Are people blaming him for goals today ? Wow !!

With this fan base attitude, we won't win a thing!

Rewatch DDG his last game for Manchester United and you wont be asking yourself that question. Prime DDG might have stopped it but last season DDG his shot stopping wasnt really all that special anymore.
Prime DDG is one of the best shotstoppers ever, maybe the best ever, the last 5 years dull the impact of how good he was in that aspect at one point. Onana is never going to be that good, but his all round game is better suited to the modern game. If his shotstopping ends up not to the mark then they will have to get or develop another keeper with the same ball playing qualities.

Arsenal didn't press. That's why we were dominating possession, but it was all in our third of the pitch. We had no idea how to get through them apart from when they got stretched and we could use our counter, which is all we've got these days.
They tried to press but it wasn't effective because of Onana. Very clearly. Last season they pressed us to shit and battered us in play and chances. Today it was not the case, as their press was ineffective. That is all on Onana.

We could have bought Rice or Caicedo with Onana and Mount's money. Then use Amrabat money for Pavard or CB.

I think that would better for the team.

Then maybe sign a midfield first. He isn't that good in the air either, so far..
Well it is what many of us said prior to signing a keeper but were here now and we need to find a way of using the advantage he gains for us

Yep exactly. We were far more composed today in the first two thirds of the pitch than in the same fixture last season.

The 3-2 at Emirates last season, we couldn’t even get out our own half.
It's actually painful that people can't see that. Like if Evans doesn't feck up on that corner, Onana is walking away with a motm award for me and yet.... Nonsense.

Having Amrabat instead of Casemiro collecting the ball should help a lot.

Also this version of de Gea wouldnt save the goals, we would also have been constantly pressed and never gotten anywhere

We don't have the legs to run the midfield plus we look incredible disjointed in passing and moving. It's like as soon as we get the ball all players stand still we make it really easy for the opposition to close the passing options.

All I’ll say is De Gea was never anything less than a top keeper for us. He wasn’t the best in the world towards the end, but replacing him with this guy who has little pedigree to be honest, was a huge gamble. It’s a gamble that won’t pay off or otherwise after 4 games though. Give him time.

De Gea, even at his best, wasn't great at getting down quick. A weak spot of his. It's why he used his feet so much.

At his very very best we've seen him save similar deflected shots.

But that was a long time ago when he was literally there best shot stopper on the planet. So it's not a standard I'll hold Onana too

Wow, some really impressively bad takes today. If you cant see the difference in our ability to beat the press and play out from the back with Onana vs previously, you must be watching another game to me. He wasnt at fault for any of the goals, and his distribution is world class.

I genuinely dont know what more people wanted from him today.

I said a few weeks ago that the jury was out for me on him, but I thought he was very good today. I see the point about him controlling play and helping us play out from the back, he was very reassuring and a good outlet to slow the game and take pressure off.

Unlucky for the second goal, harsh to apportion any blame imo, although I’m not surprised to see those comments as it’s very close.

Lots of justified criticism regarding his movement or lack thereof it when facing 1 vs 1s. I had hoped it was better than this but it doesn't bode well.

However, agree with what others are saying. He's massive for us on the ball and you'd bloody hope that we'll start utilising by having more on the ball players in front of him like Amrabat.

I thought he played very well today. We'd have seriously struggled without him. If Garnacho was onside, his critics in this thread would be hailing him the new Buffon.

De Gea saves that Rice goal IMO but that doesn't mean Onana wasn't decent. He's just not as good a shot stopper.

Great playing out from the back but terrible shot stopper compared to De Gea. We solved one problem but now have a different one.

Whether on balance it will be overall an upgrade only time will tell.

Because for once we managed to control most of the ball away from home to a top side for large portions of the game purely because of this guy. Or is a keeper ‘ just for savings shots!!’. De Gea saves none of those goals anyway.
. Having ball playing gk is a nice thing but some people really go over the top.
And yes, i expect from Man Utd gk to save shots. That is main job for gk.

His distribution was excellent but he probably should've done better on the Rice goal.

