2-1 loss or 2-2 draw. Do not think Arsenal have been that impressive this season but I don't think we have either, think this will be close but I think they will have too much pace for us going forward and fancy them more than us. Rooney was woeful again yesterday and Depay is really hit and miss right now so I think there is a lot of pressure on Martial right now after his good start. This is a tough month ahead and I think we will lose at Everton. Actually I'm much more confident we'll get points against City and Palace. Same team as yesterday but Young at LB, Darmian at right.

Anyone else really worried about how tired our team looked by the end? Both Mata and LvG mentioned it also in the interviews after the game. I hope there is a little bit of rotation to help the team

    I would play:

    De Gea

    Darmian
    Smalling
    Blind/Jones
    Young

    Carrick
    Morgan
    Herrera

    Mata
    Memphis
    Martial

Hopefully the way we performed in the big games last season will continue. Got a feeling Memphis and Martial will be key with their pace.

Annoyingly I'll be on a course on Sunday so I'll have to try to sneak a peek at the score line at times if I get chance!

Him or Perreira, Depay has been shite recently.
It's a big game, and Ashley is fantastic defensively. I wouldn't trust Pereira in such a big game just yet.

Absolutely tortured Bellerin last season too. Young is the perfect man for this game. And contrary to popular belief, this won't hinder Memphis' development.

    Arsenal 2-5 United

United to take the lead early, Arsenal to equalise only to gift United the lead with a couple of calamitous own goals, one of which also results in a red card. 10-man Arsenal to get a consolation goal after United score their fifth.

Schnerderlin needs to step it up, hes been a bit meh lately. We should be winning this game, but for some reason I feel a little uneasy about it

Id like to see the back 5 that @Adcuth posted above, now that Jones is back I think he should slot in at CB and Blind should go back to LB where he was very good last season. I would hope they should be able to form a settled back 5 for a bit, though the chances are Jones will get injured again quite quickly.

If Rooney is going to play Id like to see him and Mata swapped around as well. But ideally Id like to see him drop out in place of Herrera.

Schneiderlin should probably play to give us a bit more cover in this game. But yeah, he has been a bit underwhelming.

Darmian has to start at right back for me. Sanchez is by far their best player, so get our best full back on him. Young on the left, with Blind & Smalling continuing their partnership.

I am glad Van Gaal picks the team and not those putting Blind at leftback and Jones at centre back. No thank you. We suck at passing the ball out from the back with Jones in there instead of Blind, not to mention the fact Jones is a walking disaster.

I think we'll see Carrick and Schweinsteiger in front of the back four with Herrera and Schneiderlin coming on in the second half to give us fresh legs.

    What we should go with:

    -------------De Gea------------
    ---------------------------------
    -----Smalling----Rojo----------
    Darmian-------------------Blind
    ----------------------------------
    --------Herrera---Carrick-------
    ----------------------------------
    Valencia-----Mata---------Young
    ----------------------------------
    ------------Martial---------------

What we will go with, because LVG never learns:

    --------------De Gea----------------
    --------------------------------------
    ------Smalling---Blind--------------
    Valencia---------------------Darmian
    ---------------------------------------
    --------Carrick---Morgan-------------
    ----------------------------------------
    Mata---------Rooney---------Memphis
    -----------------------------------------
    --------------Martial-------------------

-LVG needs to admit that the Blind at CB experiment is a failure
-I think Memphis should've been worked into the squad slowly instead of immediately displacing Young, who was great last season. Becoming more and more clear that Memphis is not EPL-ready yet
-Pains me to say it but Rooney is not helping our cause in the 10, Mata is better suited there.
-Going on the last point, we want Mata on the field but not out wide, rather see the much stronger, much faster Valencia get a chance to cause some problems out wide.

So much wrong with this. How has Blind been a failure if we have the best defensive record in the league? And Valencia on the wing?

It is like a parody post. Blind at CB has been a failure, while Mata should not play wide. Instead there should play the much stronger and much faster Valencia who will cause problems out wide.

It is not like Mata has been our best player this season, having far mroe goal/assists than any other player (and having them in important matches) while also having excellent all round display.

Great post @Todd. Valencia on the wing and Basian fecking off is definitely the way forward.

LVG should also drop De Gea and go back to Romero.

I hope Carrick is back. So he can start and then bring on BFS to mop up the rest of the game

It would be nice for our sake if LVG left Rooney out.. Why can't you guys manage United?

