The details are even more horrifying than the headlines.

Yousef al-Manasif, who was between 15 and 18 years old at the time of the alleged offense, was sentenced to death by the Specialized Criminal Court (SCC) in November 2022. According to his charge sheet and verdict, which Amnesty International reviewed, al-Manasif was convicted on several charges including: “Seeking to disrupt the social fabric and national cohesion, and participating and inciting sit-ins and protests that disrupt the state’s cohesion and security.” His family said they were not allowed to see or visit him until over six months after his arrest, during which time they said he was held in solitary confinement. The appeals court upheld his sentence in March 2023.

Yeah but have you ever thought that the English government is no better, Ineos are sportswashing and that the press only care when it's United.

You have to respect their culture though. You can't force your Western views on others!

Ah the age old trick of using anti social harmony / national security threat against protestors and dissenting voices

Typical fascist tactic

But, if anything, the fact that they own Newcastle has brought this to more people's attention as opposed to washing their image? That guy would likely not be tweeting it and it wouldn't be posted on this section of redcafe.

In relation to the article, it is absurd that something like this is deemed worthy of death. Even when you read these stories it's almost hard to believe that this is real life...same goes for all sorts of barbaric atrocities we commit across the globe.

Yeah, sure. But the UK used to beat up kids and execute 'em too.

Not to mention the iPhones and the whatnot.

Hypocrisy of the highest order to even mention this, to be honest.

Thankfully it has been posted now. Otherwise how would we be aware of this type of issues. Eye opening. I am sure this will motivate a lot of Redcafe posters to change their vote from Qatar to Ineos.

So in a way these brave souls are sacrificing themselves for a greater cause?

Nah.

People have been bringing this stuff to our attention for decades and beyond. People just choose to ignore it for one reason or another as it doesn't effect them. Now it does effect people, whether they like it or not, they find new ways to justify it or as before, just ignore it anyway.

That is an interesting point I have also thought about for a bit. But in the end public image is only a small part of sports washing. It is also about creating dependencies. And it is about creating connections. Getting into the room with the right people. Create an environment wherein favors and bribes can easily be exchanged. Get important people do your bidding. Public image doesn't even have to improve for sports washing to be effective. It is enough to have people dependent on you so they defend you when criticism is voiced.

Maybe English football got irreparably tainted by accepting blood money from authoritarian regimes, but at least we got City total domination and the most boring league in decades in return.

I'm sure their families are eternally grateful to Newcastle United for what they've done (getting bought, I mean- it's been invaluable).

Now, now. We can't expect them to follow Western culture despite buying Western clubs in a Western country. Do you think this is a dictatorship?

Ask yourself, do you think it's appropriate?
Asking rimaldo to gauge the appropriateness of something is like asking a dog to explain quantum physics.

That's way out of order. Poor dogs don't deserve that.

Allies of the British government? The ones we send weapons to and train their military, essentially sanctioning warcrimes in places like Yemen?
I'm as much against that as I am their involvement in sport.

Letting these people take over world sport, let alone get stick their fingers in our beautiful game is nothing short of a disgrace.

And before anyone jumps on "these people" you know exactly who I am talking about.
I honestly don’t. Who are these people?

Well, consider this for a moment.

What colour are those about to be executed? And if what you're trying to imply carried any weight, why would I have an issue with it if I had a problem with people's colour?

So with that in mind, and the content of the tweet and article, who do you think "these people" are?

I’ve not implied anything. You stated “Letting these people take over world sport”. You can’t be referring to Saudi Arabia. They own one club in the premier league. Not sure Newcastle classifies as all the sports in the world. So still not sure who you’re referring to.

Middle Eastern owners who own countries with human rights issues.

How can you possibly not infer that?

You'd think he meant "Middle Eastern rulers of states"?

It buys you an army of sycophants who now turn a blind eye/actively defend these things.

Clearly the Saudis and to avoid confusion, the ruling class. They are without question the worst of the worst.

And have you been living under a rock the past few years? Surely you don't think it's just Newcastle? Boxing, Golf.

If these people can buy a football club who exactly is not allowed to?
Ah the old fit and proper persons test and due diligence working like a dream.

This story is unspeakably grim. I'm struggling to wrap my head around the fact that a regime who's killing teenagers for protesting were allowed buy a PL club.
