We need to find a different way to play without Martial and Lingard, and this team doesn't include Mata, who is good at providing some control but slow, or Sanchez, who is, well, crap quite frankly. The full-backs can bomb on with defensive cover provided by Matic and Herrera. Pogba and Fred can push forward and create chances for the forwards, hopefully.

I'd love to see Chong, Gomes and Greenwood on the bench too.
The more in midfield the better against Chelsea. We need to try and dictate play ad at the moment this is the only way to do it. Maybe Herrera can man-mark Hazard again

Bet Hazard has been saving up a good performance for this game and I bet Jones plays and assists him with that.
Please keep Jones away from Hazard.

I think we should let them have most of the ball. They basically pass sideways the whole game, and the have an average defence which we can exploit.
We should also shoot more against their unconvincing Kepa.

    Here, there, everywhere...
Great opportunity for Lukakau and Sanchez to earn their massive wages.

The XI pretty much picks itself:

    De Gea
    Young Lindelof Jones Shaw
    Matic
    Herrera Pogba
    Lukaku Sanchez Rashford

The formation I would go with is the diamond with Lukaku on the right, Rashford on the left & Sanchez through the middle. Also, Lindelof was doing so well playing on the right side of the central defense. We shouldn't move him to the left to accommodate another player. Whoever comes in should be asked to play on the left.

Without Martial and Lingard, Ole has to change his formation to get the best out of Lukaku and Mata. This is where we will see his real attribute as a coach of Manchester United. If he can't deviate from the 4-3-3 that rely on pace, we won't beat Chelsea and we will suffer a lot under him as our permanent manager.

Don't particularly care about the outcome of this game tbh. Given our injuries and tough games coming up, it's most important to finish fourth .

Having said that, really hoping from a half decent performance from lukaku. He's one who really needs to prove his worth again and unlike Sanchez and Mata could still have a future here.

Rashford will be cursing the 2 wide lads being out, as he knows he'll do well to be in the centre now!

Exactly why this game is so interesting. We know what Sarri is going to do, but Ole has to change almost everything to his offensive approach for this game, and Chelsea are very vulnerable morale-wise at the moment. I didn't put any stock on Ole's tenure in the game against PSG, but this one will have some bearing on whether he is a coach that can steer this club in the right direction long-term, even considering the injuries to Martial and Lingard. Sanchez really needs to step up but I'm not holding my breath.

When did we last win down there?
I could be wrong but it could have been in 2012/13- Fergie's last season.

Still feeling a tad negative about this one, not because we lost to PSG but because I don't see where the energy/pressing and the counter attack is going to come from. Beat them here though and there's only City left to worry about in the Cup.

They’re about 2 levels ahead of us right now. It’ll be like us beating Liverpool in 77

Avoid City and either of these teams should have a reasonable route to the final and who knows, maybe City might get complacent and get knocked out by one of the smaller teams.:D

He could if we push Sanchez in the middle to play a more holding / link up play without relying on his pace. And then maybe Rashford on one side, Pogba on the other, and we try to work it out with Fred? He can push the ball forward quickly normally. I say that but it's not ideal, of course.

Looking at how stubborn Sarri is, we could go with the same tactic that worked when we played them earlier this season: put someone on Jorginho and Herrera on Hazard, and that should nullify their chance creation.

Mata surprisingly played #10 at the Bridge earlier this season and he did a good job on Jorginho, however I don't think Ole would trust him to do that. I'd still go with the same tactic: 4-3-1-2 with Mata playing behind Rashford and Lukaku.

This would have been the perfect game to play Lingard as the false 9 who drops deep to press Jorginho..

Can't believe you lot are so negative. We've been dreadful recently. 50/50 game at best for us. Even Mourinho Utd gave us a good game.

Utd are very good on the counter and if we play normal Sarri way going to be lots of danger.

Lot of question marks over Chelsea team and tactics for this game.

But two of our masters on the counter attack are unavailable. Lukaku is decent, but Mata and Sanchez are just meh.

I think we have a good chance, but our record at Stamford Bridge has been awful for a long time. Additionally, the loss of Martial and Lingard takes a lot of pace from the side. Should be a close game.

I don't think we have enough in attack to win, unless Luiz and co have a shocker.
We have three players earning close to £700,000 a week between them, who severely weaken the team when they play.
Sanchez, Lukaku and Mata should not be at this club next season.
Wish we had three young, dynamic and explosive attackers to take their place.

    Go for it.

    De Gea

    Dalot - Lindelof - Jones - Shaw

    Fred - Matic - Pogba

    Lukaku - Rashford - Sanchez
Or just feck Lukaku or Sanchez off for Chong and Gomez

I can't see Mata starting. No way, what's the point...

