The only bit I like about this is that it means we aren’t going to spend all summer chasing DeJong again.

I don't see the point of Murough when Ten Hag keeps picking our transfer targets.

It doesn't infact Whitwell from Athletic who actually is used by United to put transfer news out isn't going big on it with confidence though he is backing his colleague but is still adding lots of caveats for it to happen .
I was just referring to the clip on sky sports, but yeah, I personally don't see it with all that needs to fall in place.

We should just shut down our scouting and recruitment department for good , if we just gonna lean on Manager for our transfers every fecking time .

How much would you pay for him if he had 3-4 years left on the contract? I think 70m in that case makes sense. Currently 40-45m is a more accurate valuation unless there is a bidding war

As @Gavinb33 said, they pick the targets together.

From The Athletic piece on Richard Arnold

He sat in on recruitment meetings, including one that took place after the defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion and lasted several hours. It resulted in those present deciding to go for Casemiro as an alternative target to Frenkie de Jong, who did not want to leave Barcelona.

Ten Hag was joined by Murtough, Fletcher, deputy football director Andy O’Boyle, assistant Steve McClaren, head of recruitment Steve Brown, and interim head of negotiations Tom Keane. “I’m not here,” Arnold told his colleagues, although as the football staff went through the options he did ask why certain players were preferred over others.

They pick them together, the DoF cant go rogue and just buy players that the manager wont play
We keep going for the same profile of players with connections to the Eredivisie. Casemiro was an exception, but do we really need a DoF for picking him?

There won't be a bidding war if Mount is set on move to a specific club with his contract situation he will get his wish .

If more clubs are involved he might be able to negotiate better wages that's about it .

Their description of his strengths is pretty much what I rate about him too.

In terms of what he doesn't do, there have always been question marks about his creativity from open play, with suggestions that a lot of his stats are inflated by set-piece delivery. But fundamentally sound technique, carrying ability, pressing ability and that tactical flexibility go a long way, probably in the eyes of his managers more so than fans who might be drawn to more obvious flair and open play creativity from their nominal attacking midfielders.

If we were intending to use him in the role we currently use Eriksen though, with another AM in Bruno providing most of that creativity from open play, then it's probably less of a concern. And quite a different set-up to the one most will have seem him in with England, where he's often paired with other not particularly creative midfielders.

It still doesn't make him what I would imagine the ideal profile of midfielder to be, mind.
Thanks. Finally a more insightful post. If we can offload McT/Fred for £35M+ then I'm not against signing Mount for £55M. It's all about context.

I wondered when the papers would get round to linking us to Mount. It's a big no from me...

I’m in the minority here but I really like mount. Bad season from him this year but that’s Chelsea as a whole. Didn’t he get chelsea player of the year in both 21 and 22? He’s agile and skilful with a nice goal or two in him. Good attitude and experience of winning trophies too. Still only 24 and ETH obviously looks at him and thinks he can get the best version of him in a United shirt. He will bring squad depth and can play in multiple positions. Good signing I think. Most chelsea fans will tell you how good he can be.

Mount and Rabiot in does make our midfield much better and deeper. But I wouldn't want to pay to much for him.

Bruno, Eriksen and Mount can all play as a 10.

Eriksen, Mount and Rabiot can all play next to Casemiro (Although with different strengths).

Rabiot can also take Casemiros position when needed, especially if he has Mount next to him instead of Eriksen.

I think he’s pretty shit as well this guy will be hard to offload later down the line.

But if ETH wants him then so be it.

Overpriced English player who failed to become a regular starter in a team that's worse than us. What's not to like?

The thing is, if we want a ball playing number 8 on the cheap to take advantage of Chelsea's FFP issue... Kovacic is right there.

If ten Hag wants him I back the move.

Mount is 100% an upgrade over the likes of Fred, McTominay, de Beek and Sabitzer.

£80 mil touted around is a bit much though? £20m more and you could possibly get Rice...

I think he'll be a good signing, he'll produce more than Donny and Fred, he's less error prone, can play different positions.
So the overall squad will be better.

Even that sounds too much when we are talking about Mason fecking Mount. Even on a free, I'd just barely consider him as a squad player. And if it's for the homegrown quota, we can utilize our academy. Speaking of which, I'm 100% sure we can find someone just as good, if not better, than Mount there. If I were one of the youngsters, I'd be pretty demoralized seeing Mount be preferred ahead of me.
This right here shows why the majority of people sit talking crap on a forum and are not out there as managers/players/coaches.

97% of Elite academy players, meaning players from the very top academies fail to go on and make a single premier league or equivalent appearance.

Two years in a row voted Chelsea player of the year, Caf: he is shit.

Caf doesn't disappoint again.

Friend of a mine who's a football analyst for various clubs and a journalist told me a year ago Mount is as close as England has to Modrić in the sense of the way he plays. We were talking about how England doesn't produce those kind of players, technically sound players with a good passing and defensive skill too, but is more about pace and wingers, for various reasons, and mentioned Mount.

Failed to be a starter yet won two player of the season awards with them.

I'm starting to come the conclusion that the reason so many people here dislike Mount so strongly is simply that ye don't actually have any clue what ye're on about.

Mount has been a starter at Chelsea in each of the last three seasons and was their POTY in the last two. And this season he started 20 of their first 24 league games.

So it's just in the three months since the end of February he hasn't been a starter. During which time he's had two injuries, one that laid him off for a month and the other that laid him off until the end of the season.

Don't know if he is a 8 or a 10.

Don't know if he's a top player or just an average one to be honest.

But I won't pay 55M for him for sure !

Him and Rabiot would be sure better than Fred - Mc To - VDB but 55M for Mount is overpriced when most of the team will want to but Maguire for 15M

I've never been a fan of him - I won't go as far as some on here by calling him shit, but I'd prefer Maddison over Mount.

I’m prepared to admit Ten Hag might know a thing or two about this football lark, and probably sees something in him that idiots like me don’t.

It just strikes me as weird. We spent this years transfer budget last year, we’re scraping around signing Burnley’s striker on loan because we’ve got no cash, we need a world class number 9, new goalkeeper, plus several other holes that need plugging with no money - yet we’re about to spend 70m on Mason Mount.

I can only think Ten Hag knows something we don’t, I.e assurances about spending.

Or, its an opportunity that's popped up that the recruitment team don't want to miss out on. It's not often that you get a 24 year old multi-cap England international in the last year of his contract and wanting to leave his current club in a position where we could do with additional strength in depth