I think this will be a tight affair as LvG should play a cautious system.. The result will be decided by whether we can score early doors (~first 35 mins) or not. If not, our usual process of get frustrated, get picked off on the counter will repeat itself and you guys will win 2-0.

Also worth noting that the referee is from Manchester.. which is a strange decision in itself.

Strange selection...Valencia as a winger when Mata has done so well on the right and no Schweinsteiger who is our best midfielder. Don't see the need in breaking up the Smalling-Blind partnership as it has been pretty good so far and I'm sure they can deal with Walcott.

effectively taking away our ability to play out from the back, which is one of our most important perks to be able to hold possession

I thought Young did well at RB last night but with Sanchez as opposition I think we need Darmain at RB and Young will have to play LB. Carrick was just rested so I imagine he will play and hopefully not partnered with Schneiderlin.

Okay, since apparently nobody is capable of thinking outside the box I guess now I have to explain myself.

    1. Anyone who can't see that Blind is not cut out to be a CB is just delusional. He has been at fault for many of the goals we've given up, including the one on Wednesday. Citing our good defensive record as proof that Blind is a good CB is just dumb...has anyone not considered the fact that we haven't given up many goals because most of the teams we've had to play so far have been shit?

    2. Nobody seemed to notice that I still wanted Blind on the field, at LB. Anyone consider why this is? Obviously not. With Alexis probably lining up on the left for Arsenal we want our best wide defender, i.e. Darmian, at RB...so who are you gonna put at LB? Young? He's not a proper defender. Everyone seems to forget that the only reason we're having to even think about things like this is because Shaw got his leg snapped in half. We're just trying to do the best with what we have in the back line, and given that Darmian needs to be on the right for this match (at least I hope LVG can see that), our best bet would be to put Blind at LB, where he did well last season at times, and bring in Rojo or Jones to play alongside Smalling.

    3. Yes, Bastian is our best midfield option, but he played a hard match mid-week, and LVG doesn't seem to want to overplay him. Also consider our EPL record with Carrick in the starting eleven and the fact that most of the Caf has been screaming for Herrera to get a match and he played well against Arsenal last season? If we can grab a lead I'd love to see Schweiny come on at the hour mark and boss the midfield, but recent history and results have shown that Carrick from the start is a recipe for success for us.

    4. Nobody seemed to notice that I still want Mata on the field, where he should've been playing all along for us, in the hole. He has been a creative and dangerous player for us so far, everyone is right about that, but haven't any of you noticed that he seems to do the most damage when he drifts to the middle anyway? I'd like someone to explain to me the benefit of Mata playing out wide rather than playing in a central attacking position? His crosses haven't been all that great from out wide and he certainly can't beat a man down the line...with Darmian (or whichever player is at RB) likely having his hands tied with Alexis I'd like to see a player that can use the touchline going forward to keep the game open.

    5. Bringing Mata into the middle would also solve the uncomfortable problem we have now with Rooney having become rather useless. He's drifting too far back consistently, he hasn't really created any chances for Martial or for himself and with Martial consistently looking dangerous up front I don't think we can drop him and put Rooney in a 9, so I feel that Mata would give us more at the 10 than Rooney is.

Now you can all attack me some more.

Arsenal always have a point in the season where everyone is criticising them heavily and they always bounce back. Hoping this is not their bounce back game. I'm a bit worried personally as we looked knackered yesterday and we have less recovery time than Arsenal do.

I see that LVG has talked about players being tired whilst also saying that, when Fellaini plays, Rooney will play striker ahead of him.

Is he thinking of lining up Fellaini behind Rooney for the extra muscle, with Martial on the bench?

Yeah, this is what I feel. I'm not confident for this one at all, would be happy with a point.

    Hoping for this:

    Martial
    Memphis Herrera Mata
    Schneiderlin Carrick
    Rojo Blind Smalling Darmian
    DDG
    Expecting something like this:

    Martial
    Memphis Rooney Mata
    Schweinsteiger Carrick
    Young Jones Smalling Darmian
    DDG
And the nightmare scenario is that Fellaini comes in for Martial and plays behind Rooney. The horror.

Why would you expect us to play without Blind and hope to play without schweinsteiger? Both are pretty much automatic starters.

Hoping for this, Memphis needs a breather and we need to play defenders in defense rather than mess around with Valencia and Young as full backs.

    Young

    Mata