Last season the story was we kept all those clean sheets in spite of De Gea. The goalkeeper isn't that important people said.

Now a few goals are going in, it's the keeper?

The team lost their heads after the VAR call. The Rice goal was a defensive calamity, where even poor Jonny Evans is getting all the blame despite being one green shirt without the zone of 3 Arsenal players whilst being manhandled by one of them. Fickle.

Thought this was very evident today. There was a clear reluctance on Arsenal's part to be as aggressive in their press, which helped ease the pressure on us a lot.

However, that doesn't negate any criticism people have about any other aspects of his goalkeeping.
What is he talking about? Arsenal wasn't reluctant at all on high press.

I was a big ddg fan and it is clear to see the upgrade he makes on the ball it's just our midfield isn't good enough to use the advantage.
I don't think that midfield is the problem. It is full backs. AWB went with long balls often today instead passing the ball. With ball playing gk you need fb strong on the ball too.

Clearly a worse shot stopper than DDG.

Obviously in a different galaxy when it comes to passing, but I'm yet to see the big value in playing it out from the back. Our play seems to stagnate after we've passed the ball beyond the first "wave" of pressure, and we just hoof it to either of the flanks without much luck. But maybe this too is just a matter of being patient and trusting the process.

But so far I think the change in GK has been a net loss considering DDG would probably have saved a few of the goals we've conceded so far.
In 2014? Sure
Likewise I can saythe ones onana has saved, ddg would have probably let them all dribble under his body

Unless you're actually suggesting retaining a guy that no top or mid team have gone out to get even though he's freely available for a month or so

Not blaming. Neither goal is his fault. But it is fair to expect that Man Utd gk saves some tougher shots.
Which tougher shots are we talking ? Second goal had a deflection, first and third - no chance any GK is Saving.

I think people have to realize that judging Onana by the De Gea shot stopping standard is extreme, De Gea for a long period of his Utd career was making saves that only a handful of keepers in history could make, you can fall short of that standard and still be a exceptional keeper.

Oh come on with that "no chance that any gk is saving that". Every shot can be saved. Which again doesn't mean that gk is guilty for the goal.

You need to see the bigger picture. Our defensive unit was one of the best last season, if you check. Our problem all along is midfield control and finishing chances. All the money should go addressing those immediate concerns. I think that's just common sense.

Even spending 150m in one player in Osinhem would be a better spending on addressing the concern, and we still have some money left to get Amrabat at 30m.

I think people are just reacting to how De Gea was treated last season, win or lose there was always a couple pages dissecting everything De Gea or didn’t do during the game and many posters saying « he’s only making saves I expect any keepers to make ».

To me the jury’s still out on Onana. He was brought in to help us play from the back but my feeling last season and my feeling with Onana is that its more on the onfield players than the keeper. Now with Hojlund and Amrabat we have players who are able to keep the ball, whether the keeper playing long or short.

On his goalkeeping abilities, I have mixed feelings, some good saves, some strange decisions and positioning especially on 1v1. He doesn’t look too settled though so I’ll give him the benefit of time

Happy with him. He's a great outlet to pass to when under pressure and he doesn't bottle under the press. Rashford's chance at the 77th(?) minute all came from an Onana pass to Martinez after Martinez's player decided to close down Onana.

And we are five games into this season and are missing varane, Shaw, and possibly now Martinez and lindelof along with malacia.

If we had the same defensive unit, with onana instead of ddg, we see the improvement hence why we did it, for the bigger picture

Not being able to move on Maguire and Bailly, and get a replacement, not being able move on mct and vdb to bring in another cm is obviously an issue. Eth clearly wanted that and wanted to address the midfield issues.

Onana is a good signing, one for long term and doesn't affect the other areas which need addressing.

It does in today’s game. Where the other aspects of his goalkeeping were perfectly fine.

Surely nobody here is blaming him for the second goal? Massive deflection.

A big part of the reaspn we were in the game up until the 2nd goal was due to Onana's presence on the ball. Those blaming him for the second goal seriously need to re-evaluate their football takes.
