Our toughest away game of the season. I doubt we will get a confortable win, if a win at all. I think Jose will play a total parked bus and hope to snatch a goal on the counter. He will be happy with a draw but I feel we need to score.

I just hope that if we lose, we don't use the "We mustn't forget, the pitch was very bad" apology.

 Everything's set up for an absolutely horrendous night on Thursday, all that's missing is for Rostov to be situated a little more to the east so that we can get Siberian temperatures.

Just look at the state of that, fecking hell.

A trip to Galatasaray sounds like paradise right about now.

Know nothing about them but though this team was a decent draw for United? At least that was the mood when the draw was made. What's changed?

What's so bad about the pitch that it's more likely to cause an injury? Other than the the weird line/indentation on the bottom right of that photo, just looks like there's patches of non-grassy areas. Poor pitch conditions might not be ideal for seeing pristine football and no doubt will affect our performance more than Rostov's, but nothing leads you to believe that it's unsafe.

the last couple of games have shown how much we rely on Mhikitaryan so hoping he makes it for this

Zlatan will obviously start so I'd line up with

    -------------------------------------De Gea--------------------------------------------
    Valencia------------Jones-------------------------Rojo-------------------------Shaw
    ------------------------------Herrera-----Carrick---------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------Pogba-----------------------------------------------
    Mhiki-----------------------------Zlatan----------------------------------------Martial

watched the highlights vrs Bayern and they looked like a quick team who capitalised on some mistakes by Boateng

despite his brainfart at the weekend I think Jones/Rojo is our best partnership when Bailly isn't around - Didn't see the second half at the weekend but Shaw looked good in the first and I'd like to see him play more - with that midfield we can control the game and hopefully nick a goal or two

I believe the Bournemouth result has dampened spirits and brought out the pessimists.

Though I think it was always going to a be tough game. You can never underestimate a team that's made it this far into the competition.

To me that looks pretty dry and hard, which results in more hamstring (for example) injuries, in general.

Sure, and I expect them to be a good team. It's a little uncomfortable though when United play teams you have know idea about.

Rostov defeated Ajax and Anderlecht, two of the remaining teams in the Europa League, to qualify for Champions League. They won against Bayern at home and were only narrowly defeated twice vs Atletico. My optimism level regarding winning the Europa League is going to increase significantly if we end up winning the tie comfortably.

We'll have to get a good result here if we're going to go hard for the cup against Chelsea as well.

GET TO KNOW UNITED'S OPPONENTS FC ROSTOV

Manchester United visit FC Rostov in the Europa League Round of 16 on Thursday, but exactly who are the little-known Russian side and what can the Reds expect from this first-leg tie?

Who are they? Founded in 1930, FC Rostov play their football at the Olimp-2 Stadium in Rostov-on-Don, some 1,872 miles from Old Trafford. Only Krasnodar, the other remaining Russian side in the competition, would have offered a longer journey for Jose Mourinho's side and our 238 travelling supporters. They are unbeaten at home in the Russian Premier League in nine games this season; their stadium, with a capacity of 15,840, has proven a tough place to visit with only Atletico Madrid recording a win there this term – 1-0 in October. "It's far and it's difficult," admitted Mourinho after the draw was made.

How did they get here? The Selmashi ('Harvesters') were initially in the Champions League after beating Anderlecht and Ajax 4-2 and 5-2 on aggregate in the qualifiers. They faced a tough ask to progress from a group containing Bayern Munich, Atletico and PSV Eindhoven, but held their own and finished third – above PSV – to qualify for the Europa League, securing an impressive 3-2 victory over German champions Bayern in Russia along the way. Most recently, they defeated Sparta Prague 5-1 over two legs in the Round of 32, after comfortably winning 4-0 in the first leg at home, to set up a clash with the Reds.

What's their current form like? Rostov returned from a three-month winter break in Russian football to hammer bottom side Tom Tomsk 6-0 away from home at the weekend. Having finished second in the Russian League last season to seal Champions League football, they are currently fifth in the table despite their impressive home form.

Who's their boss? Rostov’s manager is Ivan Daniliants, who was previously the assistant coach to Kurben Bendyev before his departure last September. Daniliants has also managed Rubin Kazan, plus the Moldova national team, and is a familiar name to Mourinho, who faced him in 2009. "I know the manager well," Mourinho said. "I played against him when he was at Rubin and I was in Italy at Inter. The team is really difficult, very defensive and physical, so it's a bad draw but we'll focus on it and go for it."

Who is their star player? Forward Sardar Azmoun (pictured above) hit a brace at the weekend and also scored against Bayern and Atletico in the Champions League group stages, as well as contributing to his side's 4-0 home win over Sparta in the last round. Dubbed the 'Iranian Messi' by fans after moving to Rostov on an initial loan from Rubin in 2015, he was linked with a move to Premier League rivals Liverpool in January after helping himself to nine league goals last campaign.

Anything else to note? Two United players are familiar with members of their squad: Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marko Devic were team-mates at Shakhtar Donetsk in 2012/13, while Antonio Valencia plays with Christian Noboa for Ecuador. Meanwhile, former Blackburn Rovers winger David Bentley made seven appearances for Rostov in 2012/13, becoming the first Englishman to play in the Russian Premier League.

I think this is going to be a tough one but over the two games I believe we will have enough about us to win.

We need to go strong and I would love to see Mkhi start but doubt he will. I think he will be on the bench in case we are chasing the away goal. The away goal/s will be important so we need to try to get at least one – I think we will score in this game, unfortunately I see Rostov to score as well.

I also see this being a Fellaini game as opposed to Carrick – who I can see starting the Chelsea game.

The defense really needs to be on top of their game against what looks like a decent looking Rostov. Despite Romero starting both games against St Etienne I can see De Gea in goal such is the importance of this game.

Looking at the travelling squad I think the starting 11 will be something like

    De Gea

    Valencia Smalling Rojo Blind

    Herrera Fellaini

    Pogba

    Rashford Ibrahimovic Martial

Unpredictable away European match, we have come unstuck before.
They are unbeaten at home and after Saturday there was no confidence in the team.
I think if we can come away with a scoring draw we will be OK , come away with a win even better.
Ibra needs to have better game than Saturday and Rashford and Martial if they start need to step up their game.

The top4 is over now. Focus on this cup now.
I'd agree with a few of the others above - Top 4 is remote, especially considering we have to go away to everyone above us, Liverpool aside.
We can win the Europa league with 3-4 wins and some draws. The league will require a much better set of results as well as going away to Arsenal/Spurs/City and getting something. This has to be the priority now.
The margin for error is much lower in the Europa because it all depends on one single game, and that's assuming we reach the final in the first place. Meanwhile we have more than 10 games left to play in the league and are 3 points off 4th with a game in hand. Which means there's still some room for error in the league compared to the Europa. We could lose one or two games and it won't be the end of the world as long as Liverpool or Arsenal drop points too, and it's not like either one of them are flying. If anything I'd give the league higher priority for that fact alone.

All it took was to drop two points at home for people to go from "we can finish fourth" to "fourth is out of the window" despite our situation not changing much at all.

I think the fear is even if we get into Top 4, can we keep it? We are drawing too many games.

    Iranian Messi

He plays nothing like Messi, closer to Zlatan in terms of play - at least a younger version

Yeah, we Iranians hate that nickname as well. It's pretty funny how it came to life though. For some reason Azmoun's first highlight reel on youtube - when he was about 18 - was dubbed "Iranian Messi". All the media then thought that that was really what he was called in Iran. And they still do to this day.
