Would be massively surprised if we signed him, even if he became available on a free transfer - everyone said we could of done with Ballack when he was a free transfer and we weren't interested can see the same being true here.

Reckon he'll go to Real Madrid or Barcelona tbh
We were interested in Ballack but he just chose Chelsea over us.

Transfer news: Manchester United line up £12m Bastian Schweinsteiger January bid to steal a march on Chelsea and City - News - MirrorFootball.co.uk

Schweinsteiger fits the bill for Fergie - Exclusive

Manchester United are weighing up a £12million raid for German powerhouse Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The Bayern Munich midfielder is continuing to stall on signing a new contract, with just 18 months left on his current deal, and Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to steal a march on Manchester City and Chelsea by making a move in the New Year.

Bayern are beginning to accept that Schweinsteiger is ready to move on after coming through the ranks at the club.

And although they have already told United that they do not want to lose one of their best players during the season, that will not stop Ferguson from stepping up his interest.

The United boss knows that he will be unable to match either City or Chelsea financially if he waits until the summer.

Ferguson is normally reluctant to do his transfer business in January, but wants to strike first in the race for the 26-year-old.

With Paul Scholes now aged 36, Owen Hargreaves still plagued by fitness problems and Michael Carrick’s long-term future at Old Trafford still undecided, United are desperate for top-class midfield recruits.

Schweinsteiger fits the bill perfectly. He was outstanding when Bayern knocked United out of the Champions League last season and followed that with a sensational World Cup.

Real Madrid, Inter Milan and AC Milan have also been linked with Schweinsteiger.

But sources in Germany say he would prefer a move to the Premier League.

Bayern are in some disarray this season and are struggling to make an impact in the Bundesliga despite topping their Champions League group.

Barcelona don't need him and they are not even linked to him. I don't think he is going to fit in at Madrid where there are Khedira, Ozil, Kaka, Alonso and Diarra.

He says he likes the Premier League, so I reckon its between us and Chelsea. City is becoming like Madrid. They buy all the players but they don't everyone. I don't think they need him there either with Silva, Milner, Toure, Barry and De Jong there.

We'll never get him for £12M unless they want a player thrown in as well.
I don't know about that price for January but if it comes to June or July and he decides not to sign a new contract, then that is the price they will be looking to sell. No team will play 25M for a player who has less than 12 months left on his contract.

It depends if there are two teams bidding for him.

City signed De Jong for 20 m just 6 months before his contract ended.

Well that's just because they are stupid. They have the money to throw it around, so they did. They might have needed a player to cover for someone's injury or something. He is not even worth 20M.

they can have gibson

would be a great signing but I doubt he would join Us
I recall them being interested in Park during the summer.

Why do you say that? we might get priced out but I can't see why he wouldn't want to join United if the deal could be done.

Key word there is City.

On a serious note, all this still seems part of an elaborate contractual hardball to me.

Nah I think different. His does not feel exactly comfortable at Bayern and this is not something new. He has been going at it with the fans for a season or two now. So I think there is a possibility of him moving abroad.

I thought he is overrated but I guess I was wrong. Could be an excellent signing for us.

I'm worried about signing a player from Bayern, they'll probably behead Schweinsteiger and our medical staff will fail to notice the balloon head Bayern replace it with for a laugh.

I've always been a huge fan of Schweinsteiger - I hope he doesn't wind up at City or Chelsea.

If United sign Schweinsteiger for 12m in January I will eat my hat Alaistair style:).

As much as I would like it to happen, realistically it's not going to happen is it?

The one player out there that I will go absolutely muppet for - in terms of possible signings. Being cup tied for half a season doesn't matter when he could be a key player for 5-6 years if not more.

Hope he decides to try something different but, agree in that it seems more of a play to up his next contract.

I don't really see why people give a big deal about him being cup tied. Its only for six months, not like he is going to be for the rest of his career. We are playing in Europe well right now without him.

After all the Premier League is also important and we could rest either Carrick, Fletcher or Scholes for the Premiership and use them for the later stages of the Champions League.

I don't actually think you'll get many arguments here. But Fergie never seems to do that, and is always talking about the narrowness of the market in January because so many players are cup tied.
