Manchester United challenge Liverpool with plan to lure Ryan Shawcross back to Old Trafford
By ROB DRAPER

Sir Alex Ferguson could thwart Liverpool's interest in former Manchester United central defender Ryan Shawcross by taking him back to Old Trafford.

The United manager is aware Liverpool have been in contact with Stoke City about the 21-year-old Chester-born six-footer and is keeping a close watch on developments.

But the Merseysiders' hopes of signing Shawcross were dashed when they discovered United had retained first refusal on any possible future deal involving the player, who first joined Stoke on a six-month loan in August 2007.

The deal was made permanent in the following January when Stoke agreed to pay £1million with a further million if they achieved promotion.

Since then Shawcross's value has soared after impressive performances helped them consolidate their Premier League status last season.

Can't see that happening even if Shawcross has dreamt of being United captain

Not going to happen.

He'll never be good enough to be our first choice CB. If it's cover we're after, then we'd be better off signing an experienced CB from a midtable PL club to sit on our bench.

From the comments above you'd think he's rubbish. He's not that bad, I've seen him put in some good performances for Stoke. Obviously he isn't first team material for United but I think he'd do well at a team higher up the table like West Ham or Fulham.

We have Evans as cover for Vidic and Rio and I think Cathcart has the potential to be better than shawcross anyway. Don't like the thought of him signing for the scousers though as he would be decent cover for them.

Where would he come in in this pecking order?

Vidic
Ferdinand
Evans
Brown
O Shea
Cathcart
Neville
As a central defender, he's ahead of Cathcart (young, inexperienced) and Neville (old, short, earthbound, out of position). But probably little chance of ever displacing Evans or a fit Brown. As cover perhaps he could have been a decent squad member, but he needed the last season of getting regular games to reach the level he's at currently, and wouldn't have got it with us. And I doubt we would have let him go if Sir Alex thought he could make a real impact here. This rumor makes some degree of sense since he's done well for his current club and has a past connection to ours. So it is able to fill column inches in a believable manner, but I doubt it's based in truth. Doubt Liverpool are in for him either.

He'll have a decent career as a top flight footballer, but being an impact player for an elite club seems beyond him at the moment. In time, only God knows, as Ronnie would say. Who could have predicted three years ago that anyone would be offering £30m for Joleon Lescott?

I haven't seen him play so I can't really say whether he is good or not. On the other hand he has 2 things in his favor. He is English (which would be a bonus if Blatter's plan becomes real) and a homegrown talent (which satisfy Platini's homegrown criteria). Therefore, if we need a backup defender, which in my opinion we need, and Shawcross is good then why not?

We don't need Shawcross, not with Rio, Vida and Evans. Decent player though.

Probably the best goal-scoring defender in the P.L - who else can match 1 goal in 6 games as a defender without taking penalties.

Players like Shawcross and Turner are underestimated because they play for weaker sides - Shawcross could become a really good player with a bit more experience.

Stoke absolutely love Shawcross, looks a great prospect to be honest. But the fact he was left out of this summers under 21 squad is a bad sign.

we play Burnley wednesday ? :)
Good point, that. ;)

I like Shawcross, but I think we should wait. Eventually Vidic will maybe leave us, and Ferdinand won't play forever, and I don't think we need someone new in until one of them are leaving or not playing good anymore.

And when that situation arises, it's maybe someone else than Shawcross who's the best prospect.

You could say the same about Liverpool with Agger, Skrtel and Carragher. The question is, why are Liverpool interested in him? And why would he want to move anywhere to be fourth choice?

(ok, so that's two questions)

Yeah true, I don't understand that. Unless they are looking to offload one of Agger/Skrtel? Has it been confirmed as genuine interest or is it just paper talk?

They had 4 established centre backs last season with Hyypiä still around. Rafa probably want to replace him with someone proven in England.

Are they?

More defensive injuries today, this rumor will continue to occupy the occasional column inch. One report I read said we insisted ion a buy-back clause when we sold him. If one actually does exist, I wonder how much it's for?

Vermaelen is currently 1:1 ;)

sounds like the kind of player, as many have said, to reassess at around 24 to see if he's going to be of higher quality.

I see your point. That Ayala lad they brought on yesterday didn't look anything special and he seems to be fourth choice for them now.

As has already been said, I can't see Shawcross being happy playing second, third or even fourth fiddle.

If he's got one eye on the England squad and possibly even WC 2010 (you never know!) then a club like Villa or Everton would probably be best for him. I could see him at either of them too, would be a decent acquisition.

while right now it does look like we need strengthening at CB, i don't know that any really good quality CB would be interested in coming here. They'd be behind Rio and Vidic (when either can manage to be fit) for a start, then you would have to put Evans above them too at the start. Then we have Brown who can play CB too. O'Shea as well.

When we have everyone fit, we're well stocked. Our problem is keeping them fit.

If we can get through the next couple of games we should see a proper backline emerge again.

Good shout. Everton could cash in on Lescott, sign Shawcross and use the change to give Moyes a much-needed war-chest.

Villa still haven't replaced Laursen and Shawcross would get games for them.

Exactly. If Moyes knew he could get an apt replacement for Lescott I'm sure he would let him go.

How much would Stoke want for him though do you reckon? £10 million? Surely they couldn't ask for much more than that...

Both (Villa & Everton) would be good destinations for him, settled clubs with good managers where he'll get playing time. Really hope he doesn't go to the Dippers, it'd be an absolute waste of him to end up playing 4th fiddle behind 3 other central defenders. That said, I also have no real desire to see him here - he's good but he's never going to be better than Evans, Rio or Vidic, and Cathcart, O'Shea, Brown and DeLaet should give us enough cover.
