It was always an unconditional offer, meaning that the money was to be paid in full.

It would be nice for us to steal some of the limelight from Real and announce a few signings of our own on the same day.

Unconditional doesn't have to mean it's paid in one go.

What did they actually say on SSN?

If it was the full sum up-front and word gets out, it will make any transfer negotiations this summer that bit harder.
I'm not so sure. Selling clubs don't have as much bargaining power as some may think, certainly when it's Man United knocking on the door. The only thing that will change is that they may request more money upfront, rather than in installments.

So what did SSN say exactly?

Did they actually say the words "it will all be paid up front"?

I'm not quite so sure, the selling clubs don't HAVE to sell to United. This isn't sunny Spain, we're not Real or Barca. We need more quality and depth now that Ronaldo is gone. I'd say selling clubs have all the power, especially when it comes to United attempting to bid on quality players.

Any sort of negotiation tactic Gill might attempt would just be rebuffed with "You have 80 million quid, Ronaldo is gone, it's going to be xx million pounds or not at all."

SkySports Northwest correspondent — I can't remember his name — has said that the "unconditional" aspect of the deal means that on July 1st, the full £80m will be paid to United.

If that's true, and I have my doubts, considering the reports to the contrary — although, given that those other reports have not been consistent with each other, you never know — no wonder they accepted the offer, with so little negotiation.

The 1st of July being the first day of the new financial year as well. Hopefully there'll be some developments on possible recruits my then too.

If that's true, and I have my doubts, considering the reports to the contrary — although, given that those other reports have not been consistent with each other, it was clearly speculative — no wonder they accepted the offer, with so little negotiation.

I certainly wouldn't mind if Gill/SAF didn't buy anyone during this transfer period, not give into the madness. Shitty and Real have truly fecked the market for everyone. I would hate to see United forced to buying players at a premium just because we have this massive war chest now...

In mariah careys knicker drawer.
I was listening on the radio about his wages. As it goes up each yearand hes on a 6 year contract, he would be on about £460,000 to £600,000 per week at the end of the contract

All the other reports say four yearly installments - but if we get the full amount in one go that'd be fantastic, although I don't think it will happen like that.

Financial year started on the 6th of April. Or do you mean the European tax year?

Is not paying over the odds, despite having £80 million to spend, more important than winning the league?

I'm sure united knew all season this was going to happen before it went public and have all or most of the signings already in place before it got out that they have 80million to splash.

Regardless of whether it was up front or not, the sheer fact we accepted a bid of 80 million made our negotiations harder.

The only difference now is that clubs might ask for the money up front instead of over a period of time.

at least £80, there's also whatever United already had alotted for this transfer period before Ronaldo, the £ from Tevez, and the £ if any other United players are sold.... that's quite a bit of quid :(

I'm torn, because buying Benzema or Ribery or whomever doesn't necessarily guarantee a championship. Not buying anyone definitely lowers chances by a lot, but at least we won't get skinned on transfer prices...

So how much are Real paying in total over 6 years, including the initial transfer fee?

Because £600,000 a week is over £30m for that one year, added to the previous five years and the £80m transfer fee - that is an obscene amount of money for one player... And if they sign Kaka et al. onto salaries that are even close... They're going to be fecked financially in around 4 or so years

I think its fair to say we wont spend over that £80 million. Its a lot of money and as you say, people will take the piss with prices but thats enough to get in some players who will shortly become what we need. Maybe not the 100% finished articles of a Ribery + David Villa or something. But players we wouldnt be looking to replace in the first team in the next 2 seasons at least.

As you say there are no guarantees but if we buy the right players we can set us up in a fantastic position to challenge for our domestic league title and if we come up short next season, those same players and the youth players coming through should have improved, giving us a brilliant chance the next season.

If we dont spend any money we havent a hope this season. If it goes badly we could have a battle for automatic qualification for the champions league, which is obviously something which would affect our chances the next season too.

So we cant have that. We need to make sure we can come second at the very least and right now, we dont have a squad that suggests thats absolutely assured.
