I have to question why we were in such a rush to bring him in if he was injured. Could have saved money and prioritized Amrabat
is there a chance that the arrival of an injury player was the reason for Hojlund delay in being unveiled and that the deal had to be adjusted in some matter as a result ?

Whether people like it or not I genuinely think Greenwood will play for us this season.

The fact Utd are leaving it this late to make an announcement about his situation suggests we want to keep him and utilise him. If he was going out on loan he would have gone by now and there would be no official announcement. There would be more noise around clubs being interested too. The fact we are going to release a statement or announcement suggests he’s staying. So yes I think he will be one of the options but not for the first few weeks until he gets match fitness.

I think it might be longer than a few weeks even if you're correct. A long time playing no competitive football. It's everything, physical fitness, mental fitness and dealing with whatever furore it would create, in match technical sharpness. I honestly don't think Christmas would be too conservative in estimating a timeframe before he's actually useful.

This is it, if we were loaning him there would be no announcement and if he was getting jettisoned the announcement would have been way sooner.

Very obvious the investigation was actually just into what the sponsors and social media would tolerate.

Really hope he doesn't, It will be impossible for me to cheer him on or even be happy if he scores. Really a persona non grata for me that little cnut.

A backup striker would be nice but it's not the end of the world.

This fella is being relied upon and that's all there is to it. ETH isn't viewing him as a young, inexperienced striker he needs to baby. Look at his words. You don't say he is the one we've been waiting for just to put him on easy street. He didn't take the pressure off with that statement, he made clear how he views him, if the fee wasn't already obvious enough. Apart from when he's talking about transfers ETH is very direct and straight forward, so take it for what it is.

For the backup role we still have a combination of Martial and shifting Rashford into the role and playing Garnacho who is extremely talented and needs game time. Sancho is a real desperation choice, I don't like that. But I guess at a push.
Yeah we should have got a cheap experience backup striker because Rashford is better wide and Martial is a sicknote

He’s got a slight injury, he’s not lost a leg, and you’re the first person to call our pursuit of him a rush
He's also not even injured anymore - it's a question of he picked up something slight with Atalanta before meaning he just isn't match fit currently :wenger:. The articles already said he'd still be training

Why does he need several weeks to get match fit, if he is already training?

Must admit, I'm getting a bit confused about the Hojlund situation.

As far as I can work out: he played in a few PSF's for Atalanta. So has some pre-season behind him. An injury issue showed up in the medical, so he can't play in either of this weekends friendlies. But he's no longer injured, and is in full training with us?

If all of that is accurate, given that we've got 9 days or so until our first game - will he be fit to be in the matchday squad, just not match fit enough to start? Or is he not going to be available at all for the first few games?

Kind of crazy we are a week from the new season and they haven't announced if MG is coming back, being sold or being loaned out.
It’ll be announced on Friday 11th. Mark my words.

All managers will be having their press conferences ahead of the first game. Media will be running around busy trying to cover it all. Team news etc

United will briefly announce on the website on Friday afternoon, after ETH has finished his press and disappeared, that Greenwood is being integrated back into the academy to commence training.

It will get some attention of course, then everyone will be busy over the weekend following all the games. Burnley are playing City on Friday night, so that will take the initial heat off on Friday night, then a busy weekend full of first games.

United play on Monday night, so we can avoid the first wave of attention. Sure ETH will likely be asked a few questions on Monday night, but everyone is busy getting home from work etc and Monday night coverage just isn’t the same as weekends.

Yep, with his reintegration it was going to be announced at a time we can bury the feck out of it, I imagined it would come tacked on to a signing announcement and have him start games in America to take the heat away from the squad but this strategy is the next best option they have.

We're not selling Martial, so just give him injections and send him out there

Yeah, this sounds extremely plausible. I think MG/his team will accompany it with some kind of individual statement though, maybe over the first round weekend..

You don't get match fit from training.
Actually you do.

All of the intense cardiovascular work in all sports, like football, the NFL, etc, is done in pre-season training. It's called 'match fit' not because you get fit during the match but because you arrive at the requisite level of cardiovascular development to be counted match fit when the match arrives.

This is why, in pre-seasons, so much emphasis is placed upon high-intensity short sprint intervals immediately upon returning to training, because it is the best and quickest way to reach a point of being able to play for a full 90 minutes. It's not the playing of the matches that gets you physically ready to play matches; it's the high intensity cardio work with elite level personal trainers in training get you 'match fit'.

This is also heavily emphasised in the Hard Knocks series about NFL training camps. The work you do with the PT's are the main work of arriving at match fitness. Matches are more about tactical cohesion, team fluidity. Elements of mental and intellectual coherence.

Can't believe we're benching him for weeks to cover up Murtough and Arnold's incompetence.
Please bite
Actually, they're more likely in this together with Ten Hag to force the Glazers to realize that United desperately need a back-up striker. They might even make the team lose a game or two on purpose during Højlund's absence just for that. Trying hard with the conspiracy theory here.

Being "match fit" is not just about being physically fit. Matches are played at a different intensity to training in that they're not planned out in terms of when you are at high intensity and when you take your breaks.
Anyone who's played football will tell you training is not the same as playing a game. Personally, I need about three-four games before I can really play a full game without having to seriously think about when I'm running and when I'm not.

Well, if he's not available for a few weeks, that's hardly 'slight'.

He's going to get so much patience from me. I've heard alot about his physical attributes so that's a great start for life in the prem and I've heard he's mentally assured which will help him at a club like ours.

Not expecting any ridiculous numbers from him this upcoming season but it will be fascinating to see how he develops under ETH, who clearly see's the potential.

Still hoping we get a cheap one but think the odds are virtually zero of it happening

We could / should have announced it today, 30 mins before announcing Hojlund.
Only 1 week left before season starts.

HIIT (Sprint interval training) is designed to replicate match intensity sprints and endurance in repeated blocks of training sessions. It's the training that brings the athlete to the match ready to engage in match sprint intervals.