Lukaku , with Sanchez and Rashford either side of him. On paper, a v good front three, but form is not so good in Lukaku and Sanchez. But it's a great game to come good and I am sure Ole will tell them this.

Just think, if (if...) those three were to hit it off, and we win the game impressively.. could he then drop them?

I do hope to see some youngsters because we have to freshen things up.

Tough game though... I want to be hopeful but.. it's going to be tough.

It's insane when you think about it. No other organisation would spend such a high percentage of wages on three players/staff who are utterly useless and tend to lead us to a loss.

Unfortunately, because it would cost so much money in transfer fees to replace the deadwood, we keep extending their contracts and hang on to them, while the manager tries to keep us in the top 4. (And yes...we are a top 4 club - why finish in 1st place, when we can earn almost as much by finishing in 4th place).
In the last 3 transfer windows, I have been told that we have a net spend of about £60M, which is equally as damning. The crazy thing is that fans buy the excuses peddled by Woodward, for not buying players, while ignoring the simple fact that Woodward wants to save money, to increase profits (which is what most CEOs do, to pick up their big bonus payments).
It'll be interesting to see what excuse Woodward uses this Summer, for not opening up the purse strings.

One positive is that since the injuries to Martial and Lingard, Ole has had the best part of a week to figure out how we should approach this game. Assuming he starts with Rashford, Sanchez and Lukaku, he has had a chance to look at various options as to where to play which.

I really hope he does not play Lukaku through the middle as he is so immobile. At least when he is on the right, he realises his job is to move about at least a little.

On paper, that front three looks great. Form is a funny thing.

Keep having nightmares that OGS is going to start Lukaku as the lone striker and Mata on the right, before waiting until the 81st min to change it

Utd would have prepared for the game 2 weeks prior. The blow is that we don't have quite the same options coming off the bench.
I'm pretty sure the plan was to start with Lukaku/Sanchez/Lingard initially. Now it'll be Chong and Gomes on the bench

    I hope for this team

    Starting XI
Romero - Dalot, Lindelöf, Bailly, Shaw - Herrera, Matic, Pogba - Rashford, Lukaku, Sanchez

    Bench
De Gea, Young, Smalling, Pereira, Fred, Chong & Mata
Smalling has to start. When Chelsea loses they will start pumping balls into the box and we need his aerial superiority .

With the amount of positions we need to replace. We should be trying players from the youth. Big teams had done it.

Bring Fred in, with Sanchez and Rashford up front. and Pogba just behind them. We have a stronger midfield and this is where the game will be won or lost.

keep reading in the press , that this is the game to give some of the kids a run out, I dont agree .
This is a must win game , the only chance we have of winning this season is the FA Cup , strongest possible team needs to be put out, and I include DDG in that.
Chong and Gomez on the bench would be the best idea , but only use them if we are winning.

What if we go with the wide forward thing we've done at Spurs and Arsenal, but use Pogba in the Lingard role and shove Mata on Jorginho like last time?

Nah, Romero is our cup keeper. He doesn't get many games and he almost always does well so he deserves to be on the pitch against Chelsea. Only using someone like Chong when we're winning is strange too. What if we're 1-0 down after an hour and our attackers aren't offering much?

Not trying to mug off the cup here....

But I'm glad the loss came in the Champs League. I wouldn't be too upset if we lost to Chelsea either. I want to see how Ole reacts to a game where he was outclassed tactically.

This season's all about where we finish in the League and the Liverpool game is the one we have to go into with the strongest players fresh.

I'd like to see Fred, Dalot, Smalling, Mata, Lukaku and Sanchez all starting tomorrow. With them all having a chance to play well and play their way into the lineup against Liverpool. If they don't get us through in the cup then they don't deserve to start the Liverpool game either.

What’s this Fred doing mentioned in the line up?

Not in an important game like this. No, please no.
I love The Cup and want a strong team put out. I’m expecting a bit of a backlash from Chelsea after their poor attitude and performance against City so we really need our best available team for this game, and even with injuries I’m sure we can put a stronger team out with Fred not in it than in it.

The closest we've come to beating Chelsea away in some time was back in October...

The only change for us tomorrow, unfortunately, is the scorer of the double from that day, Martial. So in terms of personnel, it's a similar task but not impossible.

Shame Greenwood is also out, but I'd still have expected Sanchez to start. He has to take this game and turn his United career around.

The most interesting thing about the line-up tomorrow will be the forwards, Will Ole rest Rashford to make sure all of our front 3 aren't missing for Liverpool and just stick in Sanchez, Lukaku and Mata? Or will he go for it and play Rashford, and is their a chance he'll go really bold and start one of Chong or Gomes over Sanchez?

The rest of the team pretty much picks itself I think, I don't see Ole altering his mnidfield.
