Can't wait for this defence to channel the spirit of prime John Terry, Carvalho and Ashley Cole against us.

Reminds me of Rooney and Anderson doing the same one year leaving a player totally alone, PIG then fouling the player and getting sent off and Rio Ferdinand ended up going in goal.

Hopefully our game plan has changed since last year from kicking Hazard at every opportunity to actually playing football.
No. It will be the same game plan. Kicking Hazard seems like a great strategy.

And if plan A doesn't work? We will have to sub on Lingard and Mkhitaryan to try and change the game, both of whom are probably not going to have any positive effect on game. Martial or Rashford will definitely be on the bench.
I didn't say to use it in this game, as it should be tried at home v an easier opponent first, but in future if plan A doesn't work we will take on Ibrahimovic and players like Mata/Mkhitaryan are good options to play behind him and unlock defences. Yes they are out of form now, but surely they will step up over the course of the season (I hope).

People keep insisting on Martial and Rashford at the same time, but fail to provide a solution to our thin midfield that option would create. Imagine Herrera and Matić truly all alone against Bakayoko, Kanté and Fàbregas! At least Mkhitaryan or Lingard drop there and provide an extra body.
Exactly. Not impossible, but very unlikely.

Very likely we will see 3-4-1-2 instead of 3-4-2-1 as some have suggested here. Although we are without Pog/Fella/Carrick, Jose will still play a "modified" midfield trio in this kinda game (as evidenced by Matic-Herrera with #10 Mkhi against both Liverpool and Spurs), with both Matic and Herrera sitting deep and with another AM playing half the role of CM. So I don't think we will see Martial-Lukaku-Rashy

I am calling Mkhi to be dropped this time. So it's Lingard/Mata. Also, Rashy slightly edged Martial for me.

The rest of the team is pretty much fixed.

    3-4-1-2

    ---------------Bailly--Smalling--Jones-----------
    Valencia------------------------------------Young
    ----------------Herrera------Matic----------------
    -----------------------Lingard (Mata)-------------
    ---------------Lukaku--------Rash (Martial)------

I beg to differ regarding the playmaker, Lingard seems injured and would be as risky at least as much as Mkhitaryan, able to do a disappearing act like against Benfica (h) in the first half. And Mata's yet to be played in that position, even McTominay is likelier.

We just don't beat these guys.

There is further interesting info on the number of times we've been to Standford Brdige since 2002. They've had 14 managers since 2002. We didn't play them all but feck me, they've had a revolving door over the past 15 years.

They'll be sore from the Roma result so looking to take it out on someone...
Might have been better to see them win there?

It's going to go 1 of 3 ways: home win/draw/away win.

Our record is abysmal, but I really hope Jose gets revenge on the Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man and adds to his misery.

cnut really milked that 4-0 win last season. Needlessly.

I'd be happy with a point. Horrible fixture for us.
Don't worry about it. They're struggling right now. We'll beat them 4-0 as long as Mourinho doesn't irrationally try to keep the game tight, the fool.

Luakaku needs to score this game, andwe win. We aint conceeding unless a deflected shot or a brilliant shot from long range goes in.

GOt a feeling kante will return for this game and chelsea could play 352 so i hope we also have a midfeilder on the bench and if needed we use him unlike liverpool game.

Looks like kante is unsure if he is fit but conte wants him to play and the medical staff thinks he is ready to play. I think this is weird, maybe they think kante's injury is in his head. Will be interesting to see what happens at tomorrow's press conference.

Chelsea will be under more pressure they will want to put things right and they have a real good record against us at the Bridge so I can see Jose will play again so defensively, hope not as they are not as dangerous as last season, hope we play with courage and play for the win.

Mourinho's record in last 9 games away against the top 6 clubs, not very impressive. Only 1 goal scored by Rooney in a loss to Spurs last year.

He has got to change his defensive way in these games. I am still fuming about the Liverpool game as we did not try to attack them enough. I just hope he has a go on Sunday.

If we play a full-fledged 352, playing Mkhi so deep, compounded with the fact Valencia and Young will likely play deep too will completely isolate the front two. Last season, Lingard and Rashford had very good support from Fellaini - who was playing almost in the no.10 role - and Young - who played as a winger when we had the ball. We were at home too, so Mourinho will likely be more negative. Also, I'd rather trust Mctominay alongside Matic than Mkhi. Matic will have to do the job of three men since Mkhi doesn't have the physiques to combat chelsea's three and will surely be poor in that position.
I've been trying to remember what happened last season in that surprisingly brilliant performance. My abiding memory is of Lingard, the unfashionable caf scapegoat, playing an absolute blinder ostensibly up with Rashford but in effect dropping in just behind terrorising Chelsea with his movement. Fellaini's impact I'll have to take you word for, but in any case I feel we won't be replicating that display as we're away from home and personnel changes from both sides make it unlikely that approach will bear fruit again.

