It's weird actually, it's been so one and off at Ajax this century. A couple of good periods interspersed with mindboggling randomness. I mean, Ajax appointed Martin Jol as coach as some point! That's the sort of random stuff I expect from PSV, who never seem to have such a clear direction in the first place - or Feyenoord back when they coupled no money with no vision.
What's wrong with Odido (apart from the silly name)?
They called him the diamond eye at Dortmund and that's what he's been doing at Stuttgart, too. He started there after they had gotten relegated and they won promotion despite having to extract €55m from the squad in fees. Signing players such as Kalajdzic, Kobel, Endo and Silas (was valued €25m on TM, before he tore his ACL) in 2. Bundesliga. After promotion they had a quiet window, where they mostly made some previous loans permanent and signed Mavropanos for peanuts. But then Corona hit and in the following summers they had to extract €25m, €35m and €30m in net transfer fees from the squad that was newly promoted to begin with. They were cutting it close with relegation a bit, but I think he deserves a lot of credit for creating so much value with his transfers, that they were able to have a competitive and talented squad and adding further promising players, despite being forced to create massive transfer profits each year.
As a parting gift he signed Vagnoman, who will probably fetch them at least a €10m profit once he matures a bit, Ito, who was signed for €400k from J-League and is curently rated €10m on TM and Guyrassy, who saved their necks last year and currently leads the league with 8 goals in 4 games - he got him on a "free" loan with a €9m buy option.
He's reportedly quite opinionated and can be a bit hard to work with, he also strikes me as more of a Klopp fan than Cruyff worshipper but when I heard the news I thought he could still be a great fit: him coming up with bargains from obscure clubs and Ajax/Eredivisie being the perfect incubator to pump up their value. Creating some massive transfer revenues that would eventually also strengthen the (more stable, long term) core of the team.
But he was always a scout right? Not a DoF? He apparentally ignores the trainer conpletely and just buys his own players instead. Which could ofcourse be fine. But some of the people he signed (like Akpom or Mannsverk) look absolutely arse so far.
At Dortmund he was head scout under Zorc, at Stuttgart he was the DoF.
His transfers are mostly obscure / low rated players, so it's inherently high risk / high reward. A bunch of them will flat out flop, but the idea is that there will be a couple of hits that more than make up for it. So some €6m signing from Molde not working out is probably part of the calculation. Akpom, being 27 years old and costing €12m probably not so much.
If there's indeed no agreement at all on transfers with the coach, then I'd say he just hired the wrong coach.

Ever since they let Overmars go, they are a mess. Nobody of their leadership is any good to build a proper side and managerial appointments after ETH have been woeful. Letting some young players leave/loan out and bring in questionable players.
100% agreed that last season with VDS and Hamstra in charge it was a shitshow in all aspects of recruitment. While SM’s signings so far haven’t been great, it’s far too early to write them off yet, and he has had a successful track record wherever he goes. I’ll give them some time to gel before making concrete exclamations, but early returns are not promising, and for me personally since I haven’t seen any of the new signings in action previous to Ajax, I can’t definitely point to a talent gap or management gap. Having said that, I think everyone who regularly watches the ED and/or posts in this thread immediately questioned why Steijn was brought in from a tactical aspect. I’m not sure that fell under SM’s purview though. Even with all that, I’m not sure how much of the blame is to fall on him. A lot of the games I watch, they just constantly make silly errors at the back, and it’s not like there’s that much depth where you can shake things up like you would at financially larger clubs. I don’t think anyone expected Kudus to be replaced like for like, but I think he papered over a lot of cracks last season with his brilliance, and now it’s extremely telling just how good he was.
Ajax has started an investigation into a possible conflict of interest in one of Mislintat's deals to see if he has disadvantaged Ajax in favour of a player's representation that is also a shareholder in one of Mislintat's private companies.
I guess he doesn't just look like a bond villain...

The article reads like he has violated corporate governance in quite an obvious way and I guess that could have far reaching consequences if Ajax want that. But does anyone believe a 3% stake in a company of which Mislintat himself "only" owns 35% is enough to make him risk it all and in such an easily traceable way? Sosa for €8m looks like a bargain, too - unless they went completely overboard with the wages.
Mostly reads like a blunder more than fraud. Sosa wasnt expensive, but it was very weird to buy a 4th LB whilst having 0 right wingers.
Updated now. He apparently told Sosa to change representation (to the guy he's in business with) 1 day before the deal.
That makes it look substantially worse.
And now Sosa's former agent is about to sue Mislintat.

Yeah, him and Sutalo seem to be the only non rubbish signings of the window so far. Though the timing was weird, Ajax definitely didn't need another left back on deadline day. They spend 12.5 million on Avila as well and still have Salah-Eddine as a back-up whilst Jorrel Hato can play there as well and there are 0 right wingers. Literally none.
This is a very dumb thing to say, but if we don't beat Ajax on Sunday we should be ashamed of ourselves.
