Disagree strongly. I suspect you didn’t watch Lukaku early in his career. If you want to find a carbon copy of Drogba, of course he wasn’t that but the poster essentially said Lukaku was just a finisher and didn’t have the other aspects which I disagree with. Lukaku was incredibly fast and athletic as a younger player and actively tried to copy Drogba in aspects of his game. Just go to YouTube/watch some WBA games. Was he as good as Drogba at it? Obviously not but that’s probably what you’d expect from a teenager/player in their early twenties and also I’d say he was faster than Drogba so he could play off the shoulder a lot more.

The laziness in comparison comes when he changed his game at Everton and yet still even when at United there was a debate about him being a target man. He’d lost all his dynamism and pace by then and, as said, I don’t know what happened but he went from being this rapid, lithe player who was 6feet 3 doing somersaults when he scored to a massive bloke, arguably overweight, who thrived around the box and didn’t do much else.

You’ve just ignored part of my post which suggests to me you might have gone and watched some of his WBA game footage. Google him at Anderlecht, he’s repeatedly referred to as having a similar playing style to Drogba and he references Drogba and Adebayor as his idols. Almost every article you can find on his transfer from anderlecht and also from WBA compares their playing styles. As above, no he’s not exactly the same but they had many similarities compared to almost having none now.
This makes no sense, the entire point is that those comparisons have never made sense. He has never had a similar play style to Drogba, they never had any similarities.

Please just use Google. You’ll see this is incorrect within about 1minute.

You're wrong (on me not watching him). Being incredibly fast is also not something that was part of Drogba's game. He was closer to Eto'o without the workrate if you really wanted to compare him to someone (although he didn't fulfill that early promise) but build-wise he looked like a player that was supposed to play like Drogba, hence the comparisons.

Which is part of the point. He was always compared to Drogba despite their playing styles being very different... for obvious reasons.

and he references Drogba and Adebayor as his idols.
Again, this has nothing to do with him being similar to Drogba. Of course he was his idol, why not?

The best comparison that I have is Mario Gomez, big and fast goalscorers that do not play a physical game at all.

@tomaldinho1 Lukaku got fat in the head and body. Ego too inflated and too many chips is what happened between his early WBA days and now.

I can't think of a single player that "bulked" and got better. Beckham maybe but he didn't bulk in the way these players are today. I can't help thinking they're using aesthetics lifting routines rather than functional ones.

And you pair him up with Lautaro Martinez of all people  Just brutal, has to be up there with the worst attacking duos in history. Wouldn't trust them to bag one in if the game was being played for 2 hours more last night.

Both of them going 2 on 1 against the keeper and my bet is they will feck it up somehow.
If we had a choice this season between Weghorst and Lukaku, who would we pick? As crappy as the Belgian has been, I'd go with him. I know its not saying much.

He was absolutely nothing like Drogba. The comparisons were just incredibly lazy. A lot of Drogba’s game revolved around his aerial dominance, which has always been something Lukaku struggles with.

I think its just boils down to them both being black, very physical and both them being strikers with ties to Chelsea. Otherwise they have almost nothing in common.

....Him blocking Di Marco's header was poor positioning and typical Lukaku though. It looks bad, although he hardly prevented a sure goal: Dias was right behind him and the header wasn't powerful. Hard to tell where the ball was heading...
100% true. I am no fan of Lukaku but the grief he is getting on the block and it being a surefire goal is over the top. Dias would have cleared the ball off the line.

Lukaku looks big but not very physical imo. I still remember playing for us he usually lost the ball because some defender outmuscled him.

Lukaku has been an arsehole in recent years, so its fun to take the piss out of him, but i can't help thinking if the roles for the first chance had been switched you'd have Lukaku getting the bulk of the criticism for not being calm enough to direct the header slightly, or bring it down with his chest instead.

Lukaku does the right thing by moving forward in anticipation of the keeper getting a hand to the first header, or a rebound from the bar...he just doesn't get the positioning quite right and it goes slightly over his head. Slim margins of a not too different angle of rebound and he has a good chance to score the follow-up header (or makes himself an even bigger laughing stock by missing at close range again).

Dimarco has a couple of seconds to take in everyone in front of him between the first header and going for the second, not much, but it is enough to register where Lukaku is and that he has space in front and to the left.

He then does what a lot of players (especially non forwards) even great ones would do in the same quick reactions, very high stakes situation, and instinctively lunges into an undirected header. I think it's just a chance where maybe 70% of players it ends up the same way, but you'll have a not insignificant number of players with the poise, finishing and penalty-box awareness (and good enough in the air) to either score with a better header, or control it with their torso for the easier close range shot.

Zlatan is a good example. He was always tall but in Ajax he was not particularly very big and couldn't boss defenders around like he did later.

I think Ibra clearly got worse when he bulked in Milan too.

His best seasons are probably his final 2 at Inter.

I think he actually reproduced that level (if not better) with PSG, but even though they were too strong for Ligue 1 (including the rich Monaco of that period) they didn’t have a strong enough team to win the CL. They were always 1/2 injuries to key players (Motta, Silva) away from trouble.

Is it wrong to say god bless the Saudis if they bail us out of this Lukaku problem?

Not to mention mindset aswell.

Drogba saw competition for his place as a challenge to overcome while Lukaku saw it as a reason to sulk and rage quit. And I don't think I need to mention their contrasting records in big games.

I always saw him as bigger and stronger version of Javier Hernandez when he was there, but not as good with his runs. Gomez is probably a better comparison

Has a footballer peaked earlier and then regressed quite like him? When he was on loan at WBA, he looked like he was going to become a reliable 25+ a season goal getter even if his style is not your cup of tea.

Saudi's the best move for everyone, he won't fit in back with us and I don't think Inter can afford either his transfer fee or wages.

Tbf he's had 20+ goal seasons 7 times, 25+ goal seasons 5 times and 30+ goal seasons twice (at Inter where he won the title)

Bent's best scoring numbers were probably a division shorter than the premier league though.
I'm not sure if understand your point. Bent best scoring season is 24 goals in the PL, his second best is 18 goals. Lukaku best PL season is 25 goals and second best 18 goals.

It will be criminal if any club bail Chelsea out of the shit by taking Lukaku off their hands. They should be made to suffer the consequences of their 100m mistake.

Thank you for sharing that. Goretezkas transformation is an example of what I'm referring to. In the article you linked is the following quote:

Speaking to Goal, Neustadter said: "After I've seen his development, I wrote to him directly to send me the exercises he was doing!

"Even at Schalke we saw that he has the physical abilities to build muscle mass without harming his game.
Goes on to mention a balance between muscle mass and being lean. A lot of players, like Lukaku, are bulking without these considerations and winding up slower and hurting their game. I wonder if they're trying to do so w proper coaches or maybe that's who the issue is to begin one. Lukaku was allowed to eat crap while ar United and then Conte forced him to eat more greens. So perhaps the sports science support isn't as strong
