I want to know who's idea it is to have him step on the ball and wait forever to play any sort of pass. 90 percent of time it just leads to more pressure and him hoofing the ball deep 5 seconds later once he gets the pass back. I don't know if that is what EtH is telling him to do or what he is choosing to do
It’s a common tactic (and has been done for years) to beat a press. You force the forward onto you and if their support goes with them you play it long, if they come alone you just pop it off to a defender and you’re away.

I like Onana but the AFCON would be a mistake if he goes.

I really don’t think he has enough credit in the bank and we are in a good enough position in the table for the first team keeper to just leave for an extended time.

All while we are paying his wages in his first season after a huge transfer. It’s not exactly a blue print for success is it.
I see this statement being made by some but in reality, he hasn't got a choice as he's officially been called up for the tournament. If he rejects the call-up to play for United, all Cameroon has to do is file a dispute with FIFA and Onana will not be able to play for United during the duration of the tournament. Likewise, United could be fined/deducted points if they do not release him.

I get the idea but we don't execute it or have the players who are confident enough with the ball to execute that. Hence I said 90 percent of the time it just gets hoofed up anyways

Onana was retired from internationals due to his falling out with the coaching set up at the World Cup. Can only assume he's had conversations with them and came out of retirement if they're calling him up and he's accepted it.

There's also Joel Matip who also plays for Cameroon and denied any call up and retired himself in 2015 at the age of 24.

Not responsible for either goal, but going back to the overriding reason we brought in Onana — his genius footwork — his impact has been limited at best.

Solid game. Little bit dubious on the positioning for the first one & the second a bit of anticipation and you could potentially Nick a finger on it.

above are hypercritical, was a 6/10 today. Something to build on hopefully

Whilst hes had a dodgy start to his career here, anyone that blames him for those 2 goals is fecking clueless.

Before I start I am 100% not blaming him for the goal, nor do I imagine anyone else is who will go on to criticise him in this thread.

But a better keeper... a top class shot-stopper can save that second shot. It's not low, it's not in the corner and he gets his fingers to it. It's not a howler, but it can be saved.

If it was in isolation it wouldn't be a problem... The problem comes from the fact that he pretty much never makes those kinds of saves. The only one I can think of is the one he made vs. Haaland?

Like most of the goals he concedes, there’s always that nagging doubt of ‘could he have done a bit better there?’

If he never makes saves other keepers would make.

How to explain him having the 2nd highest save % in the league?

Are all the other keepers throwing shots in and only making the saves you see on the highlights?

Fair enough the second goal was a tricky save to pull off. When we signed him, I was willing to sacrifice the elite shot stopping ability if it meant having a drastic improvement in our GKs distribution and commanding of his area. But it's becoming clear that he's not very good at any of those things.

I have such low expectations of him saving anything so it’s pointless to blame him for any goal today. He is just a bang average GK.

Had the same argument in the match thread, silly cnuts just want to blame him for everything.
People are having lingering doubts for a reason. I’d agree that to save those today you’re looking at a save of the month scenario, it seems like he will never pull one of those out of the fire for you.

Solid game overall, fantastic punch in the first half through a lot of bodies. Forest didn’t press him due to his qualities on the ball.

Hopefully onwards and upwards

.... Because he saves all the shots that you would expect the vast majority of keepers to save?

Disagree, we don’t have the CB’s or CM’s to play through the lines. His ability on the ball is very Good, particularly under a press from the opposing #9

He may not always be directly at fault for the goals we concede, but he’s also rarely beyond any reproach.

Today he faced 2 shots on target and they ended up scoring 2 goals.

He has to be doing much much more

So the others arent then if he's second?
I don't really know what other keepers are doing as I only watch all of our games.

What top class saves has he pulled off this season? Saves where you think another keeper would probably not have saved that?

That only makes sense if they're shots he should be saving.
If they're not then you're criticising the wrong person just for the sake of it.

I get that our team is currently a Frankenstein's monster of a collection different types of players, which isn't ideal for Onana. However when Liverpool had injury issues in the 2020-21 season, with Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams as their CB partnership (hardly ball playing CBs), you didn't see Alisson's distribution drop to anywhere near this level.

This stat may have several things behind it, you know...
What if United, by pure chance, concedes the most amount of tame shots in the PL, or the most shots that are struck right at the GK?

Reminds me of the claim from previous years, that United got many more penalties at OT than other teams got in their home grounds...
Now, if 90% of those penalty calls were justified, what good is the stat??

I don't mind you trying to defend Onana to some degree,
but it's not the best metric to do so.

It’s a recurring theme with Onana though.
They scored 2 goals from an xG of 0,8 so clearly there was an issue somewhere.

I don’t blame him for the 2nd goal but it was hardly an unstoppable shot.

And finally, what’s the use of a keeper if 2 shots on target equal 2 goals conceded?

He may not be at fault directly but he’s not helping either

Agree. The value of the yet test has been greatly reduced in the present stat era. When stats and eye test contradict, id always edge on the eye test

A save is a save, you dont get anymore points whether top class or not. Also the sample size is not even a full season. I get it, hes not prime DDG but whilst he was poor in Europe, hes been good in the league.

Yeah, but what else do you use when people who admit to not watching other teams then say other keepers would/could save those shots.

Utd have the 6th most shots against, which isn't surprising but Onana has the 2nd best save % & 3rd best psxg. Yeah he's made mistakes but he's not been as terrible as people like to make out.
