Why is there such an obsession with a 30 year old Kane? Our manager seems to prefer younger players (which in itself is fine), and operating off a limited budget, Hojlund is a decent choice

His legs could be going, or he could turn out to be like Ibra and score goals galore until he’s 38. Point is, spending 100 million £ on him would be crazy.

The same reason our greatest ever manager signed a 29 year old RVP, guaranteed goals!

Even SAF would not have performed miracles under similar circumstances

not only that there is a real shortage of top class strikers and the few that are, outside our current shopping range. Heck even average strikers are being quoted for 100m.

I don’t think you can lay the blame on Ten Hag or Murtough and his team. Lay the blame on the owners who can’t make quick decisions when it comes to money. Sooner they are gone the better
Oh absolutely mate. This is 100% on the Glazers. ETH and Murtough are doing a fantastic job this summer with their hands financially tied behind their backs.

It’s just very concerning that Rashford was our only consistent goal scorer last season and we could be going into the new season with no recognised striker leading the line.

Yes, Kane at 30 is not worth £100 million, but the 30-40 goals he’d likely score could be the difference between winning a PL or CL or finishing outside the top5.

Think a lot of that is to do with the fact we still want to him but don't want to Spurs thinking we haven't other options

I think it was more a case of Liverpool and Chelsea drastically underperforming. I expect those two to be better, what with City and Arsenal up there, possibly Newcastle again, we could just miss out.
If I had to guess I’d say we finish 5th or 6th next season. The amount of games we played last season will catch up with our players.

Real Madrid spend 40m on 17 year old Vinicius Junior when he has hardly even kick a ball in any top level games. They also spend around the same (40m) on 18 year old Rodrygo, who has only scored 17 goals in 80 games in Brazil league.

Sometimes when you see talent, you have to buy them earlier before they turn into another Haaland or Osimhen, and eventually become unattainable even at very high price.
Also, Luka Jovic for 60 Million Euros. Real Madrid isn't afraid to take risks.

Real Madrid is a bad example. They can always do these kinds of deals as they are loaded with cash. They wasted 150m on Hazard . We dont have unlimited funds so that's my concern.
Indeed, yet we desperately need a top striker. Problem is top strikers cost £100m+ these days.

So maybe we should scout around and take a punt on a cheaper, younger unproven striker with the potential to become a top striker?

Like Hojlund maybe?

We actually underperformed our xG by about 7 goals last season, which I believe would’ve gotten us closer to second place, if we had been on par with our xG.
By contrast both Arsenal and City overperformed their xG by c. 14 goals.

I agree that xG are not everything, but we clearly saw last season that our inability to score actually allowed opponents to get back into games and put us under pressure.
Don't know where you get those stats from, but Understat have us at xG of 71.90 for the last season. With 58 goals scored, our xG difference was shocking +13.90 meaning that we should have scored at least 14 goals more.

With Vicious and Rodrygo, Madrid could afford to play them 3 seasons with average 35+ games each, before they bear any fruit in their 4th season.

Unless you're fine with that kind waiting time with our potentially new striker.

Well we sort of have to be in this market. The striker market is incredibly slim pickings right now. The only two probable guarantees in Osimhen and Kane have been priced out. So what do you propose as an alternative? Not buy a striker at all?

We definitely overperformed: virtually no one predicted us making top four.
Yes no one predicted Liverpool being so poor and Chelsea struggling to make top half of the table. That doesn’t make us over performers.

Yeah creating chances wasn't the problem on the whole, but we only had Rashford to rely on finishing then regularly.

I’d say you make a strong point plus there will be teething problems with a new GK and playing in a slightly different way, however ETH has a win rate in the PL only bettered by Pep in his first season, which means he’s a fast learner like Pep. After a shaky start, I think we’ll settle and marginally improve to 24/25 wins from 38, I don’t think we’ll lose 9 either probably 6 or 7 So with at least 3 or 4 key players this summer and another 2 or 3 in winter, ETH may improve 75 points to 80-82 which will be top 3 again.

I think Hojlund would be good for at least 14 goals if he was first choice. He was scoring an average of 0.44 goals per 90 minutes in the league last season, so it's not big jump.

It's so frustrating when people say we over performed. The team had some obvious deficiencies in some areas, but maybe we just hired a good manager that actually managed to get a tune out of a team that still has some really good players in it?

I also don't think Liverpool and Chelsea underperforming is that much of a shock. Boehly really screwed the pooch when he took over and they signed too many players. Liverpool went big on Nunez instead of revamping their midfield, probably because they thought they could get Bellingham if they waited a year. Their gambles didn't pay off, whereas ours did.

Oh I’d love Kane but even if we free up wiggle room I can’t see us spending 100m on him when he will be free next summer. I suspect we will bring in another forward after we have sold one or 2

I wouldn’t be surprised that we bring in an experienced striker in addition to Rasmus Højlund as per Laurie Whitwell report, but this will probably be dependent on a couple of sales.

If ETH pushes like he did Antony, and if the funds are there to use, then I really feel like we'd go for this year. Some pretty big ifs in there however.

Yeah, based on xG difference only Everton (+14.65) were worse than us in front of the goal.

Also, with Onana instead of DDG, I truly think that our xG could actually increase as his playing style will give us more periods of sustainable possession aka "control", which will lead to even better chance creation, rather than relying heavily on turnovers.

Theoretically, I feel any decent reliable finisher, let alone elite strikers like Kane and Osimhen, could flourish in those circumstances and help us close the gap for the next season.

How does he rate in the following?

1) Be a presence (reading and making of the actual space/runs) in the box for low and head height crosses at the near post and the penalty spot.
Above average

2) Aerial long balls from the defenders/Onana with his back against defenders i.e strength, heading, judging the flight of the ball etc.
Above average

3) Running off the shoulder of defenders from long balls/passes/through balls.
Above average

4) First touch and hold up play when given to him to feet with his back against defenders.
Average

5) Passing in short and tight spaces.
Below average

6) All round game intelligence to get himself and others involved.
Average

7) Work rate.
Above average

8) Ability to create chances for himself/dribbling and ball carrying.
Above average

9) Finishing when given the ball in those 'typical' penalty box chances.
Average

I think if he ranks average or above in most of these, he'll do fine. He'll get chances from our players and he'll create them simply by being there in the right places.
I've given my assessment above. Hopefully, he improves in the areas where he's currently lacking but untill then, I don't see him as a first choice striker for Manchester United.

We would need SIGNIFICANT sales and Kane to really do everything to push for move,my gut feeling is that it was always a no go with ownership farce still going on

Yeah but we were told at the time that deal had repercussions to this years budget. Unless we do sales there is no wiggle room

I personally haven’t seen much of him but he certainly fits in with the age and price profile given our budget constraints, could potentially be a great stop gap whilst Højlund who has just turned 20 in February gains a couple of years experience in the PL without the expectations of hitting the ground running immediately.

The alternative is for Rashford to rotate with Højlund upfront IMO If we can’t find someone that fits in with our budget.

From The Athletic which got it from Opta, but I also read 14 xG difference from other sources

But everyone now knows that was basically a last hurrah signing, we shouldn’t be signing players that might help us challenge for a year or two we should be signing players that can potentially help us challenge for a decade

I do get Haaland vibes but i worryingly get Nunez vibes too.
He seems to be a lot more in control and less chaotic than Nunez? Not that one way or the other yields more or less goals. But I don't get Nunez vibes.

From his highlights I can also see he’s somewhat of a poacher, at the right place at the right time. Something we’ve missed a lot and with Bruno creating the number of chances he does, it’ll be good to a striker who can get those ugly tap ins
