If you wish to have such a precise prediction then I'll go for 6th, because it may well take so many new players a while to gel and in some cases adapt to the Prem.

Corluka has played in the DM position many times.

Where do you predict MUFC will finish? My guess is 3rd behind Chelsea and Liverpool, because:

* Chelsea look strong this season

* Whilst Berbatov is clearly a great new asset, I have a feeling that Ronaldo won't perform to anything like same levels as last season (his mind elsewhere perhaps?)

* Your several ageing players become more and more of an issue and I'm not convinced that the newer replacements will make the step up as much as needed.

this post tastes of bitterness.

yes. He's scored against Arsenal, Chelsea and United. not sure about liverpool
Yes, I remember he did score against the big four, but am baffled by the article.

It was true back in his first season I think. And at Bayer Leverkusen he scored more against the relegation teams in the Bundesliga, or so the Times found out and thought that was an amazing stat a year or so back. They ignored the logic that it might be because the weaker teams have worse defences.
I see. It's funny sometimes you can notice the so-called top strikers fail to score again the lower teams. Hope Berbo can rewrite his stats soon.

Well Ruud never really scored against the top teams as much as he really should have, due to his overall goalscoring record, but that didn't stop him from being a quality player imo.

It seems this thread has a life of its own even though we've signed The Berb.

An unstoppable behemoth!

QUESTION:

How many of you wish it was yesterday all over again?

Just watched an interview with a Bulgarian journalist on SSN. He said there was pandemonium at the airport when Berbatov arrived in Sophia. He said Berbatov was deliriously happy to be playing for the best team in the WORLD and overwhelmed by SAF.

He said he was actually in SAF's car going from M/C airport to Carrington when the bid from City came in. He said that even though they were offering a lot more money he would not even consider a move to City. There was only one team he wanted to go to. He also said that the paperwork was only signed 10 minutes before the deadline. Whew.

Fair enough, and most of them may well do so, although I have to say that Rooney has been 'about to deliver' on his potential for a fair while now without ever really doing so. That's not to say he isn't a very good player, just that I don't think he's quite as good as many of your fans like to believe.

That's not what I've said at all - what is the point in inventing absurd distortions only to knock them down again?

Last season Ronaldo made an incredible contribution to your success: there's not likely to be a repeat performance from him at anything close to the same level for several reasons. Scholes and Giggs are also likely to make less of a contribution and I have doubts that Anderson - and Nani in particular - will be able to step up that much.

One the plus side you now have Berbatov.

To believe that Liverpool have no chance of finishing 2nd is clearly a biased and unreasonable view. They have a stronger squad than last season, have started fairly well in points terms and are in with a shot in my view. Your forthcoming match with them will show us a lot either way.
Are you the one to say? A Spurs fan who's angry about the Berbatov transfer and hates Arsenal reckons that Liverpool will finish above both United and Arsenal. I wonder who's biased and unreasonable. :houllier:

I'm home from work and bloody knackered! Stayed up till past one last night. Just couldn't go to sleep without knowing if he'd join or not.

Didn't post in the Cafe last night as it was unbelievably slow and every time i tried the site crashed!

It was worth only getting 4 hours sleep to know that Berba time was here!

I find it hilarious when people talk about our team like we need another 42 goals from Ronaldo to win anything.

He only scored 23 goals in 2007, yet we still won the league (and more comfortably than last year). Got very close to the CL as well (IMO would have walked it with a close to full strength defence)

Now we have Berbatov, a settled trio of Tevez, Nani and Anderson, a Rooney with a lot of room for improvement.. It's really not that hard to imagine them bridging any gap needed to be bridged in goalscoring if Ronaldo only has a fantastic season, not an unbelievable one.

We're getting through injuries, and we have a very tough first half of the season with all of the top teams away. If we're 2nd or 3rd or even 4th by christmas I'd say we'll be definite favourites to win the 3rd successive league title.

This post tastes of bias: how dare I suggest that the mighty MUFC will finish 3rd this season.
It's not that, but behind Liverpool. Even Liverpool fans aren't as delusional as that.

There's more chance of me having sex with Jessica Alba than that happening.

2 simple questions:

Do Liverpool have as good a team as us?

Do Liverpool have as good a manager as us?

To be fair, there's no fecking hope Liverpool will finish above us this season. They're just not good enough. I think you would've been safer saying Arsenal, although I don't think they'll finish above us either.

I think it's pretty much between us and Chelski, can see them snatching it this season. Either way, it's shaping up to be another exciting season.

Not sure if I've posted in this epic thread yet, but time to get one in! Read nearly the whole thread these past few months - always lurking but rarely posting. Bahama you are an admirable man, a soldier of a poster if ever there was one! :D

I'm not angry about the Berbatov transfer: we got an absolute shitload of money and it's better for wantaway players to be gone and to have replacements who will try 100%.

Nor do I hate Arsenal - I don't hate any club. I merely dislike them.

Am I the one to say? I'm simply saying that Liverpool have a good chance of finishing 2nd behind Chelsea. One most other boards that would not be regarded as an outrageous opinion. But on this board, filled with posters who do seem to hate Liverpool, it's a different story. So I could throw your own question back: I wonder who's biased and unreasonable?

I can only speak for myself, but you're 100% right. I hate Liverpool. They're fans are the most deluded bunch of people you could come across. Feel sorry for them really.

Not being biased, I just don't think Liverpool have a legit chance of finishing ahead of us. You ignored two questions put to you so I'll ask you again:

A) Do Liverpool have a better team or squad than us?

B) Do Liverpool have a better manager than us?

95% of football fans, is there anything wrong with that? Part and parcel of being a football fan.

The difference here is that 90% of the people here are also realistic, which is why plenty have admitted it will be tough to retain the league this season, and nearly impossible to retain the Champions League.

Liverpool finishing ahead of Manchester United is as farfetched a possibility as Spurs finishing in the top 4.

Come on, there is a slight but measurable chance that Liverpool will finish ahead of you there's no chance Spurs will break top 4 - even Glaston doesn't believe that .
He's not ruling out the idea. Plech said Spurs have no chance of finishing in the Champions League places and Glaston replied by saying "it's wildly premature 3 games in" to make that statement. So he still holds some hope.

I really do think the odds of Spurs finishing top four would be very similar to the odds of Liverpool finishing ahead of us in the bookies, don't you think?

There's not the huge gulf you clearly imagine, as much as you may wish to believe otherwise.

But there are others factors. For example:

* Having better players does not always necessarily mean a better team.

* Ronaldo is arguably a better player than any at Liverpool, but how big will his contribution this season be due to injury and Real Madrid frustrations?

* Perhaps Liverpool will want it more and fight harder.

Neither of those questions were answered.

The answer to both questions is no. But if you think that guarantees you a finish above Liverpool then think again.