I can't escape the feeling we'll have at least one square peg in a round hole in our front five or six players. I'm not relishing Mkhi or Lingard having to drop in to match Bakayoko - Kante - Fabregas. Instead I'd like to see them, particularly Lingard, moving around their centre halves again but I fear they'll be in a thankless role chasing shadows in midfield.

Fellaini didn't have that function in that particular game, it was Pogba and, in part, Young. True about Lingard's speed and movement terrorizing them.

But you want to add an extra man to the attack, leaving Matić and Herrera alone against Bakayoko, Kanté and Fàbregas? How much more disconnected can our attacking play be?

I have absolutely no doubt Mourinho would risk crushing his confidence if that means a great chance of winning at Stanford Bridge. He dropped Ibrahimović at home but would hesitate with Lukaku away?

Do you think the ref would notice if we played with 11 outfield?

Ah right thanks, I should dig out some footage tonight and reacquaint myself with exactly what we did last season as it was great.

What I mean is ideally I'd like to see Lingard fulfilling a similar role to last season, but that realistically we'll have to match them in midfield. I'm not advocating going two in midfield, we'll need three in all likelihood, just that I'd like to be able to!

I like how we're making up things to pretend Mkhi isn't shit.

I'm worried we'll get outnumbered in midfield so I'd go with a 5-3-2, and put Mctominay in alongside Matic and Herrera.

We aren't winning this. We're awful at the Bridge, Chelsea will be keen to prove a point after last night and we all know how we're going to approach the game.

    ------------------DDG--------------------
    ------Bailly------Smalling-----Jones-----
    Valencia-----------------------------Young
    -------------Herrera----Matic-------------
    Mata-------------Mkhitaryan-------Rashford
    ----------------Lukaku---------------------
I have a feeling he might start w Martial, don't know why....
    PREDICTION
Jose parks the bus and we defend excellently for the entire first half, both teams have half chances. Second half, same story until around 65mins or so when they score and, as we have set up to do nothing but defend, we have to break shape and chase an equaliser. They catch us on the break and seal it.
    ALTERNATIVE POST TRUTH PERISCOPE
We attack them fast for the first 15 mins. Smalling scores from a header. They besiege us for the rest of the half and score just before half time. Second half is cagey. They score around 65 mins, we claw on back in the 95th minute.
    Chelsea 2 - 0 Man United
    Morata, Hazard
    Chelsea 2 - 2 Man United
Bad vibes over at the Shed, hopefully Conte still out. Last night will have taken a bit out of them for sure, and possibly affected confidence and managerial chutzpah. If we score first there is a real chance here. In a way the CL games this week showed the limitations of great movement, possession, etc.... would be amazing to win this one, ugly or otherwise. When is Felli back?

EDIT: Fixed. Made a poodles arse of the coding there.

It's true he's been shit lately, but still… the kind of shit that has the most assists in our team. And I do wonder, using your term, what other shit are we going to put in midfield.

Almost certain this is the starting line-up:

    de Gea
    Bailly Smalling Jones
    Valencia Herrera Matic Young
    Mkhitaryan
    Lukaku Rashford
    ---
Romero; Lindelof, Blind, Darmian; McTominay, Mata; Martial

Lingard will replace someone if fit. Fellaini was always estimated to return by this game, but if he hasn't been spotted training this week already then I doubt he'd be thrown on the bench here (then have to go on international duty as well). I think the safest thing to do now is try and get through this game with the current set of players and bring the likes of Fellaini, Pogba, Carrick, maybe Rojo and Ibrahimovic back in after the internationals, when we have the likes of Brighton and Newcastle (to a lesser extent) both at Old Trafford.

Hoping we can do them at the Bridge for what would seem like the first time in forever. I know we beat them in 2012 but they did have a couple of players sent off. It's obviously too early to write off anything happening, but if City were to beat Arsenal and we lose here, I'd find it hard to pick us to pull this one back over the course of the season - even if City have a less than spectacular winter period again. However, I do think Arsenal have been going about things more quietly and doing OK recently, so if they can escape this game with a draw they'd still fancy their chances of nicking fourth. Lose convincingly and I think they'll be ruined mentally again.

    Big weekend for sure.

Shit just always seems to happen when we go to Stamford Bridge

16/17 FA Cup - man sent off
    16/17 PL - 1-0 down after 1 minute
15/16 PL - 0-1 up till the 90th minute end up drawing 1-1
14/15 PL - Cant really complain about this game, just beaten by the would be champions
    13/14 PL - Moyes
12/13 PL - Our last win, 2-0 up only to go 2-2, they go down to 9 men and we score a clear as day offside winner - I guess we used all our luck up for the forseeable here? Bearing in mind though this was our first win there (in the league) since 2002 though
