Transfer activity over the next week?
“As I’ve said so many times I’m very confident in my players and if and when something happens with ins and outs we’ll update you. In football you can’t predict too much but for me we’re just working on getting better, my focus is solely on the game, can’t be thinking any other way. Then we can talk again.”

Is there a way Van de Beek will play with Pogba and Fernandes?
“I think good players can play well tomorrow but also Scot, Nemanja and Fred are good players, so competition for places, lots of combinations, different systems, so we’ll see them together at some point.”

Got a feeling we'll lose again but hopefully get up to fitness soon.

I understand that people want to drop the likes of Lindelof, Pogba etc but I don't think you do it after one game when the whole team was clearly unfit.

    de Gea
    Wan-Bissaka Lindelof Maguire Shaw
    Pogba Matic
    Greenwood Fernandes Rashford
    Martial

This XI proved to be our best and most consistent, over the longest period of time last season. You don't change it after one game IMO, you give it 3-4. With Henderson, Williams, Bailly, Fred/McTominay, and van de Beek we have players who chomping at the bit to get into the side when someone isn't performing. These guys will probably start against Brighton in the League Cup so will get another chance to prove themselves and gain fitness quickly. If we are still not performing in the Premier League, then players will know about it and get dropped for these guys. We still need someone to challenge the forwards though, so hopefully we sign Sancho.

So, for me, we give the above XI the next three League games and if someone is clearly not up to it then drop them. We need to build some consistency and fitness for the guys who are proven to be our best players at the moment.

Any chance of Smalling getting another chance?
“Different things need to happen, then. So let’s wait and see if there’s that change let’s see what happens if and when the transfer window closes and what happens to Chris.”

Happy with progress against defensive sides?
“I wasn’t happy with the game against Palace, we weren’t ready, not ready to play at intensity we needed. The runs weren’t there.
“After the restart in June and July we took big, big strides. Palace was a very disappointing one, but I am still confident. We need more imagination (than last week) that is for sure.”

Should Premier League clubs help fund lower league sides?
“I think the situation we’re in, the virus is so difficult to predict what’s gonna happen and when the wait is going up and the fans are coming in it’s worse for football and society in general but I am worried for League 1 and League 2 teams and lower teams, of course but Premier League teams are all losing money and hopefully we can get back and football will be normal and we won’t lose too many clubs. How we can do it? We need clubs locally. We’ve seen Bury, Macclesfield, we’ve seen Wigan struggle.”

Solskjaer might have dropped team hint vs Brighton
It sounds like Eric Bailly will keep his play alongside Harry Maguire tomorrow following those complimentary comments from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
“Eric is fit again, a big big plus and looking forward to seeing him develop and play more games.”

To be fair this was more than two years and how you play has shifted significantly since then. Also it looks like Young was out of position and Bailly let himself be pulled out of the centre when March put that cross in, AWB might be a tad better at defending!
You might be right about the shift in playing style but low crosses remain a big issue. On top of my head here are the goals we conceded towards the end of last season and this season already:
    1. 1 Goal against Crystal palace
    2. 1 against Seville (2nd goal also a cross)
    3. 2 goals against Chelsea (FA cup)

No more signings no Top 4. That's a guarantee with how others have improved.

Even if we get Telles I'd still say no chance at top 4.

The club has 3 attackers of any use. If any of Greenwood Martial or Rashford get injured we are screwed. Any games where we need a goal there is no one we can sub on to make it any more likely.

    That isn't acceptable.

Look at Chelsea's attacking options. Werner Havertz Pulisic Ziyech Giroud Abraham Hudson Odoi

Us: Martial Rashford Greenwood Igalho James.

Igalho and James aren't as good or close to a single player in that Chelsea list.

No signings is not an option.

feck no, Baily is absolute tripe and struggled to get a proper handle in clearing balls versus fecking Luton. No chance in hell he should be working out Lamptey deliveries
Oh someone else noticed that as well. 2 balls in the first half alone "booted" straight to the opposite. Yeah he just fell short again.

There was one where he had an easy header, and ended up laying off a Luton winger to go clean on vs AWB. It was shocking.

Someone has already mentioned this, but low crosses into our box are costing us. I wonder how many goals we have conceded due to them, it’s getting ridiculous and nothing is being done.
Oh look at that, I wonder what CB that is getting done at the near post AGAIN

it's a clear weakness of Lindelof, all you have to do is make a run and he doesn't follow.

Effectively a diamond with our strikers pushed wider and Fernandes pushed up? I like it but Ole will also have to think of the effects it will have on Lindelof mentally, I agree he hasn't been good enough but what happens when Bailly is injured and we are forced to use Lindelof but now with less confidence? I don't have that faith that Bailly will stay fit despite him being the better player, it will never happen but I'd like Smalling to get minutes at the end of the game and re-introduce him if he isn't leaving.
When Bailly gets injured, Axel should be match fit. Lindelof needs to be banished to u-23s along with Jones.

Don't care who starts tomorrow as long as Lindelof don't start.

Not sure if an u23 banishment is beneficial but I echo the sentiment, my worry is just whether one of Tuanz/ Bailly will be fit to start. I don't like the idea of ever ruling out a player either, if Lindelof starts absolutely shining in training past a point he has ever showed capable of and Tuanz & Bailly aren't performing in the XI, I'd like him to be rewarded.

I like the idea of rewarding/ punishing form simply, Lindelof has shown with recent form he needs to be dropped.

Good post, thoughtful and measured, which is refreshing. Spot on on all aspects. Strongly agree about the fact the forward positions need challenging - need someone even if it’s not Sancho. In defence we’re looking decent (Bailly/Tuanzebe staying fit and Telles will be important) and midfield is very strong now.

I really dislike how vague and generalised Ole is in interviews. Not talking about giving the game away; more in the sense that he says a lot but really doesn't say anything at all. Sir Alex could be vague but there was candor in the things he said that left clarity to an answered question.

I just noticed the game is way too early. Probably will at least miss the first half, maybe even the entire game. Maybe the team will actually win when I miss the match. :D

I would agree with Paul not playing the next game or two until he fully recovers from Corona but if you are talking about dropping him long term over performances or because you think someone else will do better you are having a laugh.

Most likely he will sit out the next game either way.
Considering he was subbed off after half time (something Ole rarely does) i think its pretty clear he was not happy with his performance. Maybe he has regained some fitness, but if hes going to deliver another stinker like that he should stay out of the matchday squad for now

We're certainly dropping points here. Eerily similar to Jose's second season where we failed to back him in the transfer market - I'd be astounded if we win.

Great point. When you lay it out like that just hits home how understaffed we are in the forward positions

Second game in a row I won't see live. Scheduled work for tomorrow to keep my sanity. I may save myself the grief and check the score before watching it too. Nothing grinds my gears more than watching a recording and not know if we're going to win or lose.

Didn’t Ole say pre game that Pogba and Matic wouldn’t get full games for a few weeks due to being behind the others. He could have taken anyone off due to performance but think Pogba was just showing exhaustion.

Sort of opponent we should be blowing away with ease, as we did last season. Even regardless of any other problems going on.

If McTominay or James start tomorrow I'm going to lose my shit!

Can't believe I'm so nervous about facing Brighton. I know we could lose to teams like this in our pomp but now I'm like we have to be at our best just to have a chance.

We’ll see a well coached, nicely drilled side tomorrow. Utilising the abilities of their players and making themselves difficult to play against, whilst creating chances from quick football.
Ole will be in charge of the other team.
