone, improvement in Dalot, AWB who we all thought was toast, signings have been 80% on point. Definitely overachieving but good signs and we can still get top 4 and win a trophy or 2.

Not mad about the result. I just hope it's the last time he ever starts with WW. Wasted a lot of time with that awful setup. Completely dominated the game once we changed to our original attacking formula.

Another day we would have won. Just learn from this.
Think Wout will keep starting until we get players back fit. Great that Sancho is back and ready to start the next game I'm sure, but unfortunately Antony is now out...
I think it's clear that Ten Hag would hope to pick 3 from Rashford, Martial, Sancho and Antony to start every game, but if 2 of them are out, then it's probably a case where we start Weghorst and leave Pellistri and Garnacho as impact subs.

I worry about Weghorst a bit. In theory he is a sticking point up top but has proven to be anything but thus far. Thought he was especially poor tonight and against Arsenal, where we could have used the pace for the counter attack. I think he's a nice striker to play against for defenders in this moment.

 He can't shield the ball for love or money.
His hold up is really poor. Has to be played to him with inch perfect accuracy for him to even control it.

Without being harsh, Wout is offering next to nothing currently.

I love him and all but I hate his inability to use someone like Sancho on the RW.

I think this shows why he bought Antony - he needs a left footed RW because he won’t use a right footed one unless it’s bloody Rashford.

Yeah Rashford should never be on RW,not even when Antony is out. Maybe try Pellistri there instead rather than someone not comfortable

Sanho was great at LW though.

I think this is why he doesn’t give a chance to pellistri- because he is right footed isn’t it?

He doesn’t want right footed right winger.

Think we have Sancho, Garanacho, And Rashford on the left and Antony, Amad and The unable on the right wing.

I think Pellestri will be sold.

Where does that stuff about him not giving Pellistri chances come from? And after a game in which he actually gave him a chance..

Garnacho, then Pellistri. And it will be Antony if he'll be fit for Sunday. And dare I say we missed him yesterday.
Yup for all the crap Antony gets, he brings balance to the right side of the team.
